On my way to my school in Istanbul, I see a white-orange cat every day. And before I walk pass him, I pet him and check if he has enough food and water (we built a cathouse and food pots for cats around our school, I brought cat food in my bag incase he doesn't have enough). So, one day I was walking to my school like usual, then I saw my cat (we got pretty close over weeks, I even named him Osman). I saw that Osman was looking ill. So I dropped my bag and tried to find what's wrong. While I was doing that a girl from my school (I haven't seen her before), came close and asked "Omg what's wrong with him?" She was very pretty and nice btw. I stuttered and said "I think he's not well.", she also dropped her bag and sit beside me immediately, she also tried to figure out what's wrong with him. I told her that I checked his food and water they look fine, I think he got infected or something. She agreed.I said " I'm gonna take him to the vet." and she suddenly replied "I'm coming with you." I said" it's fine you don't have to miss your class, I can take care of him." She replied I can't pay attention to the teacher anyway while he's still ill like this. So we went to vet and we chatted a little on the way. I got her name, class, etc. And when we get to the vet, vet started examining him. He asked his name. At the same time I said "Osman!", and she said "Latte!". We all laughed and vet said I liked Latte better soo I'll call him that. Anyway vet did his syringes and gave him meds. He said he will be fine in couple of hours. We paid his fee together and left. We dropped Osman to his place and stood beside him and chatted a bit. I finally gathered my courage and said, So now that we both missed our classes, would you like to eat with me? and she said yes! I took her to my favourite Döner place and that's how I met my love... Thanks to Osman/Latte...

It looks Istanbul is an ideal city for cats. And yes it's really nice that majority of the residents are taking care of them. @Kaidona I think the only reason why indoor cats is a thing in your neighborhood is because well, not ALL residents in your place is fond of cats. It's like in the place I live in, there are some people who like to kill cats for their own amusement.

I have many cats and I never " trap them to pet them," they are free to come and go as they please but they always love to be around the house as much as outside home is comfort security, protection and very special bond with your very own humans .Outside is fun time but permanent home (freedom included )is security appreciated by cats as by humans.I would not like to be a homeless even if I am fed and peted daily.MEAWOOOOO from my cats all snuggled nicely for the night Tomorrow is another lovely day for gardening ,roaming ,chasing the birds, and making sure that humans are ok and at home ready to feed them ,stroke them or just relax with them. Still it is lovely that those cats are taken care of but I really think that neutering will help .Only my humble opinion.

I spent three months in Istanbul in a very hot summer in 2018. I loved it: it's my favourite city in the world. Everywhere you went there were cats, little cat houses, food and water out. I saw hundreds of cats, it was really lovely. Thing was, the streets didn't smell and there was barely any cat poo anywhere, and, no cat urine smell - in summer, a very hot summer. It is truly something.

@@javanycticebus There is an animal shelter in my school garden. We feed 10-12 cats, 2 dogs with 4 puppies and nearly 6 chickens. Also there's a sheep we called 'Mıcır'. Our school helps us to take care of them. We donate money, buy foods and toys for them. Our principal loves them too! Sometimes, during spring or fall, he came school with his dog Şila. We take our classes with cats in winter. Our school library has a place for cats too, to be honest.

Not actually only cats. We care of dogs, birds, hedgehogs, squirrels, lets say all animals.. I can make a quick summary of why we care of animals too much. Mercy. Which feeds itself from our roots. In Turkish roots, even before religion of islam, horses, wolves and dogs were the best friend of the Turks. They hunted together, protected and carried each other. They lived together, fought together and died together, bond grew and tied strongly with in the hearts of our roots. Eventually, this created the idea of respect to the nature and protect its living life which turns into mercy at the present time. I am not saying that we are perfectly doing it but at least we try to do our best. And definitly cats get the best benefits.

Same in Malaysia, the concept of "pet" cats is actually a new concept. In the olden days cats (and also "regular" chicken, as in not the pretty breed chicken like the Serama) come and go. Whichever that lingers and become a regular, that's what we consider "pet" (read: household member), but in the same time they're free to roam and leave. We'll miss them, but we accept the fact that we don't own them.

Can confirm. I grew up in one of the densest neighborhoods of Istanbul, called Cihangir, known for its abundance of cats. Too many households on a very small surface area. The first time I saw mice or rats either on street or in houses was when I moved to the US at the age of 18. Same with roaches. Still baffles me to this day how the major US cities have these pest problems when its extremely rare in a city like Istanbul where 20 million people are densely packed to deal with a current mice or roach problem.

