About P.T. Barnum and Jenny Lind (The opera singer) there is NO EVIDENCE that they had any type of innaproppriate relationship in real life. She wanted to stop the tour because she was tired of life on the road after doing 93 concerts in America and she was actually a great person and wanted to open a girls' music school in Stockholm, the city of her debut. I think is very interesting that they made P.T. Barnum a much better person than he actually was, but vilanized Jenny Lind, who was actually good...

Barnum, in real life and lightly touched on in the film, was a con man and slaver. Most of the people who performed for him, he purchased and abused. He lied, exaggerated, forged. The Fiji mermaid being a prime example. Jenny Lind worked with him briefly and left the tour because she found him appalling, specifically how he treated the people who made him rich. She spoke out against him and I can only imagine how disgusted she would be by this portrayal of her. He didn’t invent the circus but he did create the three ring circus format specifically with the inclusion of the the freak show. Another thing that bugged me in this film was the line about “they’re laughing anyways, might as well get paid” was said by the actual actor of Tom Thumb but they gave it to Barnum. Now freak shows as a whole, I’m kinda down for so long as autonomy and control stays with the “freaks”. The history is marred due to the severe oppression faced by the people involved. On one side, it’s a ways people with disabilities or abnormalities were able to survive and even gain wealth and freedom in a time where the other options was homelessness or abusive institutions. On the other side, it was birthed from and popularized by the oppressors exploiting them for money.

I have to admit that one of the things I find most annoying about this film is the fact that Jenny Lind was a famous soprano known throughout her time as “the Swedish nightingale” and was very well known for her high notes, especially her high F sharp, which Mendelssohn featured no less than 23 times in the same piece written for her. And this movie decided to make her nothing remotely similar to a soprano. It might be stupid, but it just irks me… a lot.

I agree, it bothers me a bit as well. She was a Coloratura soprano. As much as I enjoyed Loren Allred's performance, it was not operatic. Most people ended up hearing that this wasnt an accurate portrayal of the circle and its common enough that historical figures are built up that I guess I just cant get too worked up over it even if I dislike what was done (they really should have just fictionalized everything) but to potray James Gordon Bennett (the reporter) and Jenny Lind (the opera singer) when most people have never heard of them and most audience for this never heard how dirty this film did them, pisses me off.

He lived until about 23 and before he died he told his friends he wished to be buried at sea so scientists couldn’t steal his body to dissect and experiment on it. Sadly one of his friends betrayed him and sold his body to the famous John Hunter. His skeleton was then put on display at the museum up until last year. Yeah I agree with that. While Highschool Musical was entertaining at best it really wasn’t my thing at the time despite it being a point of obsession with my two younger sisters and my mother. When we were kids we had one big tv in the living room and no iPads or iPhones or iPods to watch anything on until mid- middle school. We had to watch everything together, meaning that if one of us wanted to watch something different than the other two, guess who wasn’t watching shit if they couldn’t deal with it. So I must have watched those films a million times over the course of my childhood. I only developed an appreciation for it later in life when he started branching out and doing other roles that weren’t Disney or musical related. His career has been a diverse amount of roles and showcased his talent solidly and now when I look back on those annoying musical movies especially after I watched this movie I don’t feel as annoyed or embarrassed to admit I enjoyed it and admire the start to his career. He’s one of those actors that has now done almost everything when it comes to range in tv and movies. I think this is true for a lot of Disney actors though, for the ones that moved on, you don’t need to like their early starts to fame to appreciate the talent that got them where they are today.

