Many Thanks for your various videos David. Make me feel you confident in handling my MAC. Appreciate the hard work that you put in through your videos.
Hey David, I restarted my Mac and then verified + controlled the disc. It didn't give me a lot more free space, but note the I regularly do a complete shut down, plus I'm taking care of my Mac, but it did give me like 1 GB more space - at the least. Also you're doing a great job!
Thanks Dave. I usually do this at least ones a month but always did in in my account. Makes a lot of sense to do it the way you did it.. Thanks again..
I'm waiting for my very first Mac to show up in the mail! Your channel has been a MASSIVE help! Thank you so much for the great, clear content you produce! I don't feel like I'm going into this adventure blind folded.
I really love love your videos, they are very helpful. Whenever i face any problem with my mac, i simply go to your channel and viola my problem is solved. Above all these there re so many videos and channel on youtube but i personally trust your videos and really feel satisfy after seeing your videos. Thank you so much..wonderful job!!!!
Hi again David, just wanted to thank you again for this video, cuz although clearing space wasnt my problem, i just went ahead with your guidance here and it solved my problem, my HD is now in one solid healty piece. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks David!! Looking forward to the next class
Thanks David you're the best, really you sure have a knack for explaining things so well
awesome adition "putting the time"...always awesome vids David!.
You are really great David, i am a mac user since 2009 but i still am learning some tips and trucs from you! Thank you so much for that!
Any tutorials produced by David A. Cox about computers are excellent. Highly recommended. He provides a lot of helpful tips that even a 900 pages manual wouldn't tell you.
Thanks for the Tips!
hi there, love your show, tutorial and so helpful. Take care and be healthy. :) Thank you.
Great video! Really help me thanks!
Cheers guys, I could'nt understand how i was using my hard drives capacity when i had transfered a lot of my pictures, video's etc on to a jump drive. well i have followed your instructions and i went from 8gb left out of 125gb to 10gb, then i carried on following your instructions, i then got it up to 14 gb. I then did a OS X restore and i haven't a clue why but i knew something was amiss and i now have over 61gb spare. rock on and thank you very much. Gary
Very good teaching make people know of the hard drive health
Thank you David.
Thanks! Awesome.
Thumbs up for the very useful tip!!!
I got back 10gb just by doing the first step, (verify disk/repair disk) yaa! Thanks for the tips David I really appreciate it, and I needed that 10gb badly, I have been erasing stuff, moving pictures to external hard drive and anything I could to get back some space on my Macbook Pro since I only have a 250gb SSD.
Hey David, I enjoy your classes and I admit they help me a lot especially to a new mac user. How do I back up to external hard drive which has different format? How to do partitions to make it work on both OS Windows and Mac? Thanks for classes.
Amazing thanks
Got about 12 GB back on my 2013 Retina MacBook Pro! Thanks, David!
Thanks a lot..
Good video. I was told at one time to go to that sight and run the "verify disk" but not starting as you suggested. While my computer (iMac) has lots of space and is 2 years old I am getting the beach ball effect. Possibly because my desktop is cluttered? Will try the fix and hope that I get some results. Love Pc Classes Online and have learned a lot and reminded of things I had forgotten.. thanks!!! Cynthia
You should try to keep the audio at the same level because I don't like turning up or down the volume several times. Besides that, you're great. This worked for me.
Thanks for all your information you share. Your knowledge is amazing. I heard you mention in an earlier video on IPhoto, about Mac coming out soon with the new Photo program. Any updates?
David ….great show…you are always helpful and present in a clear, easy to understand manner. Question….I’ve been holding off the Software Update red number 1 wanting me to upgrade to Yosemite….is this now a safe time to upgrade my iMac and my wife’s MacBook Air to the newest system or should we be waiting for one more version? thanks again larry
I was at 27 GB free to 39GB!! Thank you so much! i will definitely be subscribing!
Great Vid. Thank you!. I've only used 98gb so far :)
Hi! David, I am Jason,i would like to install Cisco packet tracer into the macbook pro, but was not successful, could you make a video on how to go about? And do you have a video about bootcamp, that i can install the packet tracer. Thank you so much. Best regards, Jason , Your tutorials are very help, thanks a million.
I love your videos. They're really helpful. Are your eyes really that color? They look really cool here
As usual, this is a very useful video, I've been a Mac user for several years now, and EVERy month I run several exams on mine. I run Disc Utility and some other apps... But this is my very first MacBook Air (2014 model) and I got to thinking: running all of this processes... do they affect an SSD differently? All other Mac's I own are HDD... Thank you.
This really helped alot! thank you

