-------------------------------
Keith Emerson was a huge inspiration for me as a musician and Hammond Organ player. My musical journey thus far would not be the same without his influence and performance fireworks. In 2007, the original line-up of my band Big Organ Trio was in full swing, and Keith, accompanied by his long time girlfriend Mari, made several trips out to see us play at our residency in Santa Monica. This is a tiny stage in a local watering hole that features music in the back room, but that's what made it special for Keith. Here he had none of the pressure of a large concert or tour. As you will see, in this intimate yet relaxed environment, he could just let loose, have fun and let it rip. He simply loved playing the Hammond so much, whether in a classical vein, jazz vein, or straight up rockin' blues. This pure joyous freedom of expression is the primal reason I was drawn to playing an instrument in the first place.
This night Keith hopped up behind my beloved Hammond B3/Leslie and called out Freddie King's "Hideaway". We decided to trade riffs standing behind my rig together, and go all out! There's no holding back on this version of Hideaway, as we push the B3 to its limit. What fun! He even starts things off with a little nod to Tarkus! To me, this is one of the most sacred things about playing an instrument: the joy of expressing your unique inner soul. There are billions of people who have lived and passed on, yet in the face of that unimaginably large number, we are all unique. That night I had the opportunity to express this spiritual reality with one of my musical idols. Most importantly, I hope anyone who watches this video sees how much joy and happiness just playing music and being in the moment brought to Keith.
- Mike Mangan -
P.S. Without his wonderful longtime girlfriend Mari, this night would not have happened.

Even with Keith's trouble with hes right hand the guys a legend, nice to see him relaxed and playing a growling old Hammond. When I saw keith first play with the Nice in 1968 here in the UK I was totally hooked to Keith's music . Keith was an innovator, brilliant musician and exciting to watch. I miss him so much as he was my musical hero. When keith then Greg died it was like a big part of my life had gone, even now when I listen to certain ELP music it make me feel emotional. RIP Keith and Greg. Great video, thanks for putting it on here👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Amen. Keith, you and Greg both are missed by so many people who loved you. I hope that you both can feel that love all the way up in heaven, where you both are young and free from any pain. I know your both rockin heaven with all of your friends, who went before and after you. Cozy, John, Chris, Gary, are all up there with you and what a concert that must be. Neither of you will ever be forgotten as long as there is one person on this earth who loves your music.

Saludos!!?

Becky Hernandez Thanks so much Becky. Indeed it was fantastic to have one of my idols show up to see my band and then, on top of it, decide to sit it and play with me on my rig. This was the first of several other times Keith came down and sat in and/or watched our gig. He was as gracious a gentleman as you could meet. This performance is from 2007. Cheers.

Becky Hernandez That's fantastic about your group! And you're very welcome. Another tid bit of information I can offer which I find fascinating is while chatting quite extensively with Keith about music, he disclosed to me one of his huge early influences on the Hammond Organ: Jack Mcduff. Specifically McDuff's 1963 release "Live!". Even more specifically the first track "Rock Candy". Turns out I had listened to this track, and album, hundreds of times (in headphones) and it was a huge influence on me as well. The fascinating thing about it was that McDuff got this crunchy, distorted tone on the organ which was different than anything that preceded it, especially on "Rock Candy". I had analyzed that tone over and over. To my pleasant surprise Keith told me this tone was a big part of what inspired him to push the tonal limits of the Hammond Organ even further.

I kind of wish Emerson's right hand had become completely paralysed, if that would have forced him to go only left handed. The guy's left hand was a MACHINE!! Wouldn't be surprised if he could play Tarkus eventually with just his left hand! Or, if it could have made him see that his time had come regarding praise from the musical community and becoming the fantastic statesman of keyboards. To have a progressive medical condition that gradually pulls away what you're trying to do.....especially if you suffer the "black dog"....I'm afraid it was too much for our friend. I can only hope that as time goes on his place in keyboard history becomes more broadly appreciated. He was NOT just the guy who burnt the American flag with the Nice and stabbed/wrestled with an organ!!