I agree with Stef that the music really integrates naturally with the scenes. I bet I will get some replies about this because so many love the soundtrack, but I feel weird about the music in this musical. I like the songs and they go well with scenes, but I sort of forget them once they are done. I am definitely not an aficionado of musicals, but have seen a number of film ones and some in theater. This is the only musical I can ever remember *not* thinking about (and likely humming) at least one song after I finish watching it. I don't know why, but these songs just don't stay with me. The visuals, the vibe, and, to a certain extent, the message of the story is what caused me to rewatch the film a couple times. I am glad you commented on Barnum being an asshole so much. I have noticed the older I get, the less I am willing to tolerate main characters that are awful people. I feel like I am always more interested in the side characters nowadays. I think most Americans, even though they don't know many details, do have a general negative opinion of these traveling circuses because the mistreat of animals and performers has been known since nearly their creation. People have just cared about it more in recent decades.

I agree that, while this movie was fun, it's unfortunate that they felt the need to base it on real people when the story so loosely reflects reality. Unfortunately, I think that sometimes studios want to latch onto an easy hook for movies, and the "based on a true story" is probably one of those hooks that helps in a pitch meeting.

38:03 - "Held down, and someone forced the tattoos on him.". That's actually what the spirl of Barnum's 2nd tattooed man was. Captain Costentenus claimed that he was captured by a cruel king who offered him a choice in his method of death: dismemberment, eaten by 🐅, stung to death by wasps, or having his entire body tattooed. If he survived, he was free to go. 53:43 - Notice that journalist James Gordon Bennett Sr. complimented the performers as human beings. He hates the fakeness that Barnum was showing. Perhaps, if it was the trapeze artists performing and the Bearded Lady singing, he would've been a lot more generous in his reviews. (My take on his character. Not my viewpoint at all).

Enjoyed the music and the message of the movie. Although I wanted more of Anne and Philip love story, but well they’re not the main character. Btw Zendaya and Zac did most of their stunts for “Rewrite The Stars” scene. They got bruises, burns, and bumped into each other A LOT. Zendaya actually had to train with trapeze artists. Zac learned some moves as well and of course there’s vocal and dance training/practices/rehearsals. So I can’t hate too much on the actors/actresses who worked hard and put so much into the movie. They did amazingly well for what they were given.. BUT yeah PT was NOT A GOOD GUY and yeah the animal cruelty and mistreatment of their performers as well was horrible. So yeah even the movie was trying to “redeem” him or his character in the movie. I can’t sympathize for PT at all… he was a disgusting man. 😆

Justice for Jenny Lind! After seeing this movie I read up on her story and would love to have her life documented as a film. She was born out of wedlock and became a philanthropist who donated a lot of money to many different causes. The romance between Barnum and Lind is fabricated for the sake of the movie plot and I think her actual life is worth exploring. She is said to have had many suitors and received several proposals (one of which is H.C. Andersen who allegedly wrote The Nightingale about her) but refused them all until she settled down with a man 9 years younger than her.

Having been in many interracial relationships, I can say that the subject of my race as a black woman will always come up. It's not a matter of "if" it will come up, but "when." Hell, last year, I went on a date with my boyfriend, who looks white, and a guy came up to us and started talking to both of us. Really sweet and cool guy! Until he whispered in my boyfriend's ear that he only liked "the white parts of America" while pointing to me before leaving the bar for the night. When I tell you both my boyfriend and I were absolutely FLOORED and didn't know how to even respond to such foolishness. So the people having a problem with interracial relationships in the movie was pretty valid because I still get shit for it in the present day.

As much as I love the From Now On song, I kind of hate the scene it goes with. It feels like it becomes the burden of the "freaks"/entertainers to comfort Barnum and make him feel better about how hard his life has become, but there's not really acknowledgement for how hard their life had been while he (essentially) abandoned them. At no point during this scene do we really get an apology from Barnum to them. He doesn't take accountability for ignoring them, shutting them out, treating them poorly and even attempting to distance himself to become more popular with the critics.