Hey David! Great video (and thanks for all the others). My question is in order to have mi Mac as optimized and healthy as i can, how much time between this ''verify/repair'' thing has to spend? Maybe once a month? And, do you have more videos for Mac maintenance and care? (I'm new in your channel) Thanks A LOOOT!!!
Hi,David.Thank you much .Great and very useful Video. BTW any opinion on Onyx as a a maintenance tool? Your input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Such a great trick for my MacBookPro, I recovered 6GB by doing this simple exercise... Great Video! Thanks David, keep up the good work.
My imac has a previous owner. If I Re-install OS, do I need previous owner apple Id? of the current one, which is my personal id, is enough? Thank you so much for such great videos..... by the way, YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE that I allow ads to run completely. This is my way of supporting your work. Blessings
Keep Your Mac's Hard Drive Healthy: I just followed your KZread class; before cleaning the disc I had 1.6 GB, after I cleaned my HD I now have 2.84! I need to remove a HUGE portion of photos from my HD because it's taking waaaay too much space - and some go back 8yrs LOL.... thanks David!
Thanx :)
Hi David!Very useful information as always!I have two questions.I have a mac mini and when I am editing on imovie and especially while I am doing voice over on a video, mac mini makes a noise and the bar of voice over turns into orange and then imovie shuts down.It happens only on voice over and I do not know why.If you have any suggestions or any clue why this happens please let me know.In order to try the first step what keys should I press because I have a microsoft keyboard and I do not have command.Thank you.
Hi, David. Thanks so much for sharing your information. I tried to do this step by step, but I'm using the Sierra OS and when booting back up, holding the command and R keys, clicking on Utilities, I didn't have the option of clicking on verify. Does having Sierra OS make a difference?
Thank you so much for your vdo's, when I took my MacBook Pro to Apple they said sorry to old no parts, so my question is where do I go to have my laptop hard-drive fixed ? Thank you and your vdo's have helped.

+Carlos Gonzales hi everyone ,if anyone else trying to find out best mac cleaner app try Niposcu Speedy Apple Adviser (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my m8 got cool success with it.
Started with 21. some GB and ended up with 25.20Gb. Thanks Mr. Cox!
Hello Mr. Cox, sir,. Greatly enjoying your classes - so professional! Now my particular problem, my iMac is 6 years old running Mojave 10.14.6 and I am increasingly getting the 'spinning ball of death' with programmes loading far too slowly. So I have tried to check the hard drive following your steps in this video. The 'far left' HD icon is labelled 'APPLE HDD ST1000...' and not 'Mackintosh HDD", and clicking on 'First Aid' I get the option to 'Run' rather than 'verify disc'. Anyway, it appears to check the disc in about half a second and comes up with 'OK' - however after 6 years I might have expected at least some things which needed attention as you suggest. Have I done something wrong ? Should I increase the internal RAM (currently 2 x 4Gb) to help the problem? Your comments would be much appreciated if possible - thanks
what if i still have the beach ball spinning after replacing my hdd in my imac to a ssd ? could some other component be failing? just spent 300 plus labor to have my hdd swapped to ssd hoping to solve the problem? it is a late. 2009 imac thanks for the help!
Amazing video, I am a little bit lost about HD failure in my IMAC. I have run Verify Disk While I was logged in and I got this message : "This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility." I did that and seems there isn't any issue on my HD, there's no repair to be made....So, Should I dismiss any error message obtained when we are logged in while I was logged in? (sorry for my basic skills in english) best
Thank you! Great Video! before I had only 12G free after got more than 60G! Thanks
Go Go Go David^^
Thanks!!! started with 74.97GB after watching 108.6GB..well done.
Is it still possible to do this method given that Apple has removed some features in disk utility such as verify?
Hi David, followed your advise step by step but when I got to the disk utility view, it shows that ‘Macintosh HD’ is not mounted. I couldn’t select the “outdented” Macintosh HD. Any advise for these kind of problems? Would really appreciate it. Thank you.
what do you think about external hard drives?
how do you record a video of your computer screen? What do you use? I notice it zooms in and out, can you explain how to do that?
I mean I didn't get the HD options and the verify key bottom right.
I have an Apple iMac and although I'm not very technically savvy have learned a lot from your classes and set up preferences and security as you have suggested. My system is running on OS X 10.9.2 and I keep being offered a FREE upgrade to OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 which is what you were showing on this tutorial. So far I have left well alone. I don't download books, tunes or use Facebook, twitter etc. but should I be using this?

