Thankyou so much for sharing about Nanette - I had my 30yr old PTS after colicking 18 months ago and it was absolutely the right thing - we were heading into Winter, he had Cushings and no teeth and he’d had a lovely lazy summer putting my youngster in his place! He was very loved and I was with him till the end. We owe this to them after all they do for us. Hope Kenco has a wonderful time with her new ponies x

So sorry for your loss of Nannet hope that is how you spell her name she will be missed and glad Kenco now has a new job even though it is not what some people would call a job but she looked really happy

So sorry about Nanette. Much as its hugely sad and you miss her you did right by her. I love that you stayed with her and had the best day and knowing it was her time. Kenco will really enjoy her new job I'm sure and again another good decision made by you for Yr gorgeous girl. So many people do things for the wrong reasons but it's lovely that you put the horse first. Xx

My mantra is; ,,Letting go is the highest form of Love." You did that for her and that is incredible. Didi will search for her, yelling and sqeeling for her they were close bonded because Kenco was her mom. I hope Didi accepted it, I do not know when this was recorded. I feel for Didi and hope she is calmer now. Yes please update us about Blondy. 🤗❤️🇳🇱

Kenco has gained some weight. However, she looks healthy so I hope she enjoys her time with her new pasture mates.

Weird I thought the other option was them going naturally. I'll stand behind a bullet having its place when your vet is at least an hour away and there is a massive injury that they are dying of.

OMG I am so pleased you mentioned regarding horse Euthanasia ,There is no need for the torture and distress of such a giving noble animal to be shot? That give's so much and trust, Tries so hard in it's life to make us humans happy! The thought of it ending its life in fear really is upsetting!!! I have also seen footage of a fox hunt where a horse had a heart attack and died and all the riders laughing stating "What a way to go"??????? Really????? Utterly disgusting how humans treat such a noble animal! It's probably heavy mount did not have any respect or welfare for the poor thing! Plus let's not go there what happens to the poor fox??? It stills goes on in England!!! The fact is us humans are animals also! My 15yr old dog was put to sleep in November, Pinball was going to die no where other than in his bed, Too be put to sleep There was never going to be a visit in a cold clinical vets!!!! He had steak with a mild sedative for his breakfast as never lost his appetite! but was on steroids! for many years with health problerms! Pinball was a French Bulldog of 15 yrs! Everyone surrounded him and gave him all the thanks and love! He was sedated again and started snoring, Then put down! He was taken away by a exceptional animal funeral directors for cremation and brought back home to me!! That's how you show respect and thats what they deserve in my eyes!!! Every pet deserves the utmost respect and you Miriam are the Queen!!!

I don't normally comment on this sort of stuff but on this I feel I must. How people choose to end their horse's lives is a very personal thing and often based on their own experiences. Please don't assume that shooting a horse gives it an end that is 'torture and distress' because that is so, so untrue, how their lives come to an end is everything to do with the type of person in control of that situation. I adore my horses, they mean the world to me and like Miri I am there at the end with them and I will always make respectful and kind decisions with their welfare at the forefront. We opt for them to be shot with a boltgun, for many reasons, but for example, a very needle shy horse, or one a bit funny with vets, will have a more difficult time with euthanasia (there are also many horror stories with it going wrong with euthanasia and them taking a long time to pass, but that is a case by case thing). The last mare I let go of, I led her to the side of the field, stress free, out with her friends, to a big bowl of food. We were/are blessed to have a superb person to come and shoot them, with a bolt gun (there is no blood really and no chance of missing/failure in any way). My darling mare had her head in a big bucket of mix and I thanked her and kissed her goodbye. She knew nothing of what was coming and will have been dead before she heard the gunshot and hit the ground. I know I did right by her and I did it from a place of love. Miri is not wrong in her approach and I understand and respect it, but please, don't lump those of us who end our horses in a different way in with those you feel are abusive. Trust me, we are coming from a place of love too and it is important to respect that.

@@itsels Well said. I have seen a horse die after a heart attack and while it wasn't an ideal situation by any stretch of the imagination, it was a "good" way for her to go. She was cantering peacefully around and then just dropped. She was 33 years old and it was a quick and relatively painless way for her to go. When a horse dies from heart failure, they literally just drop dead. She wouldn't have even known what happened. We should all be so lucky.

@@joeypotter6051 Quite agree. I feel the initial commenter is more relating it to their opinions on Fox Hunting, which is an entirely separate debate and not one I shall get in to. That topic aside, an instant death from a heart attack is a definite case of, as you say, 'we should all be so lucky'.

I've been involved in 5 horses being PTS, 4 with the gun and 1 with the vet - having seen that, I will never use the vet. It took almost an hour for the horse to pass, and with the gun they were all gone before they hit the floor. Of course there are instances of it going wrong with both methods, but having experienced both I know which method I would personally choose for my boy. I honestly think it's one of those things that doesn't have a right answer and neither option is wrong.

I totally agree and we choose to end their lives with a gun too. There are a lot of misonceptions around this. People must do what they feel is right by their horse.

I've experienced both, done properly the bullet is quick and they have no idea what happened. When my pony was PTS with a broken leg, she really panicked when she started to go down after the injection, it was really hard to watch. I also knew a horse that was PTS and the vet pronounced him dead, then he got up and ran off and collapsed again. Obviously done properly that shouldn't happen and a bullet gone wrong can be horrific as well. It's never easy whatever method you use but glad that it sounds like Nanette's passing was peaceful.
