Keen Pyrenees Review by Wildcraft Britain

Спорт

The Keen Pyrenees was new for 2020. It has the Targhee 2 sole and therefore the great wide fit and square toe box. In the UK we tend towards broad feet and for those with broad toes as well, the Pyrenees could provide a great fit where others have struggled.
Nubuck upper with a Keen Dry membrane to back it up, it provides excellent weather protection for those wet days that make Britain a green and pleasant land.
A great boot for easy trails, it will also serve well in harder hikes due to its increased ankle support, (over the Targhee).

    Excellent vid. I have a pair of Zamberlan Tofane and they've been a horror. Excellent fit in the shop but a few hours of wear and they were pinching as the fit was too narrow; the rubber toe rand peeled away and caused holes in the 3mm thick leather after 6 months; the soles wore away like they were made of butter (3 re-soles in 2 years). The mid-soles were meant to support crampons but they just disintegrated within 3 months and if you were ever up a mountain wearing these boots and crampons you'd have fallen to your death. These Keens look like a decent alternative, and a third of the price.

    Thanks 😊 that’s kind of you to comment ☺️ very surprised about Zamberlan- we have sold them at the shop and they where excellent- (I have a pair and they have proven very durable)- these would be no good for crampons though 👍🏻 Enjoy your outdoors time, Andy 🏔🏕🌀

    I own em and love em. Expensive? Yes. They look great though. I bought a size bigger for thick wool socks. Tested down to about 15 degrees f. Warm and toasty. My only complaint is there a bit heavy. Expected with the leather and toe box though.

    Hi, glad you enjoy my vids 👍🏻☺️ they are a full grain leather, so anything rated for gore-tex should be fine, (not that that are gore but the principles are the same)- I’m not sure what the official recommendation is, but if you don’t nourish the leather it will dry and crack prematurely 🤔 it will darken the leather but should not change the finish in any radical manner ☺️ enjoy your outdoors time, Andy 🏔🏕🌀

    Hi Anthony- glad you found the video useful ☺️ I would put on any leather care cream, (so with a leather conditioner in, not just a proofer), that was rated ok fit gore-tex (they don’t have goretex but the requirements are the same)- such as Scarpa HS12 cream or nikwax cream for leather. It will keep them going longer and help keep the leather highly water repellent 👍🏻 enjoy your outdoors time, Andy 🌀

    Hi Kalvin, glad you liked the vid ☺️ it’s a piece of string question really as there are many variables, from the terrain you are accessing to your level of fitness (and how you have attained that fitness)- it should be ok for easy terrain and the addition of walking poles would help 🤔 20kg is a heavy pack, so perhaps something with more under foot support would help if in uneven rocky terrain, but on easy trails they may be fine 😊 enjoy your outdoors time Andy 🏕🏔🌀

    How is the arch support in these? Comparing them to the targhees, are they about the same for arch support /insole? Thanks for the great review.

  • @WildcraftBritain

    @WildcraftBritain

    3 жыл бұрын

    I would say the arch support is basically the same- as far as I know the sole unit is the same as the targhee ☺️ Its not great in either, its there, but its not like the Oboz Bridger, which has a mid level arch support for example 🤔 the issue is whether you need mid level support to not- so the Targhee leaves it open and you can add your own if needed 😉 Glad you found the review helpful- enjoy your outdoors time, Andy ⛰🏕

    Hi, I am planning to buy these, but I am concerned as they have the same sole as the targhees. I have targhee 2, very comfy boots, but slippery on wet stones and dump leaves as hell, especially during fall. How does pyrenees perform?

  • @WildcraftBritain

    @WildcraftBritain

    Tbh, there should be no difference as they are basically the same sole- more ankle support, which does effect grip by increasing foot stability but I can’t see it making that much difference 🤔 never found a boot that deals with those too well anyway ☺️ enjoy your outdoors time Andy ⛰👍🏻🌀

    Oh, for sure, there are better grips for harsher terrain ⛰☺️ these are still designed for easy trails- the heal break and tread are more trail than mountain ⛰ but still, wet leaves slide against themselves and it all depends on the rock, green wet rock tends to be skippy what ever 😊 it’s the width and toe shape that almost makes them unique 🤔

