    I absolutely love when people do this! When someone shows literally step by step how and why they do what they do it gives me such a sense of relief and eases my anxiety when I’m trying to figure out how to do it myself! I never copy what you and the other homeschool moms show but it helps me so much with a starting point, a place to begin, how something can look and I take it from there and make it my own for our family. So thank you!❤

    I love this idea of a mother's diary. I have a journal for each child where I record special memories or fun facts about my children so they can look back (and I can re-live) cute and precious memories about them that I might otherwise forget. But the mother's diary is a new concept that i hadn't thought of - but yet makes so much sense! I always seem to reflect on things that either have concerned me about a child or a mental note that I hope to revisit and so a mother's diary sounds like a great solution for this. I can't say enough how much I am enjoying your videos. You speak in such a lovely way that it inspires me to be intentional in how I communicate with others.

    The mothers notebook reminds me of Jo’s notebook in Little Men. :) I have tried variations of this over the last few years. I think i need to simplify it. I tend to focus too much on details, perfectionist problems.

    How would you differentiate emotional vs mental observations in your mother’s diary? I’m working on mint and am separating the different areas within the notebook and am trying to decide which observations would go where. I’m thinking emotions would be more about how they’re processing emotions, what’s hard for them, etc. And mental would be more about learning, like what’s difficult for them, how are they enjoying current learning methods/routine, etc. I have a preschooler, so I’m not doing a logbook, so I’m thinking this mental section would be a very abbreviated logbook in that sense, but not sure if that’s what Mason meant by mental observations.

  • @thecommonplacehomeschool

    @thecommonplacehomeschool

    So Mason doesn't say all four of the categories that I use, but you're on the same mental track as I am. For the little ones, emotional may be notes about how they handle frustration, what their go-to's are for anger, sadness, happiness, etc. Mental could be growth in language, difficulty with new tasks or games, telling better jokes, etc.

    This might sound ridiculous, but would you be able to create a mock mothers diary entry to share? You could create a fake child…Bob…with fake traits 😂 I’m having trouble mentally piecing together what this may look like. I almost feel guilty as i contemplate things to write as i notice areas in need of growth in my daughter’s life. I’m unsure of to do this effectively without seeming like I’m negatively journaling about my child. Does this make sense? Do you have a similar sample in your patreon?

  • @thecommonplacehomeschool

    @thecommonplacehomeschool

    10 ай бұрын

    Not a ridiculous question at all! I alway keep in mind that my child *could* pick up this mother's diary by accident and start reading. I always want to be charitable in how I think and speak of them (even in my head!) so this is true in the diary too. Everyone does the diary a little bit differently-some recording paragraphs! But mine is pretty brief/almost bullet-style notes. An example, for an imaginary George. You'll see it reads pretty neutral and I always comment on a growth, even if it's small. (It encourages me too!) Mental: George is able to attend for about 5 minutes before he starts to taper off. He's beginning to order his chores on his own, deciding what needs to be done when. (Sometimes forgets a chore. Does better if he has a visual aid.) Physical: Coordination continues to grow/no longer tripping on trail roots. Violin lessons show some fine-motor skill work is needed in our practice time. Must be in a growth spurt! Eating and sleeping quite a bit! Emotional: Understands how others are feeling and acts for their benefit. (Seeks out the lonely child at the park. Offers his brother the best cookie.) Needs more vocabulary when upset to communicate with me. Spiritual: Asking questions about salvation, very interested in illustrating Bible stories. Reluctant to pray aloud lately but joins in family prayer physically.

    You need to read The Duties of Parents, Parenting your Children God's Way by J.C. Ryle or Come Ye Children by Charles H. Spurgeon. Because what u said "that the view christians have about breaking childrens will" is incorrect. Parents help guide children to Christ and the Bible says in Colossians 3:6 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

  • @thecommonplacehomeschool

    @thecommonplacehomeschool

    It's been a while since I recorded this one so I don't know the exact quote to which you referenced. However, whenever I mention "the will", I'm usually explaining that a parent's God-given duty is to help train a will toward what is good so the child will learn to walk the path of life in Christ. (So I think we agree?) I certainly agree with Col. 3 that one ought not to provoke their child, and I think the modern sense of "I must break a child's will until they obey me," teeters on provoking toward discouragement/anger. There is a difference in manipulating a child into "obedience" through fear, bribery, suggestions, influence, etc. and helping a child build the muscles and affections for the life God calls good.
