For over four decades Keiji Haino has pursued an intensely personal vision of what psychedelic music can be, drawing influence from music as disparate as Billie Holiday, The Doors, Blue Cheer, Munir Bashir, Hossein Alizâdeh, and countless others. They all have one thing in common: their mission is the same as Haino’s own, that is to push the music further on and further out into the infinite.
In his 2014 Red Bull Music Academy lecture, Keiji Haino guided us through his unique ways of thinking, his unusual DJ style, his approach to learning new instruments, and more.

It's a bit surprising to see Red Bull hosting this. But thank you so much for all you guys are doing. Haino-san's view on music, life and world are inspiring. I've been loving his music since I was 15, and he changed the way I look and listen to things. As he said, live positively!

Jacek Kaczmarski - Armor You have given me, O Lord, armor; Ancient armorer forged it. In many battles bent, In Many baptized with blood. Forged for a giant I stumble at each step, Because as blackmail of conscience It oppresses the left side. But even thou helmet and sword are lost, For the body there is no refuge in it, And in the end, it's an important thing - Armor!... Magic runes on it, Today, one can not read, But carved with myths And eternal is like a myth! It clung to my body, Disturbs my life and sleep, But the crowd is happy with the dwarf, Who wants to play the giant! But even thou helmet and sword are lost, For the body there is no refuge in it, And in the end, it's an important thing - Armor!... And such seriousness in it Of blood dried long ago, That I feel its demand It orders me to grow. Perhaps in vain But I will stand in it for a hundred! Take it off, O Lord, from me, If I die in my sleep! But even thou helmet and sword are lost, For the body there is no refuge in it, And in the end, it's an important thing - Armor! They yelled the password - War! They woke hordes of troops, Raped the calm night Witnesses first murder. Burning fresh wounds, Shamed face aflamed - But to us, to defend ourselves, given Our armour of memory! So while the rains blow blow And the enemy sends reinforcement in convoys, It protects us from falling still - Armor! They dragged out boxes of sheet metal, Inserted bullets into barrels And haunt - themselves in fear Shoot at bodies and words. Forbid fire to live! Let the rape triumph! Above each body let there rise shape of a living memory! Although the sun hid in combat gas And soldier wallows in his crimes, Still from the fall protects us - Armor! They trained the pigs, They bought themselves dogs And in empty words temple They set the bloody altar; Laments before an idol Half-blind liar priest And with each new sentence Hardens our breastplate. Although our time choked with blood, Though thoughts are drowning in paranoias, As always, will protect us - Armor!

It's so strange that Haino-san found out Kaczmarski intresting, since his style is, I'd say, the complete opposite of what Haino-san is doing. Kaczmarski is a typical "revolutionary" singer, writing his own poetic lyrics with deep historical and existential meaning. In contrast to Kaczmarski, Haino-san turns out as almost narcissistic.

  • @noense

I think it's just because of musical and cultural background. I'm russian and grew up listening to bards (even if i wasn't interested in them) and I'm familiar with the style of perfomance from my childhood. There are several japanese folk musicians like Kan Mikami or Kazuki Tomokawa that perform their songs pretty harsh, yet they carry somewhat different energy. Look at this from a musical standpoint. Kaczmarski croons over fast monotone guitar strums with lots or close to none chord changes. It sounds like 'a typical rebel song' Keiji stated, but it is kind of hypnotic and feels like stream of consciousness of rebelious mind, in a way like hymn that massess chant on rallies. For me Haino's music is a huge struggle with expressing oneself in musical form, that's why he talks about 'music of the moment' and how he 'avoids to repeat things'. Maybe he hears this struggle in Kaczmarski's music as well. Maybe he just relates to this mood so much. Anyway, there's always will be Keiji Haino as a musician and Keiji Haino as a listener. I respect both.