From what I've seen it improves security and adds a new user interface that is similar to iOS 7/8. It adds in some new features too.
Hi David, I have a problem, I am having issues removing caches. the pop-up message states it's currently used and its eating up close to 10gb. how do I remove unwanted folders that cannot be deleted from the trash bin. thnk you
My macbook is from '09. OSX v.10.11.6(I know...!) I get beach balls everyday. When I got into the disc utility and clicked on my hd there is no button to verify. There are some buttons on top of the box: info, mount and first aid... Nit sure what to do next. Fortunately Ido have time machine running an ext. backup hd.
very helpful. I barely started to join the mac family. Too bad I'm from windows.
In El Capitan the disk utility can no longer do a verify, the button is missing. I can only run First Aid.
I bought my Macbook Pro about 14 months ago. I have more than half empty Storage but I get the Spinning Wheel a lot sometime. I work on Photoshop almost all the time when I use Macbook. Now I'm bit worried about the spinning wheel. Why I'm getting it more often? What should I do?
hello david.. if i click reinstall OS, are the apps i already install will automatically uninstall and have to install again or not?? thank you..
Does this apply to a Mac mini? P.S. Does this apply for a flash drive?
I have a imac, maybe 3 years old and running an old system. Could I just re install like here, and get the newest mac OS system? What about files and stuff on theca, do i loose them?
My macintosh hd got lost or lock i cant access it any more and know im stuck on the os x utilities. Please help
I just use a G-Drive and put anything that isn't a necessary application onto it. (Like media files and documents.) I also use a lot of cloud storage, so that limits my exposure to drive failures. My Macbook has an SSD, so I'm sure it will run well until it just flat-out dies. :( I have had a small Intel SSD die on me, so i know it's possible. I prefer the old mechanical drives still. There's a little more of a wait, but I've had some last more than a decade without failure.
I'd like to reinstall the OS, but wonder if I should adjust the Energy Saver so my hard drive doesn't sleep while running overnight? I'd think the display going to sleep wouldn't cause an issue….just the hard drive?
do i reinstall OS if the problem persist? ex. if my computer is slow??
I have never backed up my files & I have tons of photos on my iMac 4 yrs old (USB 2.0) Are there external drives you would recommend ? I see the bouncing color ball & need to clean my HD. At 80 yrs old how to proceed to back up prior to cleaning the HD? VN VET
if your HD is full, you cannot reinstall OS...what other options can we do? I have already moved my photos and songs to external HD
I noticed that your hard drive has 500 GB mine is 121 GB (MacBook Air). Do I need more GB and for what reason? By the way I saw your tutorial ''cleaning my mac''. I have 55% free space. Additionally, the key cmd+R doesn't work so to recover my hard disk I need to install sierra but is not permitted to buy in my country (Finland). Really strange?
0.71 though the process is is different on OS 10.14 - you don’t get to ‘verify’.
i just did it...when i hit reinstall...didnt show the restar option...so i click the apple logo on he menu bar and hit restar
David, i am deleting my local time machine backups with the terminal command Open up the Terminal App and type sudo tmutil disablelocal It will take a while for the system to delete the folder. It is renamed instantly to “.MobileBackups.trash” and consequently deleted. You will notice a slower Mac and the fans could start up. But after a few minutes everything should be back to normal.
I am assuming you can just reboot the Mac instead of a reinstall of the OS?
Hey David, I've got something similar but instead I have a blinking question mark inside a folder which goes on repeatedly...? Please Help!!!
***** hey david, i love you tutorials and and i'm relatively new mac user (6 months only) you help me to understand them better. I have a macbook air (2014 late) running on mavericks. i haven't updated it to Yosemite because of the rumours surrounding it ,ex. that it slows down it, battery backup decrease, Wi-Fi issue, popping of beach ball etc. so i want to know your opinion whether i should try it or not . thanks in advance.

