QUEEN ALERT: 15:02-15:38. Running w swarm near bottom of video. "Look at that" when she enters hive.
Got a swam from 26 feet up a few weeks ago... THAT was fun! Used a bucket on the end of a VERY LONG bamboo pole, standing on a ladder, trying to dislodge them. Luckily I got the queen and a few bees on the first try. Stuck the queen in a queen clip in the box. The rest of the bees were still 26 feet up and I banged the ball a few times to dislodge them and get them to come down. It still took the rest of the swarm over two hours to get in the box... but I got them in the end!!!
Have you ever had a queen fly away putting them in a hive this way?
One of the coolest things I've ever seen. Never get tired of that
Really wonderfull to watch that, cant watch you boys enough from here in uk
I love the march and how committed the bees are to their queen

K&L, thanks nothing like watching a March before Church on Sunday morning! Watching a March and standing in the middle of a swarm in flight is two of the coolest things about beekeeping! Thanks for the video!
Two things. First I had a swarm I caught twice before I losing them the third time when I was not home. Second, I approve of announcing to the world the shirt I have on is at least 6 years old. Some of mine go back even further!
That's a good thing to watch follow the leader just Like Sheep
Kamon, my man, if there weren't below-average-stature guys like you who were positive and awesome, you know what all short guys would be? Insecure douhebags with small-man syndrome. Tis dudes like you that prove that height doesn't matter, heart matters. Keep on being awesome.
These videos are really appreciated. I know they're time consuming and thank you greatly! Keep swinging' -)
Loved it.
How come you shake them outside of the hive, instead of inside of the hive? Watching them walk into the hive in person, is definitely awesome. 👌
Always good tips. Thanks
That one down vote is The beekeeper that lost the swarms!
Slogan for one of your T-shirts…”It’s Always Awesome!” 😁
Workers that end up just outside the nuc box after a shake join the new I've in the box, they won't go back to the mother hive. Plastic foundation encourages bees to draw burr (of centered) comb
I’m 6foot tall and would have dented the roof so be glad you got it and didn’t damage your roof lol. Thanks for the videos sir.
Lamont you rock! Best swarm video yet. Thanks from Idaho.
Watching them march into the box never gets old. I could do that all day long. 😃 Thanks for sharing! Love these videos! T-minus 6 days and counting until my new bees arrive!
I've not seen that sort of rehiving before. Cool stuff. What makes them just know, oh yeah, over here. Smell?
I love the march too thanks for the videos .
This is so amazing the way they follow their queen inside.
Thanks Kamon, really loved this video. You are the best!
Don’t worry about your size. Remember dynamite comes in small packages and it is not the size of the man in the fight but the size of the fight in the man! You are big teacher.
I feel better now that I see your bees have swarmed too, I sometimes feel bad when mine do because I’ve been told I’m not taking care of my bees well, this is hard to understand for me. Thanks for all you to so kindly.
Love it! Sharing.
love it!! very relaxing!!!
I love watching the march of the bees. There is something that is just so satisfying about it.
love seeing the RUN into the boxes. Amazing
Congratulation two swarm in one day👍👍👍I always love to watch swarm catching .. waiting for your next swarm catching
get yourself a 5 gallon bucket, drill some air holes in it and attach it to an extendable painters pole, it wont matter if your short mate.
hey I am short in stature (5'5") and I have a 20 year old (plus) Subaru too and dang-nabbit, people like you! Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience with us Kamon and Laurel.

Nice work Catching and releasing those swarms. Good to see ur hives are “mortal” and susceptible to swarming like mine 😃

I really don't want to have to catch my own swarms this year. I'm making splits in a few days and it's supposed to be raining until then 🤞. In Maryland we are still getting brood chilling so my colonies might not really be booming yet, but they do have adult drones, so.
I never get tired of watching bees march into a hive. If I put an empty baited hive body in my bee yard, is that a good strategy for catching my own swarms?
It just means that you are well grounded
But you are a GIANT among beekeepers.

I don't "want to get sent to the house!" LOL! Great information.
never gets old watching that march!!
Great job
A few swarm traps placed near apiaries used from cull equipment attracts absconding bee colonies.👍
First time beekeeper here. My first packages of bees won't arrive until later this month, around 26th, looking forward to learning more and keeping them safe. My wife is already looking into what flowers and trees we are going to plant in the beeyard.

Yessir!
Videos like this are really helpful, my first package of bees come in next week so this type of stuff will save me some headache down the road.
I’m just curious, why do they walk right into the hives ,like that since the queen is not inside the box.
That was freakin' awesome.
So fascinating! I’m surprised by two things; that the bees go into the box without a queen in it and that they even move away from the queen into the box. I thought you would have had to put the queen into the box first to get them to go into it. What makes them march towards the box? I’m a first year beekeeper. We just did our first split from a swarm we caught last spring. Thanks for your videos, never get tired of watching and learning about the bees!

