Keith had the ability to sing a song and make you believe he wrote it. If he had lived longer I have no doubts that he would still be on top today
Such a great voice.
Willie Nelson wrote this song. It is on his 1973 Shotgun Willie album
Whitley sure hits home tonight
Don Willie Nelson wrote this and I believe in my heart that it was his way of mourning the beginning of the death of traditional Country Music and the stories contained in the lyrics. Personally I prefer Keith Whitley’s cover. Great choice as a request Larry for a truly relatable song in more ways than one. Don great reaction, thanks as always.

It is my opinion that Willie Nelson is quiet an under rated song writer..

@@shamnet indeed he is! I agree 100%
I love Keith whitley. Will always be one of my favorite artists
This was written by Willie Nelson in 1973. Love a waltz.
Great one and I have never heard it before so I have to agree with you it's awesome and I myself love the way it sounds, perfect perfection is the only way to say it
He done a some Bluegrass albums before he started doing country albums
I believe that sad songs are almost always selling in country music. This is one that I hadn't heard previously from Keith. Thanks much for the play, Larry and Don.
You have to listen to his song I Get The Picture just awesome
Cheers from a fan up in Canada Willie Nelson original (written and recorded in ‘74) off of my favourite Nelson album, Shotgun Willie. Definitely a classic, and damn nice cover! Good video sir!
Great song! Keith was an incredible singer/ songwriter. Sometimes a sad song is necessary to help move you through a time in your life of sorrow. I feel they have a place whether they're popular or not. When I drank, "Whiskey River" was a go to sad song. When I recalled the multiple people who cheated on me my go to song was, "I'll pray For You" by Jaron. When I recall the memories of abuse, my go to song is "Gunpowder and Lead" or "Before He Cheats". I like the idea of getting back at them for hurting me, however, I love 4x4's so I could never beat one up with a Louisville slugger. The thought however makes for a good song and sometimes gives you satisfaction just thinking about it. The most abusive thing I ever did was throw a casserole at my ex when he came in at 3am drunker than cooter brown after he begged me for two days to make his favorite casserole for supper and he didn't show up to eat it... Lol. Just say'n sad songs do have a purpose even if their not popular.
Didn't know this one. What a great song! Damn, Keith was good. Funny. Taylor Swift crossed my mind while listening to this, too.
good reaction This song was done by Ernest Tubb and Gene Watson so it's not new.
I don’t care what anyone says Tyler Childers does the best version of this song.
Such a great song, and Kieth's performance is perfect. I love the sentiment of the business being the driver of what gets played rather than the art. It's so true and it's a pretty sad statement on the state of things. I think this has a lot to do with why today's radio is filled with "everything sounds the same", it's so hard for anything that's a little different to get any air time. I remember KT Oslin once saying in an interview: "to make it in the music business you have to be young, thin, and pretty --- and I'm none of those, so why am I here?". It was a time period when the business was open to "different"; I wish those days would come back soon. And KT Oslin was a truly terrific artist. Thanks Larry for the great request, and thanks Don for another insightful reaction!
this was recorded before he hit the big time. i have that album and literally EVERY song on there is a winner!
Tyler Childers and his wife does this song.
At the time this song was recorded(Around 1980) Keith was the lead vocalist and guitarist for JD Crowe’s bluegrass band The New South. JD knew Keith wanted a career in mainstream Country so he produced some sessions for Keith… this recording is one of them. The recordings got the attention of RCA and the rest, as they say, is history. A good one for you to check out and react to would be J D Crowe and The New South with “My Home Ain’t In The Hall Of Fame.” It was recorded not long before this.
Keith Whitley is one of those voices that one has to admit could have been true king of country. I am not certain BUT I think Willie Nelson wrote this song. OR at least he had something to do with this song. Awesone song, great writing for sure.
