Ken Stabler and the Luv Ya Blue Houston Oilers: A Tribute

Спорт

NFL quarterback Ken "The Snake" Stabler will be remembered first and foremost for his career with the Oakland Raiders. Nevertheless, he also left a legacy in Houston when he was traded to the Oilers in 1980, at the height of the team's historic "Luv Ya Blue" years, a term describing the love affair between a city and its professional football team. Though he only stayed in Houston for two seasons, the reputation he earned in Oakland for his outsized personality, country-boy charm and penchant for 4th quarter comebacks only grew in Houston. A look back at his colorful tenure as the Oilers' quarterback.

Nice tribute to *The Snake*. One thing about that 1980 game at the Jets... when *Kenny* threw FOUR 4th quarter touchdown passes, he became the FIRST to ever do so. How hard is that to do? It's only been tied - never broken - two times. By *Joe Montana* in 1989, and Vinnie Testaverde in 2000. *The Snake* was the best!!!

Unfortunately for him and the Oilers on that day the first half counts. The comeback ended up 3 points short and the Jets won 31 to 28. Had they won that game they would have won the Central Division and had home field advantage. Instead they lost all the tie breakers first to the Browns for the Division and to the Raiders for the Wild Card game.

Unlike a lot of fans, I couldn't just flip a switch and become a Texan fan just because they were in Houston. I never understood how someone could do that. Next week they could love the Lions if they wanted to. I don't get it. But if you wanna see the old Oilers back out on the gridiron, you're welcome to stop by and watch them. Of course they'll be wearing the Titans uniform the following week. Go Oilers!

The Oilers were floundering and 3-3 after six games in 1980. The acquired all-pro tight end Dave Casper and proceeded to go on an 8-2 tear with Campbell having several 200 plus yard performances. The two games they lost they very well could have won. A 17-14 home loss to Cleveland in the Dome. Toni Fritsch missed a makeable field goal which would have tied the game. Casper had a breakout game: 7 catches for 150 yards and a TD. Although he did have costly fumble after being hit by defense back Justin Flint. He caught an amazing over the shoulder bomb from Stabler deep in the 4th quarter ala: Ghost to the Post. But Toni missed the kick. The Jet game saw an incredible comeback which came up just short. Casper was knocked out of the game at the end of second quarter trying to defend an interception being accident kicked in the head by Mark Gastineau. But Richard Caster came in and caught 2 touchdowns including a 68 yard bomb. He was an ex-Jet who was Joe Namath's favorite target in the early 70's. Great speed for a big man. Rob Carpenter suffered a fractured cheek and Cambell was held to 60 yards on 15 carries. The Oilers had to pass on every down because they were trailing badly. Stabler was intercepted by Ken Shroy in first quarter trying to hit Casper and Shroy took it to the house. Mike Barber had incredible game. Jack Tatum made key interception. I had went to the Raiders-Eagles game in Veteran's stadium in Philly and watched 4th quarter on way home in my friend's father's car. It was incredible. Leon Gray was having life and death trying to stop Joe Klecko in first half. But settled in in the 2nd half. Good times.

The same thing that doomed the Raiders in '79 did in the Oilers in 1980...Snake's penchant for the INT. 22 in '79 (after 30! in 1978) and then 28 in 1980, followed by two more killer ones to Lester Hayes (arguably the NFL MVP in '80), including the game sealing pick six in the wildcard return to Oakland.

  • @obbor4

Apparently, you read the stats, but never actually saw the games. As a fan who watched every single Raiders game from 1971 to 1980, I can tell you that, of the 30 picks in 1978, over half bounced off of normally sure handed Raiders receivers into the arms of defensive backs or backers, costing the Raiders many touchdowns and extended drives. As for the Oilers (saw at least 10 of those games, too), after Ken Burrough went down with a broken leg during the pre- season Bum went with a double tight end offense (reuniting Snake with the great Hall of Fame tight end, Dave Casper) with just possession receiver, Mike Renfro, as their main wide out. Earl was the main focus of the offense, as well he should have been, but, make no mistake about it, there can be no blame placed on Stabler for the Oiler loss to his far superior former team, the Raiders, in the playoffs. The of the 70's and early 80's were as good as any team that ever existed in the NFL. Anyone alive at the time could not look you in the eye, with a straight face, and tell you anything different. Nobody ever picked up a single one of those backside corner blitzes and Snake wore Lester Hayes, and the Raider line like a boa constrictor throughout the game. The better team won. Plain and simple.

Dan Pastorini was several years younger than Stabler, and a decent QB in his own right, with less "miles" on his body. Also, RB's Pete Banasak & Clarence Davis had grown older, injured & were gone after 1978. As was - if you'll recall - Coach John Madden, gone after 1978. It was the "perfect storm" then for Houston & Oakland to make deals in 1980. The Raiders re-loaded with Pastorini & RB Kenny King under new Coach Tom Flores, while Houston (feeling they were a player or two away from unseating Pittsburgh) obtained All-Pros Stabler, TE Dave Casper & DB Jack Tatum - ALL from Oakland's playoff core of the 1970's.

Became an Oiler fan during the '80 season. The problem was that Stabler simply was old and couldn't throw the football anymore. It also didn't help that he drank and partied before games. He cost them that Jets game in '80...a game they should have never lost. He threw nearly 30 interceptions that season. Poor Earl Campbell, always saddled with average/below average quarterbacks.

The Oilers had a really good team during that three year stretch they just didn't have a great quarterback. It was probably one of the things that prevented them from winning a super bowl. You do realize that he threw 28 interceptions that season, don't you? I'm not sure how he managed to do it, as much as the Oilers relied on Earl Campbell, or how he kept his job, but somehow he pulled off another miracle. Houston, not so much.

C'mon guys. Stabler had one good year with the Oilers. Only played 2. Stabler was a great, great QB, but I don't quite think his heart was in Houston.

No heart? Stabler's 4 TD's in the 4th quarter of the Oilers-Jets game in 1980 still ties the record of most 4th quarter TDs in a single game....only Tom Brady threw more in one quarter (5). As the announcer said, with the Oilers down 21-0 in the 4th quarter most QBs would have "gone into the tank." Hangover from the night before or not, Stabler came back to rally the Oilers to a 28-28 tie. You can't do that without heart.

Al Davis is like a hero to me but trading stabler and casper away wasn't a smart decision for me although it worked for the Raiders because kenny king was explosive untapped talent but pastorini was a miss thank the lord plunkett was there to right that wrong.

Stabler should not be in the HOF. he only had a few good seasons 1974-77 and he 2as a disaster in houston and new orleans. There is a reason it took 30 years to be enshrined. He spent more time partying than studying football.

Well he won a Super Bowl easily, 32-14 over the Vikings. And he was great at dramatic come from behind wins. What about *The Sea Of Hands* game, beating Miami who had won the previous two Super Bowls. Or *The Ghost To The Post* ? You're full of shit that he couldn't win big games. He is the ONLY QB from the 70's to have a winning record over the Steelers. In a run era when most QB's completed 50 to 55% of their passes, *Snake* hit on 60%. Your comment is a bunch of shit.

I love Kenny Stabler, but he STUNK as a Houston Oiler, FACT! Kenny was a HUGE FLOP as a Houston Oiler, his one winning year on the Oilers, he threw only 13 touchdowns but threw for 30 interceptions. The Oilers won games that year, but none of the winning had anything to do with him. Coach Bum Phillips got fired for trading away winning quarterback Dan Pastorini to bring way over the hill Kenny Stabler to Houston. Kenny Stabler turned hero Bum Phillips into a disgraced loser. TRUMP 2020
