Ken Smith. That tone is super tight, articulate and solid, the high register sounds very clear yet it still has this sweet warmth to it.

IMO the Fodera’s that I own have slightly a better feel than the Smith. The Smith has a flat neck profile, whereas the Fodera is more curved. The flat neck takes a while to get comfortable with.

Did you know that the first 32 Smith Basses have been built by Vinny ? :) I used to own a Smith Black Tiger in the early 2000's but switched to Fodera in 2006 ... to me the Smith has a more "Character" that you can hear straight (especially the Slapsound) and I think there's a good reason Gospel & R&B Players have played them for ages.... the Fodera is more on the Fender tone side which suits my style better.

That’s so cool! Thanks for sharing that piece of history! I agree the Smith has a lot character whereas the Fodera stays neutral in a sense - really related to a Fender J bass.

I really loved what you had to say about these basses. I'm a Fodera owner and I got mine after 20 to 25 years of really wanting one. Spot on with everything you had to say about these basses, and you're right- there's kind of no going back now. The price is high, but it's an investment in the future of a serious musician. Granted, I've seen a lot done with a lot less, but if the opportunity strikes to have an instrument built for you, you should absolutely do it - at least when you know what you want out of an instrument, and you're fairly developed in your playing style. Huge props for using a great track with a great bass part (on every version of that recording, including the Live in DC thing!), and great playing on your part. That song gave people enough space to actually listen to the instrument and form an opinion.

Thanks for your feedback! I’m glad you caught my drift and I’m hoping it was helpful for others too. It’s a different ball game going into boutique basses - and I agree you have to know what you want out of them or else you can waste huge amounts of cash. My intent here was just to state facts and provide clarity. I was once a guy who was closed minded about these instruments but I then began to understand the importance of having a good sound and what great instruments can do to help with that. It changed my perspective forever.

I'm really surprised at how many chose the KS over the Fodera. I've emersed myself in the different sounds of basses for the last couple of years. The KS sounds wonderful. Smooth, clean, precise. The problem for me is that if you weren't allowed to see which bass was being played, I'm not sure you could pick out the KS out of a crowd over any other well-made high-end bass. The reason I like the Fodera, and MTD is because of their unique scooped sound; just like you can pick out a P Bass (mine is a '96 Mexican made), or a Dingwall, or an Alembic without looking at the bass. That's how a bass should be chosen; because of its unique sound, not just it's quality of sound. Enjoyed the video. Subscribed.

Grettings from Costa Rica . I had 3 basses and I sold two of them, a Fender American Standard jazz bass 5 strings and a Yamaha TRB 6 strings, to get the enough money , but it wasn’t enough, I had to use my credit card, to buy a Fodera Emperor Standard, because after to used that first time the Fodera in the store, I thought “ I need this bass in my life “ . This kind of “boutique “ basses don’t make us better bass players, but The sound and the feeling are amazing . Great vid! I had a similar experience, went into a music store will all kinds of exotic bass’s and was at first shocked at how expensive they were. But, after playing a few I could really hear and feel the difference. I picked up a Roscoe and it just spoke to me, was like putting on an old comfortable pair of shoes, the sound the feel everything was amazing. I went in there thinking I’d just look around or maybe buy some strings but dropped a large chunk of change and left with that Roscoe. Liked that one so much I had them build two more for me. I still play some of my other bass’s but my Roscoe’s are my go-to favorites. I can totally relate where you are coming from. I’ve never had a chance to play a Fodera but have play a few Ken Smith’s (I live in the Philly area not far from Ken’s shop), and they are great bass’s they guy really knows what he’s doing!

I own 2 Ken Smith basses. for many year I always have dreamed of ordering a Fodera! until I was in New York on my honeymoon and Sam Ash had one on the 3rd floor.I reserved the time to play it. I tried it and was really disapointed with its sound. The Fodera Craftsmanship is def better than ken smith but thats it. The BSR Elites (fodera flavor) is nothing to the BT walnut neckthrew. regardless of 9v or 18v. funny thing was I when I was in New York trying out the Fodera, I overheard some broadway session bass players making simular comments " Well it depends on what type of style of music your playing " please... if your digging into that bass with a groove and the bass is giving it back with that tone! then all you have to do is sit back and put on the STINK FACE!!! thank you for the upload it was great!!!

Thank you for sharing this testimony as this will help others in the bass community. I totally agree, when a bass is giving there’s nothing else that really matters. That’s the proof in the pudding.

LOL this video is like the best demos of these basses I’ve ever seen, Especially the Fodera. I always want to hear the bass in a musical context. I still can’t pick which I like between the two, but I feel like if you weren’t such a killer player, the Fodera wouldn’t sound as good as the Smith. You made both sound soo good! You’re lucky you don’t have to choose, you got both! Enjoy your videos! Hope you are doing well and safe in the crazy weather in Texas!

Hey thanks for this video, because I wrestle still with this subject! I’m leaning towards the Fodera. I always been in love with Fender Jazz (seems everybody plays jazz) but looking for my sound. So I came across the Yamaha Nathan East BBNE2. I think I’m on to something. Be blessed!!!

Yo! I wrestle as well. It’s kind of hard to pick between the two. Funny enough the Fodera basically have the same tone woods (maple and alder) that of a Fender J bass, so sonically it’s basically a modern J bass. J bass basses are the most versatile instruments IMO. Oh and you can’t never go wrong with a Yamaha!! The quality of those are amazing, enjoy!!

As a Fodera owner I will say the following. For the style and tone required for the song you used to demonstrate both of them, the Smith was way much in tune with what was required for it. I am with you regarding what you had to say about boutique basses, my first one was a Keith Roscoe and all of my defects in my playing were so much more apparent, it became a great tool to fix them to the best of my technic capabilities and to improve of that aspect as well. Nice video...

Goes to show it really just depends on genre and style. Both are amazing basses and for example I prefer the slap tone on the Fodera than Smith for certain things etc. Thanks for your honest feedback!

Thanks for this video. For me it's the Ken Smith in this comparison. Fodera looks and feels great, but to my ears I never really found it to be very distinctive/unique sounding. It's always amazing to hear and see Smith basses. I traded in my 2001 Smith BSR (among others) to enable me to purchase my boyhood dream, a custom Alembic Series 2. And even though this Alembic truly is the best bass I've ever owned, I miss the Ken Smith more than any other bass I've ever sold. If I ever get the chance, I'll buy one back. Great story about boutique basses, I feel the same way. It is so amazing to not only see and hear, but to actually feel the workmanship as soon as you pick up your instrument and in every note that you play.

I’m a Ken Smith player own 3! I was exposed to bouquet Basses here in Detroit at Huber and Breese Music in 2000. Played every hi end bass they had but the Smith did it for me! 7 yrs later got my first Smith (Black Tiger 6 like yours) I talked to Ken Smith himself, it took about 6 months to make! Last year came across 2 more Ken Smith’s 6’s for a reasonable prices and scooped them up! Fodera’s are GREAT but not for me and more pricey!!! Lol!! I’m a gospel bassist, Smith is pretty much the standard. By the way, love you chops and your humble spirit! Be blessed!

Thanks for the compliments and positive vibes!! Absolutely, Smith’s are standard for gospel lol. I think that’s the other factor it really boils down to what genre or style of music you play when deciding which bass is a better fit. I’ve been addicted to Smith basses lol and I owned more than one as well haha. Glad that you’re enjoying yours! Stay blessed man!
