KC-135 PILOT SHOWS OFF SKILL AND CONTROL • CLEARED FOR THE OPTION • BEST USAF PILOTS RAF MILDENHALL

Ойын-сауық

Ladies, gents and teddy bears, we get to see some awesome low approaches from various fighter jets, but there is something spectacular about low approaches when it comes to the big iron heavies. We have a series of low approaches from RAF Mildenhall from 2 KC-135’s. The control is phenomenal and really shows off how skilful these KC-135 pilots really are.
What does " Cleared For The Option" mean?
It means an ATC authorization for an aircraft to make a touch-and-go, low approach, missed approach, stop and go, or full stop landing at the discretion of the pilot. It is normally used in training so that an instructor can evaluate a student's performance under changing situations.
What is a Low Approach?
It is a when an aircraft will approach the runway at a low altitude (minimum altitude specified by ATC) and will pass low and go around. It is sometimes referred to as a low pass, and is essentially a go-around manoeuvre following an approach. Instead of touching down, a pilot may wish to go-around without touching down in order to expedite a particular operation.
Why do aircraft carry out a Low Approach?
Well, practice makes perfect but can also burn fuel too. But, this manoeuvre can be useful in a hostile, combat or an emergency scenario such as an issue with the runway. Issues can include debris on the runway, a vehicle or aircraft on the runway or a pilot getting things wrong on landing. The low approach can then get the pilot to action the go around procedure and try again for a landing.
KC-135
The KC-135 Stratotanker provides the core aerial refuelling capability for the US Air Force and has excelled in this role for more than 60 years. This unique asset enhances the Air Force's capability to accomplish its primary mission of global reach. It also provides aerial refueling support to Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and allied nation aircraft such as the RAF's Rivet Joint. At RAF Mildenhall, it proudly serves with the 351st Air Refueling Squadron of the 100th Air Refueling Wing. It proudly shows off its famous 'Square D' on its tail, the only WWII tail marking still in service today

KC and The Heavy Metal Band! It's great to see the action from RAF Mildenhall. The "heavies" just as important. Some skill to fly those beauties, amazing! Thanks Ted for the info too. Everyday a school day at TCS. ❤

Judging by the offset of the nose in relation to the center line I’d say there was a good crosswind. Tracking the extended center line in a crosswind is a challenge and is good training. Cheers from Washington DC!

These tanker approaches appeared to be what's called a Landing Attitude Demonstration. Done to teach newer pilots what it looks like to land on a different runway away from home.

lightly kiss, add a touch of power, fly the jet, pull a little power, lightly kiss, add a little power, 2000’remaining, go around, check flaps to 20, confirm speed brakes, TRIM!, gear up.

The fighter jocks get all the attention but people forget there are so many highly talented and dedicated pilots that fly other planes like the tankers, cargo, recon and heavy bombers in the USAF.

That is some low flying skill along centre line of runway at less than 20ft? I'm guessing not just once neither. Nor was for a brief moment. That's was awesome. The sort of flying required in combat. Low and controlled. Sporned another classic quote of the day. 'Who needs ant Killar?' 'Get one of these' quotes and action under gorgeous skies.

Got to giggle - I remember the civilian version of that aircraft back in the 1970's when they had turbojet engines... you would not have been standing there... at least not without ear defenders on and even then it would have hurt!
