Kdenlive - A simple guide to rotoscoping.

Фильм және анимация

A very simple guide to rotoscoping in kdenlive, using proxied clips. In this video I'm just transitioning two somewhat unrelated clips, using rotoscoping and affine.

It should be stated that in order to use rotoscoping (windows versions 18 & 19 - maybe 20 too) you must HIDE Edit Mode! If you are in edit mode, rotoscope won't work. (At least it didn't work for ME.) You can't click the preview to add a node. There's a button for this (Show/Hide edit mode) under the preview display. (It took me over an hour watching every roto video on youtube to figure this out.)

Even though I’m just starting and only half thought about rotoscoping this is now just making me think of all the stuff that could be possible, now that I actually have a tool that can do that.

When I watched this I didn't think it was gonna be a good tutorial. And then it turned out it was. How the hell did you manage that by just sitting there doing the thing and narrating it in the smoothest, most Bob Ross-esque voice possible?

Thank you :-) I'm using compiz. You can install it either using synaptic or via terminal... "sudo apt-get update" ....then "sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-fusion-plugins-extra compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-plugins" ....without the quotes. Then in the compiz config settings manager, you can configure huge amounts of things. Hope that helps :-)

Be sure your playhead is on the clip you want to rotoscope. Drag the effect on top of the clip. If the effects panel does not open, click on the clip. Then in the Project Monitor, you should get the prompt "Click to add points..." prompt. Then left click with the mouse and close the area by right clicking once. If you mess up and need to delete the selected area, delete the effect by clicking on the trash can. If you need to rotoscope another area on the same clip, then apply the effect another time. I'm using version 22.12.1.

Yes. On my version of kdenlive, there are 5 predefined layouts you can use, Logging, Editing, Audio, Effects, and Color. These you select in the upper right hand corner. I use the Editing layout most of the time.
