I watched him from the round of 32 to the final in Dec 1995 on my 2nd season on the NS. He was so much better than everyone at Pipe/Backdoor during that time thru 1998-99 it was CRAZY.

KS was playing around with alternative shapes even when he was riding CI boards. He would have had a few more championship if he rode normal board (crazy if you think about that) but I think he just got bored with standard equipment.

My favorite video ever,Kelly surfed switch at moments and moved his feet around the board more than any surfer I had ever seen. Timeless video 😊

@0:12 - They used to do better lip climps back then. This is one I always remember. Pretty much perfect. One of the best front side ones I can reminder was from 80s Op Pro (heat with curren and buran) - small waves. I think it was the longer boards (again) that let them do stuff like this. Always liked the lip climb maneuver, and we kinda lost it from competitive surfing. Everyone just hops to the ramp now.

Thank you so very much for posting this. No generation this particular section his backside section is vicious, but in the most beautiful sense of the word. Getting completely upside down and not upside-down backside but his nose pointing at like 90 or 95 degrees that's how vertical he can get his backside snap. And yeah he also had hair which cracks me up because that's how I remember us spending time at the Johnson's Garage. Mahalo Uncle Bobby

Been saying it for years. Kelly was WAY better in his early days. Compared to back then he squats like POTO nowadays - on silly little round boards.

He should have never left Merrick it was one of the dumbest moves ever. And year after year when he was on garbage firewire he should have admitted he was wrong folded with firewire and gone back to Merrick. He would have been absolutely ripping on Merricks. It’s painful to watch him ride boards that the rails dig, they chatter and can’t make sections. Dude has enough money that he could have walked from firewire it’s sad he chose to stay with them

@@michaelb7864Ego, my friend. I agree, Merrick knows more about right boards for Kelly's than himself

I’ve been saying it for years to my friends and I wonder if anyone else feels the way I do….. Slater leaving Channel Island/Merrick for garbage firewire was probably one of the biggest mistakes in the history of all sport nevermind just surfing. He never ever looked the same on firewires. They are chattery squirly boards that everyone knows are garbage. And if you don’t think they are my question is why don’t you see any other pros riding them? Answer is because they are trash compared to Merrick, lost, JS, Pyzel, list goes on and on. Slater would have gotten another title or even two had he stayed with Merrick fact

Good conversation for sure. Not a fan of Firewire. Taj surfed pretty good on them I suppose. But Taj was a freak. I always felt that if Kelly would have chosen better boards his surfing would have been better. The short lame boards they ride now make them all look like kids with weird bottom turns and no flow.
