Kendall Gill: The media dubbed him "The next Michael Jordan" | Forgotten Player Profiles

Спорт

Kendall Gill entered the NBA with the upstart Charlotte Hornets after exceeding expectations in his 4 years spent on the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. He was hoped to once again exceed expectations, but his career just wouldn't pan out the way most thought it would. He showed his ability on both sides of the ball during his career, averaging over 20 points per game twice and leading the league in steals once. However, his time spent with the Charlotte Hornets and Seattle Supersonics were littered with controversy and drama, and it seemed throughout his career, no one wanted to commit to him as their franchise player. Which is understandable as he lacked a 3 point shot in a league that was evolving and his character was in question for the first half of his career. Nonetheless, Gill had a more than respectable 15 years in the league where he could have arguably been deserving of an all star game or two, but his contributions are lost in a period that saw some of the best shooting guards of all time lace em up.

I was a sophomore at Richard T. Crane High School on Chicago's west side. Just 5 minutes away driving or bus from the old Chicago Stadium where the Bulls and Blackhawks played. That 1988/1989 'Flying Illini' team was just as popular as the Bulls and Michael Jordan who were steadily on the rise. I can recall a couple of female classmates who would swoon and rave about how cute Kendall Gill was. Even though I was happy with Jordan, Pippen, Grant, Paxson, Cartwright and a host of other key guys, I always wished that Kendall Gill was with the Bulls in his prime. Thanks for the post and memories.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. When I was 19 in 1992, I also read that Kendall Gill was a "budding Michae Jordan." I was SO pumped when the Sonics traded for him in 1993! When things got bad for him in Seattle in 1995, I SO wanted that Kendall Gill for Clyde Drexler (and pure shooting potential superstar Tracy Murray) was a rumored trade! Kendall Gill didn't succeed in Seattle, because that creep George Karl's ego.

@Mongo Slade man you are conjuring up some very unpleasant feelings right now! LOL man we followed that team that year no other. Every game was a party , remember Indiana ? The house exploded that Sunday afternoon after Nick dropped that 4o+ft buzzer beater.hell I remember what really started the whole craze of all of my friends getting together for every game that year. It was the Georgia Tech game when the Illini stormed back from a big deficit and won in OT that was the birth of Flying Illini from Dick Vitale that day as Battle Gill An derson were throwing em down . The Elite 8 against Syracuse on Easter Sunday . I had to work that day in an upscale restaurant as we did high class brunch buffets and every guy that was supposed to be seated and eating with their families was jam packed in our bar and it was loud and it was awesome. Some had watery eyes we had been waiting a long time for that one. And then came that Saturday night. Well....after the heartbreaking loss and many broken things we made the mistake of actually going out to a bar in which none of us had any self-control as far as pacing ourselves and it only took one moron to say yeah go Michigan and fisticuffs commenced!lol anyway there is one other just as heart breaking year and in some ways even a little more painful, because with the game tied counting into the last minute the illini have the ball and Luther Head (one of my fa es also) throws up air ball. He hits that shot I think we win the title. Oh and that Arizona game....that right there was the greatest Illinois win of all time . That mad scramble to some how get that game to OT I still have to watch that every once in a while to believe it happened. And that was the last great year of Illini basketball

For salary balancing reasons, the rumored trade would have included Tracy Murray (the next Reggie Miller) along with Clyde Drexler, for Kendall Gill. To this day, I am STEAMED that Seattle refused this trade! It would have helped BOTH steams! Portland needed a young, high scoring prime time shooting guard. Seattle needed that extra superstar to pull us over the top. Portland REALLY undersold what they could have gotten for Clyde Drexler.

Gill needed a consistent outside shot. Other than that, he was a very good all-around 2 guard. I wouldn't say he was "The next Michael Jordan" but could have been the era's Jimmy Buckets as a fair comparison.

As an Celtics fan from the 80's nobody ever talks about Scott Wedman !! He was hurt Alot during his time with Boston but he played in the finals in 84 85 and 86. Missing most of those finals games due to injuries. But he was a real important part of that teams regular season success. Especially if Bird Parish or McHale were hurt. Everyone remembers his performance in the Memorial Day Massacre vs the Lakers in 85. But go back and watch game 2 of the 84 finals. Wedman hits a huge 18 foot baseline jumper in overtime that is the game winner. He was a real good player nobody remembers

Gill was one of my favorite shooting guards of the 90s. I also thought he never got a fair chance to be the alpha dog on a team, despite putting up stellar stats. This dude was always looking ripped! Had a legit NBA body. I didn't realize he bounced around so much in the twilight of his career.

I remember seeing 👀 him doing some damage on my team Heat. I was wondering why he left the game after doing damage. Yeah, we had Zo and Eddie Jones but it wasn't enough to stop Bonzi Wells from making a comeback with the Blazers why Rasheed Wallace was the player. When I saw him on NBA2k2 lineup being rated like 74, I was wondering if I was crazy when I told an acquaintance that they lost because he was off while he argued Eddie Jones was the important player. This video just made me realize I'm not crazy.

There were many compared to Jordan, and many were labeled as the next Jordan, but only one came close, KOBE. That said, when rookies and draft picks for several generations are compared to Jordan long after he's retired, that speaks volumes to MJ's "greatness" and his impact on the league. Eventually, NBA pundits will stop looking for the next Jordan because there will not be another. Someday, someday, one will come in and may be better than Jordan. He would have to be acrobatic and astonishing. A guy that has jaw-dropping moves, leaping ability, and great hang time. He will be better than what anyone has seen before simply because those of us who have seen Jordan won't be alive. It'll all be new to the new generations. Just like generations born in and after the 80s don't know much about Cousy, Maravich, West, Havlicek, Russell, Chamberlain, Jabbar, Hayes, Monroe, Reed, Unseld, Gilmore, Walton, Mikan, Thurmond, Elmore, Barry, and many more.