These issues were only in beta version....and wifi issue has been fixed in 10.10.2. However, I did that on 10.10.1 following a nice guide on lifehacker.com
What happens if the AC power goes out when reinstalling os x?
I recovered 1.61 Gb. No bad, Thank you
Will this make your Mac run a little faster?
David, If I split the hard drive in to 2 partitions (one for OS X and one for Bootcamp), do I need to keep 20% free space for each?

I've been researching into Mac speed ups and discovered an awesome website at Mels Speed Method (check it out on google)
I wonder is there is a way to delete messages as a group instead of having to do each one at a time?I know you can do that with emails, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do it with messages.
When you reinstall the operating system, what happens to all your stuff? Emails, documents, pictures, etc? Does that all have to be reinstalled from a backup??
@beljuhaus3778

tjk6277 No, all of your files and settings will keep intact. But I highly recommend backing up your data before doing this, you never know what will happen until it happens.
Can you also just do these clean your disk without rebooting the computer?
I recently bought mac pro m1 Recently i download netnbox browser and now when ever i open safari it will bumps up spining beach ball u mean it due to hardwares failure??
Wow i got 4.9gb back thanks it took me 58min to reinstall, my internet is fast, i just gladly click sub
I thought by reinstalling the OS that deletes everything? Are you saying doing this does not delete my apps an documents?
I was getting that beach ball a lot and I took my iMac into Apple and they kept it for two days to test it and said they couldn't reproduce that problem, LOL
People dont forget to plug your Mac to the outlet, its very important
I don't get the spinning beach ball all the time but it does appear from time to time and only for a few seconds mostly....Is this cause for concern? The PC isn't even a year old
My Mac Pro hard drive is healthy - as 437.63 GB available of 500.07 GB ... I follow every way to make my Mac cleaned! But, still, every times I open a pdf. file ... there goes a wheel of death! Please HELP!
i shutdown my macbook pro every night, is that bad or?
Is this info very dated and could it not be changed to new OS's ?
Thanks for the Video! My results: Before 162,92GB of free space Now 164,06GB of free space Not that great of results but I have my mac for about 2 months now so my hard drive was clean.
I did all that and I still have the same totals so I guess I'm good! I have 551.6 GB free :)
Before: 746.87GB free 999.35GB. After: 748.51GB free. 1.64GB difference, all in the "Other" category. Well that's something, so thanks, David!
I Started with 478.5 GB of 499.25 GB. Showed no apps something wrong?
Hello. Long time viewer first time commenting. I have a Common problem i think, my Macbook pro late 2011 internal speakers are not working anymore. I search google about this problem and tryed everything there is. Non off them worked. they work when i start the computer but after that nothing. In the system pref, there is no option to choose sound source as internal speaker. Do you have a solution to this problem? BR -karri-

i had bad speakers muffled sound and it turned out to need cleaning cat hair all over the interior and sand from Sunny Florida! Helped significantly and now I do that myself when it sounds to need it.
