The Fireman story resonates with me. My daughter alway wanted to be a nurse. A teacher told her she was too stupid, not clever enough. After many dead end jobs she did a nursing degree and qualified at the age of 45.

Sir Ken is a very wise man.

He is brilliant, I could listen to him all day ...... and as others says his humour is absolutely brilliant

There is so much to love about this keynote. I completely agree about education being to linear and eliminating creativity. I love Kens humour and of the many quoteable bits "its not enough to be good at something, its about finding the thing that resonates with you most fully" and "Its that point, the point at which natural talent meets a passion". Fab stuff!

Very true. Often these people creating the educationalsystem don´t value creativity at all. Yet they´d not live without television or a trip to the circus or a trip to exotic places...

I love Sir Robinson's delivery. If only teachers and professors made learning so much fun, and with his phylosophy, the world would be a better place, because people would LOVE learning, and then they'll LOVE their jobs 😊

Same happen to me I was classically trained on piano from early age got all my grades in piano went to music university etc etc....I'm now forty something and don't play a note nor have a piano.....because I have no passion nor care for it , I basically realised it was my fathers dream and not mine

He has certainly put more thought into it than most people. If educationalpolitics was made for the sake and security for people then many things would be better and Sir Ken would be elected immediately.

He so eloquently describes all the reasons why I wanted to become a teacher and have a passion for education - but sadly, also the reasons why I left education rather than bang my head against the system for the rest of my life. :-(

I read the book and it is so heavily underlined and now annotated by me that I feel I could recite the entire book. It is a must read for anyone who feels that their day job is leaving them unfulfilled.

The Element = Natural Talent + Passion. Yeah. I remember doing things many years ago that I was talented at but didn't really like. I coined a phrase for this, "The Tyranny of Talent", and I think Sir Ken just affirmed that it is a real thing.

I love what he says about people doing something they are good at, but don't really love. All kinds of people assume that if we are really good at something we must love it. It's so untrue. I'm tremendously good at a few things that other people think I love, two of which I truly despise. I do them only because I'm good at them. Such a great piece of knowledge to impart on the world.

I believe it should be, that people should do what they're interested in. I'm interested in English (because I can write about interesting things) but I'm not a naturally good writer - I have to work hard at it. I believe being good at something, comes hand in hand with caring and being interested in it.

personalities are build with aging, it doesnt came as a package when we are born. thus personality can be build, and most importantly people can change if we give them the right condition. if a person doesnt have passionate personality they should get it, fast. it is a positive changes so there is no point of saying its bad to change. for me, it is just people like you how are too comfort with the current system, that lose your ability to think different, will be Sir Ken's biggest rival.

Passion is by all means the best of humanity and it's drive. But we will not find many people who say they are have a passion for farming. Many want careers in the arts which are easy to express passion but the latent consequence is lack not enough passionate farmers. The market is ungodly.

My husband and I are teachers who plan to open a charter school based in Charlotte Mason’s philosophy of education. If you haven’t heard of her, I encourage you to look her up. Our school will also be a farm school. Reform begins with the individual.

The Queen should Knight him as Sir Ken, a champion to transform via education in his paradigm shifting beliefs that single parents & educators in high crime neighborhoods can implement in their raising at risk youths to become leaders of their community. Once the sons and daughters of the rich & powerful also catch this vision in their hearts and wallets, the world will be as safe as more children are engaged in their passionate learning with less money spent to fund over crowded prison system and more left to fund education!!!

If we could have a world were everyone loved their job and everything about life we would have accomplished a lot. But unfortunately things aren´t lke that.

Zeppin lol no doubt. I agree with Robinson, that schools fail kids, but most kids just fail school. The schools are only responsible for failing the kids that pass.

