The studio version of “Is It Any Wonder?” features synthesized guitar melodies and has been remixed for dance clubs by DJ Tall Paul. As the English piano rock group performs it here, sans synthesizer, the song takes on a more melancholy and reflective tone appropriate to the subject matter. Lyrically, “Is It Any Wonder?” is pianist Tim Rice-Oxley’s response to the Iraq war and to the unsettled, overwhelmed sentiments it has planted in his generation.
Tom Chaplin sings the song regretfully, acknowledging that things are not the way they should be without claiming to have the right answers, himself. Yet the song is not without hope. It is a plea: maybe there IS some kind of Superman out there who knows what’s right, and if there is, could he please swoop in and save us?
