Getting ready to take the kids for an over nighter and I figured I'd test out the new stove I'm going to be using.

Shane, one mod that I've found worthwhile is to get some stainless steel shim stock, form it around the firebox base, and drill a hole the same size as the air intake. By aligning the holes, you have full heat, but you can offset them reducing the air intake for a slower burn. Any leftover shim stock can be made into a clip on spout extension so the spillage from fast boil doesn't go in the fire pan. The shim stock for the draft control can pack around the kettle itself or anywhere really so it all still nests together.

Nice video! I'm a prepper and have a lot of MRE's and other freeze dried foods just just need a little hot water for instant meals, so I chose the Base Camp model, largest. It's my emergency stove and water kettle. No use having all the instant meals and dry pack canned staples and no hot water. I like that I never have to store fuel because bio fuel is all around outdoors. I can use creek, lake or river water and boil to purify for safe drinking and usage. Three methods to cook regular food - top, hobo stove and grill right on the fire base. It's a must for emergency food prep.

Wawhiker I really enjoyed it. I know the boys are going to like it. (After they get a little safety rundown) I think it's a wonderful car camp option or maybe even a little boat ride companion. I hope you and Cooper are doing well. Thanks for coming along. Shane

Nice.. the kelly kettle has been my go to stove for a long time.. so much fun and so reliable even in the wet.. I haven't used it much wildcamping lately, it is quite bulky.. the trangia replaced it. More stealthy. It now serves at work (forestry) and lives in my car.. Cheers

Cheezehead Chris we will!! Also, we'll be sharing it as well. The stove did a wonderful job. It was like using two different stoves once I switched to the Hobo setup. I can see many uses and meals down the road with this gem Thanks for watching and commenting. It's appreciated!

Great video, Shane. Am trying to decide between the Scout and the Trecker. For stability, the Scout. For packability..the Trecker. It has to fit in my big saddle bags. It is hard to fine them all in one place to see and touch. Totally sold on the Kelly Kettles, though. Maybe, one of each...maybe Santa will hear my hopes! Good job.

+BarbedStar both would be a great option. Lol! Remember, you can always fill the kettle again and again if you’re drinking a lot of tea, coffee or, just add water meals. A trekker wouldn’t be too bad, personally.. if I have the room I’ll take a larger stove any day. That’s just my preference though. A trekker would fit your needs just fine though. Especially, with the Hobo set up.

Now that the Trekker comes as complete kit, I think that may be my way to go. For cooking, the stability of the Hobo would be the main cooking unit. I am a rocket stove nut, so you know, the Kelly Kettles are for me. Thanks for the reply.

Shane.. Came back for a second watch of this video. Just received my K. K. Scout. Price too good to not buy. No cups, plates, hobo, but new about $45 off reg. price. Just unboxed so playtime is coming. Beautifully built. 2 Wildo expandable large foldacups squished together go into pots and everything still nests. They hold a good 2 cups with at least 1/2 clearance to top. Sturdy, even when hot yet material of cups protects hands. Nice size for coffee or soup. FYI Off to get the hobo stove top and to thrift shop to make it a great total kitchen! Haven't tried it in my saddle bags yet, but may fit in the old military ones. No matter, It's a keeper. Who knows I might find a dynamite price on a Trecker kit one day. Keep those kidlets camping!

  • @DutchOvenDoins

I like it but see a potential problem. Using long twigs vertically when it reaches a boil, you take it off, refill and now the twigs won't let you place the kettle back on.

  • @Adventure_Coffey

DutchOvenDoins I see what our saying, I used it al weekend and I did put it back on a few times after I pulled it off. If I let it burn down a bit, it wasn't a problem. I just had to be conscious of that before hand. It's really a cool stove and boils water super fast. It worked great for two days of camping for 3 of use. Just like anything, it has its quarks. Not many though. Thanks for commenting. Take care Shane
