KCPQ 13 commercial break & sign-off March 4 1984

Ойын-сауық

A lengthy original sign-off for KCPQ 13 in the early hours of March 4, 1984. Various station promos, commercials, and public service announcements lead into the sign-off, which includes the Lord's Prayer in sign-language (by Chief Shakta Bear-Step), a lovely rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner", and Jan Peerce performing "The Bluebird of Happiness" against Washington State scenery. I previously uploaded a slightly later KCPQ sign-off but this one is in better condition and moderately longer.

When the transmitter shut off at the very end of the video, another television station had a signal strong enough to be received on KCPQ 13. This is probably the reason why voices can be heard after the transmitter has been shut off.

Reposting from the 1985 and 1996 KCPQ signoff clips: Some more info about the "Bluebird of Happiness" recording featured in this signoff: It's not the original 1945 recording; this one uses a later 1958 recording featuring Joe Reisman and his Orchestra (the original one used the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sylvan Levin). Nonetheless, this is still a beautiful film!

A Native Indian signing the Lord's Prayer and the National Anthem with the American Flag as the back drop? God, I miss those days as a child. I was 7 in 1984. TV is all trash now. I don't even watch it. Also, KCPQ13 was the station I remember growing up in the Bremerton/Port Orchard area. So many memories from a 10 minute video.

I don't mind 24 hour a day programming, but it would be nice if more stations took a few minutes (and sacrificed a few advertising dollars) during the night to still do this sort of thing as a transition to a new broadcast day.

@Keyser It's even more trash now. I was born in 73, and I wish we could go back. No better times than the 80-90's!

Back when stations signed off and played The National Anthem. Then signed back on usually w/ some kind of inspirational message.

Alan Katzer I don’t think any tv station here in New Orleans used the fourth stanza star spangled banner film. KLRU, the PBS station behind “Austin City Limits” used the film during its sign offs and used it one more time for its analog sign off in 2009.
