My dad grew up in Pete Rose's minor league town in 1960. Said he was the guy always buying lottery tickets in town.

What this fails to fully address is that Pete Rose is dumb as dirt and he was led to slaughter by inept lawyers. Key to the ruling that validated the suspension was that no explicit finding of guilt was agreed to which is where the one year reinstatement technicality comes in. Giamatti then said directly at the press coverage that he determined Rose bet on baseball which was a violation of the wording of the agreement. Rose's lawyers apparently counseled him to surrender the fight, take what they told him would be temporary punishment because no finding of guilt existed and a year later he would be back. Giammati then announced instead that Rose was guilty and the ban was technically reviewable but really amounted to a life-time ban. The video I would love to find is Rose reacting to the news. He appeared totally caught off guard and genuinely thought he had agreed to a one year ban. But then when he finally acknowledged his transgressions decades later that ended any chance of a reinstatement.

I have absolutely no sympathy for Pete rose. It's not like baseball put him in prison.