    It’s an often asked question, how things will perform at a given temperature range ☺️ I suspect sometimes we just want to believe there’s one item to cover all eventualities 🤔 but in a four season environment with big temp swings a product that’s good in summer will be too cold in winter, or at least potentially, (things like bass layers can be bridged across seasons but even here season specific tend to be better and for example a heavyweight base layer for winter will be no good in the warmth of Midsomer), and I think where boots are concerned this is very much the case- it sounds excessive but I have eight pairs of boots alone for various jobs in various seasons, but I have been accessing the great Outdoors for over 30 years and some of those are quite old now as they only come out at certain circumstances that are reasonably rare but by when they occur prove valuable- I would say in general they will be too hot over 20° especially in humid conditions ☺️ but again it’s, as with most things, more complex than that as much depends on what else you are wearing and where footwear is concerned your sock is so important to control, as is fit of the boot🥾 these are wide with a wide heel and suit people with basically high volume large feet- ultimately I would class them as a autumn winter boot that can be used in the warmer seasons on wet and cold days 🌦️ hope this helps and enjoy your Outdoors time 🌤️☀️⛺️🍂🏔️🌀

    In my experience, not really ☺️ while very wide, they are not long for the size- it does vary, but many people are used to sizing up with other makes to get the width, so it’s hard to say for sure- but they are not generous length ways 👍🏻 Enjoy your outdoors time, Andy ⛰ 🏕 🌀

    Good question 🙋‍♀️ lots of depends here- terrain been the main one 🤔 I would say, from the keens we have stocked, it would be the best they produce, (but there may be others, as they have a large range)- the added ankle support would help, but I would say for rough ground, say mountain use, they may be a little soft, but much depends on your personal fitness- a good friend, (who is an ultra runner), backpacked with me across some narly hills in Scotland a few years ago and he wore trail running shoes 😳😋 enjoy your outdoors time Andy 🏕🗺🏔🙌🏻🌀

  • @WildcraftBritain

    I would say not very well, compared to a stiffer soled, more aggressive grip heavier mountain boot- but they should do OK for a lighter easy trail boot- the leather should help keep moisture out to 👍🏻 Enjoy your outdoors time, Andy 🏕⛰

    @@mihaela255 hi, all boots are slippery on snow. The more aggressive the sole unit and critically the stiffer the boot the better. If you are thinking of a boot for snow and heading into the mountains you need to be looking at a boot that will take crampons and get the appropriate training. If your just walking very low paths you can get away with some lightweight snow grips.

    Sorry didn't watch it all. KEEN Men's Circadia Mid Waterproof Boot Bison Brindle and Men's Ridge Flex Waterproof Bison Golden Browna are best fitting shoes/boots I have owned ; but the soles are totally bloody useless! The soles just don't last . Only use them for a few hours day at most , and not everyday --- I'm 70 and retired so basically walking the dog in the Australian Outback bush --- no stones or rocks . Have worn out to two pairs of shoes and the boots have lost most grip . All in a couple of years! It's seems near impossible to buy similar and so sensible broad footwear --- would love to hear about any you know of Cheers

    Yes, the fit is not unique but almost so ☺️ they have a very wide area a square toe box and the wide heel 🤔 this is a fairly rare last type but there are other manufacturers that produce wider fitting boots- but I can’t think of any that are wider than these ones ☺️ however sole unit degradation was always a topic in the shop and it tended to be dog walkers that found issue- there is much to unpick here and I could write a small essay on sole unit construction, well actually quite a large one 😂 Tough hard, low rubber content sole units with stiff lasts tend to last longer but are less comfortable and tend to be heavier- these are lightweight softer easy walking types of footwear and with regular use will never last as long as we would like, in my experience anyway ☺️ one thing you could do is a little bit of maths to work out how many miles you’re doing in them, regular dog walks can add up to a surprisingly large amount of mileage 🐶😄 it’s a bit like car tyres, the type of compound they are made of will tend to dictate how long they last and also the type of tread they have, softer off-road tires will tend to degrade much faster than harder summer rated road tyres, and it’s very similar without our footwear 😉 they are also at the cheaper end of the premium market, but that said, in a similar type of boot, I don’t think you’d see much more mileage out of paying more 😉 in addition, I suspect you walk far longer distances over the months then you realise ☺️ which is a great thing wonderful for your mental health and absolutely key for your physical health 👍🏻 Hope this helps, great to hear you’re getting out there and enjoying your local environment! 🤗☀️🌀
