KCSE 2018 ENGLISH PAPER ONE REVISION | ORAL POEM| RHYME |FEATURES | PERFORMANCE

In this video, I discuss a revision of KCSE English Paper One Oral Skills Section with specific focus on the oral Poem
A POISON TREE
I was angry with my friend; (a)
I told my wrath, my wrath did end. (a)
I was angry with my foe: (b)
I told it not, my wrath did grow (b)
And I watered it in fears, (c)
Night and morning with tears; (c)
And I sunned it with smiles, (d)
And with soft deceitful wiles. (d)
And it grew both day and night. (e)
Till it bore an apple bright. (e)
And my foe beheld it shine, (f)
And he knew that it was mine. (f)
And into my garden stole, (g)
When the night had veiled the pole; (g)
In the morning glad I see; (h)
My foe outstretched beneath the tree. (h)
~ By William Blake
(i) Identify and explain any two features that would make this poem easy to recite (4mks)
(a) Consonance ~ had veiled /d/
(b) Repetition ~ my foe, my wrath
(c) Assonance ~ beneath the tree /i/
(ii) Describe the rhyme scheme of the poem. (3mks)
aabb ccdd eeff gghh- Regular- Predictable
(iii) In an oral performance, how would you say the last line of the poem? (2mks)
~ I would use a falling intonation to show that the poem has ended.
~ I would stress the words 'foe' 'outstretched ' 'tree' to highlight the anguish by the foe which amuses the persona.

Thank you sir. But how can i familiarize with those new vocabularies like *Foe* Wrath* and how to derive their meaning if used in a poem

I think Question two is limited to verbal cues only because we are asked how to 'say'. In the case where we are asked how to 'perform', then we include both verbal and non verbal cues.

Thanks so much for the feedback and input. In last year's KCSE, the question was about saying; verbal and non-verbal cues were awarded during marking. You can play around with having the first response as the verbal and try nonverbal in another response. That's my take.
