Haring had championed the poster format as a traditional form of political activism. He saw in them the immediacy which we now think of when we think of his aesthetic.
It was in 1982 that he created one of his first posters. He printed and paid for 30,000 of them, which he gave out for free during an anti-nuclear protest in New York. He would use his platform to get us talking about socio-political issues often ignored, by employing a tradition used by political agitators since printing began.

I believe there is a reason he's never looked into or 'gotten'. Namely his art while recognisable is sill depraved of any skill or depth (not just in the literal sense). And is only good for making t-shirts these days.

I remember his art being kind of everywhere as a kid. It really embodied the 90s in a way no other artist really has. You'd see his art or imitations in music videos, and interstitials and stingers on MTV or other places. The bright colors bled into the fashion even, especially in the early 90s. It's a shame he passed so young, because his message was so simple that even as a kid you kind of got it. Just be cool, love each other, have fun, live life, let others live theirs.

My parents are the same age as Keith Haring would have been (65 this year, they were all born in 1958) and they both lived in New York during the 80’s, when he was active as an artist. Both of my parents have said that he, more than any other artist of that era, perfectly captured what The City was like back then. It captured the energy and electricity on one end and the fear and righteous anger on the other. His pieces are the closest thing we have to time capsules of New York during the AIDS Epidemic and the Reagan years.

So true. Keith, paved the way for Banksy. He was white but understood and paid homage to black and latino street artist. He used his “privilege” for good. I cried for a long time when he passed. As a southern, sis, hetero, Af. American I had the pleasure of visiting his store that celebrated all people when that was dangerous, and buying his art to support his charity. I loved him so much and hate that he’s not with us today. ❤

We all talked about it -how young they all were dying from something so cruel and unusual. The diagnosis was elusive. Thank you for your bringing those difficult times to the forefront and thank you to Keith Haring and his courage. RIP Keith

I started my career in medicine with my BSN in '86 and remember all too well those first men whose symptoms confounded the establishment and the fear that ran through both the medical community and the general public. My own parents tried (and failed) to discourage me from employment in large city hospitals on the East Coast, convinced I would become sick myself. Nearly 40 years of my adult life has been dedicated to the art of medicine. My heart still breaks when I see ignorance and fear being pushed as a reasonable response to people just living their lives. Every time I think society has finally gotten collectively smarter, something happens that shows me we can NEVER stop fighting back against the hatred and homophobia that seems every bit as pervasive today as it was in the 80's.

In the still photo of Keith standing with Basquiat and Scharf, the younster in the hat and shades is Angel Ortiz. He was a regular collaborator of Keiths. He was like an adopted little brother to Haring. Most of the lines indicating motion in the pieces are concocted by Ortiz. This man has gotten little if any credit for his talent. He is a legendary Lower East Side street artist. Went by the moniker of LAII. He spent alot of time in the shadows and was privy to the machinations of the nyc art world in the 80s. Respect where it is due.

It’s not lame at all. Just by comparison I started reading a book that attempted to define the history of civilization in 6 great plagues. I was so bogged down by the necessary information overload that I lost interest. He does a great job of concisely providing just the right amount of information as well as the context.. which is often missing in analysis of art. The viewer gets the impression that the creator is “core dumping”.. either to sound intelligent or satisfy critics. I’ve never had that feeling in his content. Not that he doesn’t go into detail, but he explains the context.. the “why”.

Around 10 years ago I was looking for an artist with a body of work that would be appealing and exciting for my 5 year old pupils to learn about. I stumbled on Keith Haring and fell in love with his artwork and his life story. Since then every year I show my class some of the most fun, joyful works in his repertoire and teach simply about this loving, generous man who wanted art to be available for all, and who gave so much of himself to others in need. Every year the response to the artwork is joyful and full of laughter. The work is simple enough for the children to reproduce in their own way and my class becomes a bright, vibrant space for a few weeks. I have so much respect for this man and I keenly feel the tragedy of his early death. So tragic that this most tolerant and caring individual was doomed to early death by the intolerance and bigotry of mainstream society at that time. Sadly, those attitudes seem to be having a resurgence in this present moment.

In the early 80s, I attended a Catholic elementary school in East NY, Brooklyn run by Irish nuns (student body- 99% Caribbean/Latino). In our schoolyard we had a very long handball wall that ran the length of the yard and at the start of every schoolyear in September there was a new massive, fantastic (sometimes slightly X-rated) graffiti mural painted on it. Rumor had it our principal (Mother Superior Sister Carol) commissioned a new mural every year from one the local gangs (Sister Carol had connections!). I also remember our 3rd grade art teacher bringing in an unfinished documentary about graffiti (Style Wars) to show us on a reel projector. Riding the bus and subways to school (Generation X latchkey kids), I vividly remember Keith Harings' chalk artwork , though had no idea at the time who did them, of course). Man, NYC in the 1980s was crazy. It wasn't all good, but it was a strange magical time. Thank you so much for this essay and the memories it brought back.

Haring is not hung up in many public galleries in NYC, nor is Basquiat. I always had this theory that these artists were not taken seriously in life, and then in death most of their works were bought privately. I am a living survivor with AIDS. At 68, I have seen many friends die from the disease. It's difficult to blame anyone, but I can't help but wonder if Reagan had admitted to the epidemic, what could have happened. The president and his wife denied everything until his 7th year in office and Ryan White died at age 13 getting AIDS from a blood transfusion. The art community has always been filled with the LGBTQ+ community. To think that politics would overrule a devastating disease is unconsciousable, but through ignorance and fear it happened and unfortunately with COVID, it happened again. Great Art and the Artists are being silenced and to be silent is being complicent.

@@GreatArtExplained seriously tho, it's a great balance of informative and entertaining. I love the subject matter but know very little about it which is why I particularly like the channel. Most other platforms either talk down or are up themselves. Keep up the excellent content.

I absolutely love this channel, such great work. The amount of art, and context, and information about the art that you get in 15 mins is astounding. So effectively injects soul into my day. Thank you so much, James Payne.

such an amazing and profound video on an artist that shares those same qualities . artists that constantly look to reach out to the general public as much as humanly possible truly display their passion and belief in the impact of creativity . i love your content , i’ve been loving this channel since day one . been on a bit of decline in my personal art history studies , but this video may get me back into looking at the origins of street art ! on summer break and needed this , love your channel !

Another gem video. Thanks for all of the amazingly curated video clips. I could not resist looking up the Grace Jones video where KH is so nicely featured. That music video is a piece of art as well, but seeing him actually creating the magnificent piece worn by Grace Jones made that video even more special..

I never liked the aesthetic of Haring's work, and, if I am honest, the aesthetic still isn't my thing. But the man, his philosophy on art, and his politics are something I can stand behind. Thank you for providing an entry to understanding an artist I previously knew nothing about. I am always glad to learn about art from your channel. A lot of the artists you talk about are like Haring; I don't like the aesthetic of the art, but I can still *appreciate* what it is doing thanks to now having a better understanding of it. Thank you for all the hard work you put into these videos.

As a mother/aunt of people in their late teens/early 20s as well as someone who works with this same age group how many are not only fans of Haring's work but know about his life and philosophy. Perhaps it is his philosophy about work being for the masses and the way he would go against the establishment to get his art out there appeals to young people today. Regardless, this video really gave me a lot to think about and appreciate. I grew up in the 80s and 90s. Haring's work is of course instantly recognizable. I didn't know much about him until watching your video. Thank you!