For the people who are curious about well-being of the stray cats, they are pretty much in good condition. Cats are domesticated in Fertile Crescent, which is partly in Turkey, almost 10.000 years ago. Thus, people are used to seeing cats in everywhere throughout countless civilizations. Consequently, Turkish people are quite considerate in terms of stray cats. For instance, in the district of Besiktas, people leave Royal Canin cat food on the streets. People including my mother buy extra chicken parts to boil and give it to strays everyday. Municipalities have vets constantly checking stray animals (fixing them, curing for fleas, parasites, injuries and so on), which is completely free. When it is possible to hail, people make sturdy cat houses and leave on streets just in case. Taking care of stray animals is considered as an unofficial common duty among Turkish people; so, the stray animals are more human-oriented and affectionate in here.

Without cats, İstanbul would loose its soul. They are everywhere. When you eat something at the restaurant, when you make barbecue in the garden ..they will be very close and waiting for their share.

I go to a high school in İstanbul. we have a couple cats and they literally take classes with us, wandering around the library while we study. they're so cute and everybody loves them. I'm looking forward to graduating with them :)

What beautiful souls live in Istanbul and what a sweet approach to what many people would consider to be a problem. If they all love and care for so many cats...they have loving hearts.

Here’s some of my favorite cat stories as a local: - my mom is a teacher and her school had a cat who liked to walk in and out of classrooms, sleep at teacher’s desks and listen to lectures. One year they gave her a “honorary cat school diploma” and she attended the graduation ceremony. - we lived in a basement apartment when I was little. We used to keep the windows open in the summer so naturally it was common for me to just walk into my bedroom and find a strange cat sleeping in my bed. - each subway/ferry station have their own cats. If you frequent the Istanbul public transportation you will get to know them pretty soon. - we have celebrity cats as mentioned in the video. One of them even has a statue dedicated to him. and lastly, it’s not just cats! We take care of our dogs, birds and squirrels too :)

In my 22 year life time, I met so many cats and dogs. To make their memory forever I want to thank; Poseidon, Ares, İsis, Boncuk, Hestia, Turşu, İri göz, Tükürük, Gollum, Apollon, Bay Miyav, Katarakt, Anne, Isırık, Korsan, Tükürük, Morpheus, Gofret, Sarı, Minerva, Sfenks, Lila, Fındık, Fıstık, Benekli, Kuyruksuz, Hades, Badem, Leblebi, Lime, Karakız, Ceviz, Aşil, Tarot, Ginger, and other cats/dogs and birds I met because they made my life more enjoyable and better. And lastly my dog Püskül for keeping an eye on me for 13 years. And I just wanted to say I am against romanticizing cats/dogs being stray. You only see the cats who live around good neighborhoods. This is not the whole of İstanbul. I live in a pretty elite neighborhood but I see a lot of people who don't want cats/dogs around them and throwing our cat/dog food plates/houses. We want animal rights. We want it now. If you kill one of these beauties it's not a crime for our government, it's totally fine. They see our pets as our property. Not as a family member as we see. They see stray animals as nothing even. Not like we see them as our neighborhoods' souls. Our government keeps promising there will be animal laws. But where are they? It's been years! If you want to do something that will help you only, it takes one day to make the law so why it is taking so long? We only want fair punishments for killing or hurting animals. My dog was my brother. My dog has no difference from your human brother in my eyes, so I want fair punishment. I thought some serious things should be talked about here too. It's not all black and white.

I've been very blessed having had the opportunity in Aug 1990 to visit Paris, Rome, Amsterdam - Netherlands, Oslo - Norway, Copenhagen - Denmark, Munich - Germany, and Salzberg - Austria. But Unfortunately I have yet to have the privilege of visiting Istanbul. I want to go for the interesting convergence of eastern "Muslim" and western "Christian" cultures, and of course the Cats. I hope to go some day soon. Thank you.

İts great to see this vid. Coz it gets easier to tell people,to tell that animals in İstanbul and in turkey are living beside us since centuries. We have bird homes on mosque walls,we have Cat homes,we walk with dogs on the streets every day. And mostly, our life style orders us to respect and love animals. Tx 4 the vid.