Apparently it's the bees themselves that give off the signal pheromones to give the marching orders! This applies to swarming too. How one bee decides one day to start this signal which then begins copycat signalling from the others is anyone's guess?
You should get one of those telescoping boat hooks. They are only about $20 on amazon. I saw someone's channel where they used a wire mesh trash can on a pole to cash swarms. The mesh kept the swarm cool and did not block the pheromones.
Really interesting! Always something new to learn about bees!
Excellent video and those 2 bee marches are among some of the best i have seen, and mate let me tell you don't put yourself down to be a big man you only need a big heart i have seen a lot of big men in stature that had no heart height doesn't determine what sort of man you are but your heart does anyway mate cheers from Australia .
This was perfect timing. I had to catch one of my own swarms this afternoon!
A real beautiful thing to see
Love your videos, and don't worry - you're a big man in my eyes at least. I live in France, deep in the rural countryside and after a couple of years with empty hives, I just caught my first swarm - Yipee. I have my first bees. Now time to review all the old videos and see what to do next. Cheers, and thanks - big man
i use lemongrass essential oil in an extreeeeeeemly tiny amount smeared just inside the top of the new hive box. This imitates the pheromone of the queen. I’m really new at this but so far it works!
I watched this video first thing this morning, then went out to check my colonies. 5 minutes in I watched one of the swarm. I beat on a metal pot and they landed in a close by tree. I don't have another yard to put them but followed the rest of your tutilage. So far so good. Thanks for beeing there Kamon! Shared

@@cellobert I've seen where someone said it imitates thunder. When they hear or feel the vibrations it causes them to land. I personally have used it 4 times this year and had them land each time. There really is something to it and I'm a believer!
Pretty fun to watch the girls march into their new homes.
Do you add any attractor to any boxes for swarms to go in? Would you recommend adding lemongrass oil and if not, why?
Great information! Thanks!

Me too. A new swarm as well.
Nice video Kanon. I am wondering why you didn't catch that queen and paint mark it ? As you said a marked queen is easier to spot, Thks. (queen at door step 15:34)
Great video. Thanks
Kamon, what about trimming the queen’s wing so she cannot fly to keep the swarm.
I’ve never seen anything like this. I have shaken into the hive, this is beautiful. Did you put lemon grass oil inside the super or something to attract the bees to go into the super?
Kamon Reynolds have you heard of a queens throne? Blue Green Horizons has a website for the queens throne for reaching high swarms.
Have fun doing this when you are in your 30's! But at 65, this show ain't happening on top of a truck. I missed a small swarm Saturday in a willow tree at arm-length level. Got there a little too late, and the queen went from the swarm cluster to the air and I watched them with a tiny tear in my eye as she turned the corner around the lake. :(
I feel your pain. It's swarm time in SC as well!
Thanks !!
Did this exact same thing yesterday with two swarms. Same spot the two swarms were at just 8 hours apart. Thanks for teaching me about the scout bees will still make them swarm if they have made there mind up even if you put them in a nuc. Watch every video of yours in Central Texas!
Great video! I'm always preaching if a managed colony swarms you missed a management step, but sometimes we're trying to manage too many....
Question: Say you don't have the luxury of additional bee yard would you carefully cage the queen for 48 hours or so in hive with swarm?
6:03 R.I.P Kamon's Ego 🙏
Good catch! Awesome video. Great tips about using the nuc boxes and moving swarms to a new bee yard.
that was cool! i never saw that done on the ground , i seen a wild swarm do that on a side of our old barn though! thank you for the tips!
great job laurel ,,saw her goin in...
You mentioned thinner than 1:1 ratio feeding. What do you recommend? I just got 2 swarms from 1 place and a cut out within about 3 weeks. This ladies house is a bee magnet! Anyway, yeah I want them to get them building fast. Thanks for all of your informative videos.

If I am trying to draw combs and not trying to put on a lot of weight. I use 0.75 lbs of sugar to 1lb of water. Works great. 1:1 works nice also but can add more weight on than I like. Ratios can be tweaked thru the season depending on the colonies needs.
Did you add something in the hives, like lemon grass, that attracted those bees to enter?
Awesome video thanks for the info
Excellent
Where abouts in TN are you? I'm in Clarksville and I'm hoping my swarm box gets used this year.
I’m excited!!!! I just got done setting my first swarm trap of the year today , it’s my first using swarm commander ! Years ago I caught ferals with spearmint and lemon grass oil, it worked every year, at one time when I was younger we had 400 colonies and every single bee was caught, this was in harford county Maryland, most of my family is from Denton valley Tennessee and Bristol, which every summer in Bristol we would catch a couple swarms and take them back to harford , Maryland and keep the gene pool mixed up , we had great success years ago but there weren’t mites back then either and the bees were naturally hygienic back in the 70’s and didnt tolerate strangers in their brood boxes very well , I’m basically learning all over again after a 25 year break, but I never forgot my foundation for bee keeping , that’s a plus 😜

So if you don't have another bee yard 3 miles away to relocate them.... what steps do you take to ensure they stay around within your own bee yard?

LMAO at the liability disclaimer.
Very educational video. Appreciate it. Question: What exactly is drawing them into the box if the queen is with the swarm? PS: You are a giant among beekeepers!
@kamonreynolds
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Catherine! I think multiple things draw them in. First I threw a frame of larvae in there and they produce pheromones, the frame has beeswax, and propolis. Even without that they still go into the cavity as it is dark and much better than sitting on the ground exposed to the elements.
