Lyrics below:
Why do I have to fly
Over every town up and down the line?
I′ll die in the clouds above
And you, that I defend, I do not love
I wake up, it's a bad dream
No one on my side
I was fighting
But I just feel too tired to be fighting
Guess I′m not the fighting kind
Where will I meet my fate?
Baby, I'm a man, I was born to hate
And when will I meet my end?
In a better time you could be my friend
I wake up, it's a bad dream
No one on my side
I was fighting
But I just feel too tired to be fighting
Guess I′m not the fighting kind
Wouldn′t mind it
If you were by my side
But you're long gone
Yeah, you′re long gone now
Yeah
Where do we go?
I don't even know
My strange old face
And I′m thinking about those days
And I'm thinking about those days
I wake up, it′s a bad dream
No one on my side
I was fighting
But I just feel too tired to be fighting
Guess I'm not the fighting kind
Wouldn't mind it
If you were by my side?
But you′re long gone
Yeah, you′re long gone now
Yeah

Hi Marian,I've suffered depression for 15 years .You never alone love ,I hope you pull througb
When I was 17, one day I came home and saw my dad crying. He told us that he has been addicted to alcohol and he sold our house due to financial problems because of the addiction. I had to leave most of my things there and so all my childhood memories. My parents divorced and my brother had serious problems with depressions and alcohol addiction, too. Today, I am 10 years older and still remember that when it was the worst, I used to listen to "A bad dream" hoping, that is is just a bad dream.

Wow ! Thanks for sharing this privacy. As a former french prime minister said, "Good things make times to come". We all have our bad experiences of life and familie's struggles, which become with time bad dreams. 15 years ago, I was working with shifted hours and didn't have possibility to change easily of work, missing my children growing. Thanks to my wife and to the Creator, I succeded to change the situation and rebalance our family's life. In this period, I was listening to this album. This song was one of my favorite...
Before a concert, Tom explained what this song means. It's about a soldier going to war. In fact, a lot of the album is about disillusionment with the ways of the world and all the current events (war, etc.) But I love how the lyrics are vague so most people end up spinning it to be about failed relationships and other sad themes....let's break it down and it'll all make sense. Why do I have to fly? (GOING TO WAR) Over every town up and down the line? I'll die in the clouds above And you that I defend, I had do not love (NOT NECESSARILY CARING ABOUT THOSE YOU'RE FIGHTING FOR, MOST ARE STRANGERS ANYWAY) I wake up, it's a bad dream No one on my side (IT'S WAR) I was fighting But I just feel too tired To be fighting Guess I'm not the fighting kind Where will I meet my fate? (FEAR DEATH) Baby I'm a man, I was born to hate And when will I meet my end? In a better time you could be my friend (ABOUT THE ENEMY, HE DOESN'T REALLY "HATE" HIM BUT IT'S WAR SO YOU HAVE TO KILL; IN ANY OTHER CIRCUMSTANCE THE ENEMY COULD HAVE BEEN SOME PERSON YOU BEFRIENDED) Where do we go? (POINTLESSNESS OF WAR) I don't even know My strange old face (FIGHTING AND TIME HAS AGED THIS SOLDIER) And I'm thinking about those days (BEFORE HE HAD TO FIGHT, BEFORE HE WENT TO WAR, FRIENDS, FAMILIES, ETC) And I'm thinking about those days

Tom Ryder That reads a little odd, but I actually get it. I had some built up problems in the past with people who refused to treat me like a person, but we had mutual friends and they just didn't want to pick sides and wouldn't acknowledge the other person truly being a jerk. So yeah, started feeling a lot of pent up anger. Then one day someone responded to a status and told me that anger was a normal and necessary emotion like the rest and it wasn't fair that people would try to deny my feeling it in a piss poor attempt at non-confrontation, that it wasn't healthy to only feel or at least present the "good" emotions, especially if circumstances didn't make them appropriate/natural to feel. Sad that I'm not even that close to the person who said that, but it was one of those forever helpful moments. It's not fair if you're being hurt or disrespected to not express anger at that and to always brush it off. Some people, it seems more so these days, do not see that as being the bigger person, only someone they can continue to direct their negativity at without consequences.

Concuerdo contigo!!! Hace unos años, me sentia perdido. Y ahora.... Nunca me habia sentido tan vivo. Tan inspirado a mejorar y a vivir. Este tema me recuerda mucho a ese yo de antes. Y claro, ahora todo eso es solo un recuerdo. Un mal recuerdo. Un mal sueño.

This is lyrically one of the greatest songs ever written. By all acounts it was written to depict the thoughts and emotions of a soldier that's been sent out to war. But you can interpret these words anyway you want. Could be a loved one that has passed away, maybe you had a turbulent relationship with them when they were alive or maybe you didn't. Could be a partner that you have separated from and this is describing the pain that you are feeling. And I'm sure there are plethora of other scenarios that could be related to this song, and that is the genius of it !!!

