Sarah Schulman and Jim Hubbard, co-directors of the groundbreaking ACT-UP Oral History Project, join Jeanne Liotta for a discussion on art and film in the AIDS era. Together they will converse about the context of this era in New York City as they lived through it, reflecting on grassroots social change and the overlapping concerns of artists and activists.
Sarah Schulman and Jim Hubbard are co-founders of the NY Lesbian and Gay Experimental Film/Video Festival (now called MIX NYC). Schulman’s latest book Let The Record Show: A Political History of ACTUP in New York is forthcoming in May 2021. She is a Professor of Humanities at the College of Staten Island NY and also serves on the advisory board of Jewish Voice for Peace. Hubbard has been making films and videos since 1974. He curated Fever in the Archive: AIDS activist videotapes from the Royal Marks Collection or the Guggenheim Museum NYC, and created the AIDS Activist Video Collection at the New York Public Library.
Jeanne Liotta is an artist, filmmaker, and professor of Moving Image Arts at CU Boulder.
Schulman and Hubbard’s film United in Anger will be screened by the Denver Film Society on their online screening platform in conjunction with this event.