Jackmans character is playing Zacs character the entire time. any time they take shots Jackman either just moves his around the bar alot and doesnt actually take it. Or his glass is only half full while Zacs is full. Until the end, after Zac agrees to join him. Also during the bargening, Zac goes down by 2 Jackman only goes up by one. And finally, if you watch closely you can see the reason he wanted Zacs character to join him. During the beginning every move he makes he either uses props or is assisted, while Zac then does similar stunts during his part with no props, no assistance and he does it alot smoother and more natuarally. p.s. I loooove this movie. It's so rediculous as legitimately none of it was ever real. My favorite part in my first watch through was seeing the quote at the end, looking P.T. Barnum up on Wikipedia, and seeing "There's a sucker born every minute" in the opening paragraph. 😂 Unlike many others in the comments, I am fortunately able to suspend my dibelief and seperate the real story from this incredible musical as it's just so fantastical; it's like making a fun musical about a war criminal. This man was for sure one of the worst people to have ever lived. I loved the circus as a child, but I always felt weird about the animal acts and as I grew older, appalled. Rest in piss Barnum & Bailey's. You can stay a thing of the past and this movie, as delightful as it is, proves that. 10/10 movie for me though, and that soundtrack?? 😍

I remember seeing an actual tiger show when I was 5 or 6 at our city's state fair they did every summer and our local circus also had Elephants and Lions when I was little. I didn't get the impact of what was happening AT ALL!!! (May I add we live in a very northern state in the U.S. called Maine and it snows here anywhere from Halloween through Mother's Day sooooo not prime habitat for those kinds of animals by any stretch!!!!!!!!) Child me liked seeing all the animals and had no idea what was happening😔😔😔😔😔 It wasn't until I was around 12ish that I started to understand why there were people outside the circus every year protesting what was happening. By that point, I had started to look into what was happening and watching movies like Water for Elephants and watching various documentaries on what was happening at these circuses. I was horrified by what I saw and I stopped going anytime they had advertised wild animal shows. I started getting back into horses at that point as well as going to the local 4H shows they did at our local state fair instead and seeing all the bunnies, chickens, and cattle they had on display as well as the horse shows they ran and the cart pulling shows they did that were always super interesting to watch for me. The last animal-related thing they offered that I went to was this Royal Gala horse show from Spain which ended up being people basically doing liberty training with their horses and riding them bareback..... which my inner horse girl thought was super cool!!!!! Then they did state that these guys from Animal Planet were going to bring their snakes, lizards, and mostly alligators that they had rescued and rehabed and these ones couldn't be released back for various reasons. They run a sanctuary for bigger reptiles in Florida and they were at our local state fair showing off some of their creatures. (To be fair, our summers get pretty warm in late July. August is the worst in terms of heat. Sooooo.... I imagine the cold-blooded reptiles were fine and dandy since it can get up to the 100 degrees Fahrenheit range in August which is when our local state fair is, and when the reptile people showed up.) They put on a really interesting exhibit!!!!!!!!!! Those were the only two shows I sought out watching, aside from Cirque de Solei when they came this past winter (Although, I couldn't get tickets in time to see them😭😭😭) I haven't been to the circus since I was 12 sooooooo..... I have no idea if they are even still here or still do wild animal shows anymore!!!!! I used to love our local state fair they did every year, but after so long it wasn't worth the entry fee and so we stuck to going to our local free music festival they did every year before the younger kids start school again!!!!!!!!! THAT was always a blast!!!! They do lots of different musical groups from all over, including Indigenous singers, which were always super cool to listen to!!!!!!! Sometimes I'd go with my Mom, and sometimes I'd go with a group of friends, it depends!!!!! The food booths are always to die for, and so are the crafters who were selling their products!!!!! Always new things to do and listen to every single year!!!! Which is why we all STILL go all these years later!!!!

@@nightfall902 yes but circuses where what was being discussed here. Whataboutism is not a good look btw. Circus is not a proper environment for wild animal, ever. Domesticated animals are used to working with humans and finding a species typical environment for a dog, cat a horse is much easier than an elephant or a lion. Private citizens mistreating their animals is a different issue. They are also less likely to try to train lions to do tricks. Most of these issues could be treated with good animal protections laws but if they don’t exist there’s nothing to force people’s to be less shitty.

