Kayak MOTOR First Impressions!! (Newport NK180)

Ойын-сауық

Join me in this video to see me try out a kayak motor for the first time! I went out on a smaller reservoir testing out the Newport NK180 for the first time and gave my thoughts on it.

Love my Shoalie with NK180. It takes a while to get your boat rigged perfectly with the motor and controls. Have fun!

Congrats dude, the motor is such a helpful tool while out fishing, if you don't want to use it or don't need it, you don't have to use it, which is cool!! Definitely the best thing I ever bought for my kayak!! Now John has to get one lol

I have an old town sportman 106 with the minnkota onboard built into the floor. I absolutely love it. It’s so nice to have a quick way back to the ramp if I get hurt or need to get home asap . I still love to paddle and the motor pops up and is clear from the water and I can drift shallow water like any other kayak . A Motor is a game changer . Just make sure you register it as a motorboat it’s not expensive I pay 22 dollars for 2 years

Congrats on your NK180! It will make life so much easier for you kayak fishing, I love mine, just wish I had gone with the NK300 but it came out a month after I bought my NK180 lol. Maybe later this year or next. Btw it is mostly useful for river/creek fishing, ALWAYS go upstream and fish, then you can motor back to your launch, or if your battery dies or any malfunction, you can float back to the launch. Never motor downstream, you WILL regret it, trust me! Also check the DNR websites to see if they have depth gauges and flow ratings on the rivers/creeks you fish. That's what I do in Va like on the Shenandoah rivers etc.

Thanks! I'm definitely excited to use the motor more! Thanks for the tips! I would probably only go down river on rivers that aren't dam controlled if I'm fishing by myself.

I have an nks180 on my kayak as well with hand steering. Have had it for a couple of years now with zero issues. I have taken it up River a few times, and have hit the motor on the bottom several times with no damage. It’s a tough little motor. Enjoy!

That's great to hear! I have a feeling I will be pretty rough on it when river fishing.

I use mine in any depth water, if it's around 2ft. If it gets shallow, I just pull it up and use my PDL drive, or paddle.

Btw in forward the motor does NOT lock down, so if you hit something it can kick up and hopefully not damage the motor.

Definitely use the magnet on your wrist I was getting out of mine and knocked the throttle forward and it took off and thankfully the magnet popped off and killed the motor. It would have went down the withlacoochee river down to the gulf if I didn’t have that wristband on 😂

I have been using Amazon lifep04 batteries, two 12v 50ah wired in series, in a harbor freight plastic tool box cost me about $350 for the batteries and box. I get several hours running 50-70% just to travel upriver mainly. Anyone buying a torqeedo and paying all that money and being locked into their tiny batteries is a fool, and likely a rich fool lol.

Dang, that sounds like a great deal for the batteries! I'll definitely look into that if I buy any batteries in the future.

No fishing kayak is built for speed. They are ALL displacement hulls which are SLOW.

Reverse is barely useful, and you won't really need it much in my experience.