Ken, I think you may like too see my you tube, when I get around to finishing it- my element is too 'fix the system'. I would've liked my speech/talk completed by end March. Now, I hope and wish to nail this before this month over, April 2013. It will be called "UMBRELLA WOMAN IN 2013...." I'm umbrella woman. It right up your ally. And thanks for your informative words like chocolate they make you feel and think, just right.

i have been in so much pain because all the bits that i carry that are not mine. and yet i cannot get rid of them quite yet, unless i run away from home!

If you keep your head inside all the boxes you probably wont get this. It's about a lot of things, it's not about finding the right teachers, it's about renewing the system of education completely for the needs of the individual rather than for the needs of industrialism.

@MrOnairos It's Ok if it takes decades for it to work, isn't it? I mean a formal education takes decades to work also, and sometimes in the end, it doesn't even work. I was educated as an engineer. After a year and a half gave it up and became a photographer. Now after 20 years of doing that i'm looking for the next thing to do. I think the idea should be that the search must never stop. Whether it be for knowledge, new experiences, new skills, ideas, and ways to contribute.TNX for ur insight

@saeidmomtahan Yes...an education system in which schools are more of a place for discovery and of becoming our best selves rather than just cramming in knowledge of the past, and instilling positive values that last a lifetime. Schools where you learn that life isn't exactly a step by step process and that you don't necessarily have to do one career forever.

I agree with you. I think structure is very important even thought I realize that there are not one way to accomplish a thing, I personally believe that education is like going to the shrink, sometimes a psychologist would tell you that there is something wrong with your childhood to "treat" your current condition. In away its focuses your energy and attention toward something you want to work on will you ignore other stuff.

I recommend people start with educating yourself about the difference between the systems; I recommend this video which explains the difference between Monarchy, Oligarchy, Democracy, Republic and Anarchy - do a youtube search for democracy versus republic. I agree with that video stating that Republic is the best form, it holds stable even though personnel within government shifts. The missing ingredient is stricter regulation on who can add/remove or change the Republic rules.

@saeidmomtahan The general idea is to create a new system that creates situations in which children can discover their talents and perhaps their passion. It would be non-linear, and the child can leave whenever he or she wishes, but the goal is to instill the values and have an environment where the child can grow into his or her true self, and using his or her talents and passion to contribute to society in his or her own way. Highly experimental, will likely take decades of work.

"It is not about standardizing..." - I think this is the main point and it is one that was missed by whoever cooked up the so-called common core idea.

I prefer those terms, because liberalism in its original sense described Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Ayne Rand and even Alexander Hamilton to an extent, not Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Barrack Obama, or Elizabeth Warren. If you did, the answer to your interrogative statement is, yes.

Kraven Moorehead - I will agree with your classification adjustments entirely. What being liberal once meant has no connection to the current corporate authoritarianism that we live under. And that is just the tip of the iceberg of evil that they do. I am not familiar with Elizabeth Warren but will try to investigate her. We get news about all the others here in Israel, although far less than what you must be inundated with there. Brave New World and 1984 have unfortunately arrived and are functioning, and they are our worst nightmare and certainly nothing that Jefferson would have recognized. It all started off so well, I am in shock at what has happened. And our educational system has kept us all in the dark. The crimes committed by the government against its own citizens go under various guises. But something is wrong with a society that locks up so many people. Prisons as a business are not what they were intended to be originally. And there are so many other issues. Heaven help us to defeat all this evil.

Makes me realise that I neither love nor hate my job. This challenges my passion and commitment...I'm qualified, competent but honestly bored. Can you find passion in the job or would new passions need to be discovered?

You are are my greatest mentor! My grandson knew everything in kindergarten but wasn't interested in raising his hands or sharing his thoughts. Teacher recommended he was held back. Duh! If it didn't work the first time, why would we do it again? Then in the 2nd grade, a school suggested a dr who wanted to put him on Vyvanse; a form of amphetamine . Regarding prisons, prisons are Big Money! Plz revolutionize the prison system as well! lol! It is their goal to increase the inmates not decrease!