I do love the soundtrack of this movie but can't get over the fact that like its not really a great musical by technical standards. Almost all the songs don't actually serve story purpose and are merely a way to do a montage (why are there so many montages?). If you didn't have the visuals, most of the songs wouldn't make sense or move the plot along, which is the exact opposite of what you want from a musical. Not to mention, the songs that are meant to give insight into the emotions of the character generally are not needed, we get a lot of that in the speaking scenes and the songs just feel gratuitous. Making a musical isn't just throwing songs in a movie, its it's own art form, and I wish modern movie musicals understood that.

About 28:17, there’s a video floating around somewhere out there, I can’t remember if it was an interview or something else, where Zendaya answers the question about her name‘s pronouncement. There she says it’s ZenDAYa, not ZenDAHYA.

Ok so like this isn't a movie but because of y'all's background In music I would rally live to see you guys react to Julie and the Phantoms. The singing is soooo goooodd and I'd just really live to hear y'all's thoughts on it.

The soundtrack to this movie is great! The storyline...eh. I've always thought it would make a great stage show, like on Broadway. That would be fantastic and so much fun. And hopefully they could edit the storyline a bit to put more emphasis on the performers and less on asshole Barnum.

In real like Jenny Lind did not have an affair with PT Barnum and she finished her American tour and went back home

Barnum took on Lind because she well known and well loved...he had never even heard her sing. She did it for the money. No relationship at all...he was 60 when he got into the circus, married his second wife 3 years later...a woman younger than his daughters. I hope people do the research and don't think this is in any way true. (but you know how people are)

When I first watched this movie (before I knew of what the real P.T. was like), I was in awe. I watched it in my uncles home theater on a comfortable couch with surround sound speakers. It was mind-blowing.

I saw this in GOLD CLASS. A high school friend invited me and I hadn’t seen her in ages so I went, and she didn’t tel me until we were at the FRONT of the line that we were seeing it gold class… And the GC seats, are like sets of 2… she sat with her sister, and I was sat next to some random man eating red rock deli chips 😭😭😭 and the ticket was like $50 so I couldn’t even buy a choctop!

The real bearded lady started circus at age 3 months. Saw some of these guys at Ridley's Believe It Or Not Museum. It was pretty cool although in real life all these guys were different ages and from different places of the world.

20:00 point them to Roberto Carlos' free kick curve in WC 1998, that sprouted several papers about the physics of football pitches and affected the design of later balls with different materials to alter the way players could dribble. ....or, point them to F1 teams testing developing technologies in racing cars that would later be added to street cars... like, injection systems, suspension rigs, gear boxes, turbo chargers... hell, even the term _sniper_ has an origin in sports: it was the marksman who could hunt a _snipe,_ which is known to be extremely difficult to shoot at.

It's so screwed up the way they portrayed Jenny Lynd in this. They never had any sort of inappropriate relationship, and Lynd left the tour for a combination of reasons, the biggest ones being the way Barnum treated people and also Lynd finding out that the money she thought was going to charity from her tour, he was pocketing, and she found out that the tour was making way more money than he was telling her. There also wasn't any kiss between Barnum and Lynd, that like most things in this movie was made up to make Lynd a villain of this movie, which was certainly a choice. Lynd was another person Barnum exploited and lied to, and she was fed up with it and left, and they chose to make her the villain lol. Abhorrent.

One thing that I’m really happy about is most circuses, at least reputable ones, no longer have animals, because it’s cruel to keep them in the way circuses used to. It was obvious animal abuse, and people (at least decent people) stopped tolerating it. 37 states have banned the use of wild animals altogether. Most countries have laws against it. The ones who don’t have laws are mostly underdeveloped countries

Speaking of Jack Black, Have you considered reacting to School of Rock? The movie is my favorite and it brings back happy memories of my father (he was a tattoo artist that loved rock music)
