Keith Haring Uncovered (excerpt)

In 1984 American artist Keith Haring visited Australia and created a mural in Collingwood, Melbourne.
Produced by Renegade Films and directed by Bec Peniston-Bird, Keith Haring Uncovered tells the story of how the mural came to be and follows the conservation project that sparked debate in 2013. Above is an excerpt from the full documentary.
The mural, on a wall of the soon-to-be opened Collingwood Arts Precinct, is one of just 31 known murals by Haring that are still in existence worldwide.

Keith Haring comes across as such a sweet, gentle and honest human being. love his art. its 'simplicity' enables it to continue through transfer into different forms of art and crafts. his art may be sold for millions in the halls of major auctions but the principles can be applied on the streets from where it was born.

Perfect example of the power of street art and how it raises awareness.

I didn't know his name but in 1992, I bought the cd Red, Hot Dance with his work on the cover. I just found out about him from Debora Iyall's (Romeo Void) video playlist. I was a teen in the 80's, so I didn't know about him when he was alive.

Sorry, where's Delancey? Is that in Australia or the US? And what a great story. Sorry to hear that the menu got thrown away, but you still got to meet him, that's amazing,

@@NiceButBites Downtown New York, I'm saddened by the number of people over 50 ( I'm 57 ) who haven't heard of Keith. He deserves to have a major following like Warhol

@@joeambrose3260 Yeah he really does. His work is quite well known, particularly from branding, but less so him. He had his first solo exhibition in the UK last year in Liverpool and I went, and it was amaaazing. So many pieces of his all gathered together under one roof, that I'd either never seen before, or, only ever seen in books.

In Rome my city instead in 1992 the mayor Franco Carraro decided to "clean up" the walls of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni so as not to make a bad impression on Michail Gorbachev and thus canceled a work by Keith Haring, the same did the mayor Francesco Rutelli in 2001 , about ten years after Haring's death, deleting another mural, the one created on the transparent walls of the Tiber Bridge for the jubilee I think .. so as not to offend the faithful. Probably neither of them knew much about art otherwise it would have been enough to cover them up , however the fact remains that the damage done is inestimable as today Keith 's paintings are being auctioned for millions of $ . PS : Carraro in part I can also understand it was 92 , being ignorant of the artist he probably thought he was deleting worthless murals ... but Rutelli in 2001 had no justifications he knew very well who Keith Haring was , a reckless action completely devoid of common sense , as if today someone decided to cancel a work by Barnsky to clean up a wall.
