I am very blessed to live in Maui, in Makawao, right next Pi'iholo, where Keali'i Reichel lives. I always go see him when he plays at the MAC. This time I even went twice, one day after the other. He is definitely one of my VERY favorite singers and Kumu (Hula teacher). Nothing more beautiful than Hula!!! The most beautiful expression of kindness, grace, wisdom and respect. Aloha!

I discovered Keali'i' when he first started performing. Over the last 25 years I have thoroughly enjoyed not just his music, but also his enduring love of and stewardship of the culture and traditions of the Hawaiian nation. I, too, would have liked to experience the chant in solidarity with those on Mauna Kea.

That was the most awesome hour or so that I've had the pleasure of listening to an incredible Kumu Hula and singer, wonderful musicians and beautiful dancers. I truly miss Maui. I'm angry that the end of the program was silenced...why?!! I stood on the shore next to the Hale Koa when I was a little boy, maybe six, and I looked across the waters at Diamond Head. I knew then I wanted to return to Hawaii one day to climb that mountain. In 1991, my dream came true but I was so disappointed at what I saw...the high rises, concrete, traffic and more. The desecration of Hawaiian lands. I wasn't born a Hawaiian but my heart and my soul felt such instant love for this beautiful aina and the kama'aina.

The only problem that this video had was that someone due to whoever recorded this video accidently muted the volume to the Ku Kia'i Mauna chant and didn't realize it and i couldn't hear a damn thing and i wanted to hear it SOooo freakin bad!!! I'm SO disappointed! Hopefully someone will fix it soon so that we will be able to hear it this time!

Keali'i's music and dancers soothed my homesick soul. Mahalo nui 🙏🏼🌺 Thank you Kennedy Center for making this available. A few suggestions: if you say you are celebrating First Nations cultures, then you must fully demonstrate it. Before the show, speak with and get to know the performers, and practice saying their names with them. Second, do not make edits to any performance. Indigenous viewers are very sensitive to this because we have a long history of being silenced and dismissed. Because of what you chose to edit, viewers are left to assume that this was a political move from The Kennedy Center. If that is true, then I would question your sincerity in hosting this festival. Yes, Mauna Kea is political and controversial, but so is the entire colonial history of First Nations. The promotion of our culture comes with the promotion of our story, which includes political action. It cannot be another way. It is what makes us who we are. It is what colonialism made of us. If you are honest in your promotion of First Nations, take care not to make the same mistakes our oppressors did. Honor us and our story. Allowing someone to share their story is not an endorsement of their political actions. It is democracy. It is decency. It is respect.

What I love most about Hawaii is the love and respect for the Aina, the traditions, the history, and the preservation of the culture and heritage. ❤ The sound went out at 59:19... I would LOVE to have heard it, and I respect that it was a chant, and meant for only the audience present to hear.

🤬🤬🤬 The Native Hawaiians have the right to protest in support of their land! Whomever would censor should be ashamed.

I can't believe you muted the audio for the last piece! Very disrespectful and disappointing - KU KIA"I MAUNA!

KR is a cool cat. I use to work at HNL airport back in the mid-90's on his way up to stardom. He and his halau would fly out from inter Island terminal and he always had time to talk. The late Braddah IZ was also nice. He signed my uku when we had to screen him in the AOA before fork lifting him up on Aloha Air. Aloha aku makou, kakou. The late Uncle Willie K, was rude AF and always portrayed a bad boy image wearing slippers, but later on became less and less rude over the year's and easier to approach. Aloha okou, kakou, makou. 🌺((🤙🏾))
