Keeping grizzly bears safe on and off the roadways!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

When it comes to monitoring and managing bears, it is usually because of roadways and human activity are present in the area. Where ever man has disturbed the landscape or opened up the canopy for roads, trails, or developement, it provides way better plant growth and because of that the bears will be there to feed. One obstacle they have is when it comes to crossing highways and roads. In many regions where there are bear programs, bear aversion technicians, bear guardians, CO's, volunteers, biologists, etc, teach bears to be aware and weary when present around roadways. They do everything from aversion conditioning to educating the public in hopes of keeping the bears (and people) safe and co-existing on the same landscape.
In this video I have compiled several clips of bears crossing the road, some will show staff present, there to slow or stop traffic, as well as to get the bear/people to move off safely before a "bear jam" creates unsafe moments for both people and the bears.
If you head out into bear country, whether to work, camp, hike, live or recreate, it is all our responsibilities to slow up and pay attention for wildlife on our roadways. Most places would like when you see a bear to do the slow and go, or to stop further back and never to park on them. For those who don't know what a "Bear Jam" is, it is when several vehicles sit and park on a bear, many times with people out of the vehicle to take pictures. Seen in the past is eventually the animal gets spooked and bolts. Bear jams quickly become a safety issue for people from the bears, as well as people from passing traffic, and the bears from the traffic that are often doing highway speed.
Hope you enjoy this video from my time over the years involved in bear management.

3:08, HOLY COW!!!! Her cubs are GIGANTIC!!! Glad to see all 3 made it to the 2nd year. Your videos are GREAT, the zooms when they cross the road are exemplary. The detail in the paw pads and nails are amazing, not to mention the breathtaking scenery. That is one of my favorite places in the world, you are indeed blessed.

Hello Mr. Bear Guy! I really want to Thank you for sharing your awesome Grizzly Bear videos, they ALWAYS put a happy smile on my face!!! 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 I have been taking my Mom's passing pretty hard, it'll be 3 years this next November that she's been gone and I really hate it!! But, I must say your AWESOME videos of your AWESOME Grizzlies are SINCERELY helping, just by watching those cute, sweet little precious bottoms trot across a road or following Momma Grizzly down into a ravine or just standing there looking at your camera looking positively adorable, I really can't help but to smile, and I honestly THANK YOU! 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗

Majestic creatures. I’m glad there are guardians for them in some places. Last time I was in Yellowstone I was appalled at how many cars were zooming through the park. Wasteful and risky. Please know you are appreciated.

The two year old resting it's head is actually peaking over at her mom who was feeding down the slope. Mom had booted her and returned to mating. The cub would track mom over the summer and keep her distance.

Over the years there has been a few half hearted bluff charges at the work truck, they get to recognize the bear aversion and CO trucks, and know they should be moving off. For the most part it doesn't happen too often, but with that said. During mating season, accidently get too close to a large dominant male and they will charge any vehicle, on one occassion, a skidster got charged.

What I have seen over my years is the posted speed is usually ok, but people will always go 20-25km over it which now is way too fast. The biggest issue is in protected areas there isn't enough speed enforcement, there's just not the manpower unfortunately. The other side of it is, back in the day heading into the mountians used to be something special, now its taken for granted, people are entitled, and they speed like hell to where they're going. Essentially places like parks and protected lands are turned into a playground, there's been a huge shift over the last 5-8 years, huge.

it's an easy answer, it's called habitat fragmentation roads and tons of houses in valleys are the biggest offenders, welcome to our climate crisis, big animals losing their homes is just a small example