Those who know Keane must be very special people
I can't get over this videoclip. As soon as he gets out of the darkness and reaches the light, darkness peaks again. It's like a cicle. You'll have to keep looking for light, hopefully you'll not get tired, every time you reach it, there will always be darkness to face again, so you can look for light and face another darkness and on and on.
Man, this song really helped me a lot during some low times... When no one cares, no one understands, it helps to have music like this that makes you feel not alone.
I wonder if anyone could feel what I feel when I listen to them...this kind of feeling is only produced by music of this level. They are awesome.

+Montse Ma I think I feel what you feel. No one else that I know feels that connection. It is hard to describe. I have seen them four times all over the U.S. They were a great band and who actually said something in their lyrics. Miss them.

Literally. They other day, I'm there listening to Keane, pressing the button to turn up the volume, but it was already up all the way. I'm still in denial though. There was absolutely no way that that was the loudest it could go.

The genius of this song is that it can be interpreted many different ways. Songwriting like this just doesn't happen as often as it should.
It still feels like a bad dream after my mother died in January from cancer. Each day I wake up and like to imagine that's all it was. This song helps though. Keane are a special band.

This hits me to the core. The sound of this song explains every feeling of loss I've experienced as a human being. It's tragically beautifully and heartbreaking...I cannot stop listening
Tom and his long hair, cherub face glory days! ❤
Some years ago I was on a travel on bus, during it, was listening some music and spending time with my inner toughts, watching throught the window, remembering the past, coping with the present and wondering what the future holds. Then this song started playing and it felt special, it was special moment I cant explain it well, but made that mundane moment on the road to mean something more profound even if it was for just a few minutes, noticed time passing (years) and was grateful for been alive. Im Still.
this song is beautiful, masterpiece

The lyrics are based on "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death", a poem by Irish poet William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), written in 1918 and first published in the Macmillan edition of The Wild Swans at Coole in 1919. The poem is a soliloquy given by an aviator in the First World War in which the narrator describes the circumstances surrounding his imminent death. The poem is a work that discusses the role of Irish soldiers fighting for the United Kingdom during a time when they were trying to establish independence for Ireland. Wishing to show restraint from publishing political poems during the height of the war, Yeats withheld publication of the poem until after the conflict had ended. An Irish Airman Foresees His Death I know that I shall meet my fate Somewhere among the clouds above; Those that I fight I do not hate Those that I guard I do not love; My country is Kiltartan Cross, My countrymen Kiltartan’s poor, No likely end could bring them loss Or leave them happier than before. Nor law, nor duty bade me fight, Nor public men, nor cheering crowds, A lonely impulse of delight Drove to this tumult in the clouds; I balanced all, brought all to mind, The years to come seemed waste of breath, A waste of breath the years behind In balance with this life, this death.
11 years and still chills to my spine.. Please create more songs
I'd first listened this song couple years ago watching Scrubs. Never known about this group and never listened again since. I discovered it 2 days ago and went to this one song in my earphones while being in a bus travelling some towns and obviously roads, watching by the window. That was a blast in my mind and heart. Man that one hit hard when you go through something really bad for yourself.

R.i.P. Laverne watched Scrubs years ago, too. still remember the scene as it was yesterday. great songs just stuck in my head with everything that came along with them... or it's the other way around... great scenes stuck in my mind with also the music that was playing at that moment.
this is not a song this is not music it's a story it's a tragedy
A masterpiece of music played by proper artists and very talented trained musicians thank you Keane for keeping real music alive :-)
The O.C Ep 1/ Season 4
My neighbors just played this song and i searched for it, this is art
One of their best song
The whole song is a work of art, but the 15-second introductory piece at the start is truly soul-stirring. Thing is though, what is that sort of chirping sound going on in the background of that bit? Seriously, if you turn up your volume and listen carefully, ideally through decent headphones, you can hear something that sounds like either some kind of bird or a woodwind instrument. Someone tell me what is making that sound because for me it defines the piece as the finest easy-listening to bless the ears of humankind.

I had already noticed this sound too, it's the sound that only plays on the left side until 0:39. I think it is just a synthesizer.
@Reicy21

The piano and the synthesizer makes a really good background, all note of piano is extended, the finish is for example if you plays normally: tum, tum, tum, the finish as the same, but in this song sounds: tum, tum, tummmmmmmmmm. the last part, this mmmmmmmmmmm, make an effect incredible when is mixed with the synthesizer.

If you watch the live version of this song from the O2 show in 2007, Neil Hannon reads out the poem this song is based on before it is played, and the sound you mentioned is being played in the background.. It's available on here if you search, really haunting sound
never stopped listening Keane
Beautful voice Keane❤❤❤❤
Phenomenal tune .. absolutely phenomenal . Once in a lifetime song
I love Tom singing from the most danceable, peaceful, romantic songs to the darkest and most reflective. In addition to her beautiful voice, the song's lyrics and melody bring emotion!
Me encanta esta canción siempre veo el video y me da a entender que uno sale de su momento de oscuridad un momento ,ve la luz y prefiere regresar a sufrir pero me hace entender que no es el fin de todo uno regresa para arreglar todo de raíz
A message to the future generations Don't let this song die 💖🤧
