Keeping London's pie and mash tradition alive | Arments

Pie and mash has been a staple food for Londoner's for hundreds of years. But as the capital change's dramatically, the market for this classic dish is shrinking.
This National Pie Week, Steve Barker from south London institution Arments, shows us how the business is adapting to the future, while staying true to its traditions.

What people have to remember is that pie and mash was a cheap meal for the working people. Now that we have food from all over the world people forget plain good food. I personally like all different kinds of meals but i still like a good pie and mash dinner.

They are not Mash Pies. The pie is traditionally beef mince. Then the dish is finished with a side of Mashed Potato and a generous helping of Liquor. Liquor is parsley based sauce but it used to be made from the water left over when stewing the Jellied Eels. If you want mash potato pies - probably closest would be the Butter Pie from Lancashire.

you are welcome. If you enjoy pot pies, stews with things like peas and carrots check out the Lancashire Hot Pot - a dish now a few hundreds years old with its origins in the Industrial Revolution. Up in the north of England we have a few of these types of dishes, Lancashire Hot Pot, Irish Stew, Scouse (Lobscouse). They were relatively cheap and easy to make, still popular because its food you eat when you get home cold and wet and its often cold, wet and miserable here ha. @@Emily-Whitfield

Pie & Mash tasty? 🤣; if you believe Pie & Mash is tasty then your exposure to cuisines is EXTREMELY limited. British savoury meals are some of the most blandest; the only half decent British meal is cooked breakfast; the British also score well when it comes to their baked potatoes, aside from these British savoury meals are EXCRUCIATINGLY bland. However, the British score highly when it comes to desserts and confectionery; not when it comes to your savoury meals.

@@Mike_5 My comment on British savoury meals is a FACT; ask people of any country that is renowned for immensely pleasurable food what their opinion is on British savoury meals and they will do a vomiting gesture implying that traditional British savoury meals are puke; take the example of Fish & Chips, straight out of a deep-fryer the only flavour that comes through is that of cooking oil; whereas Mexican and Indian savoury meals straight out of the pot or deep-fryer taste of multitude of different flavours and thats even without any condiments. The only foods that the British excel at are desserts and confectionery, not savoury meals.
