You know what really got me PO'd watching this video? The fact that not one of those power boaters stood by to render assistance, as they are required to by law. At the very least, a responsible boater would have come in and done their best to block the wakes for you, especially when you attempted to re-board the kayak. They also could have idled 20-30 feet off your side as you were making your way back to the 'doggy beach' to ensure that you didn't get flipped by another wake. Another smart thing would have been for someone to make a "pan-pan" call to the Coast Guard and the marine police on channel 16, and then stood by until they arrived.

Kayak fishermen are reckless with their own safety. I've lost count of the amount of safely/rescue courses I've done as a whitewater and sea kayaker. These guys clearly had no idea or even rescue equipment!

Congrats on making it back to shore. As one who nearly drowned after a canoe accident involving a rescue and hospital treatment for hypothermia, I fully appreciate the wisdom you gained and the advice you gave. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing this video. A lot of traffic was occurring when you got flipped. I know it is hard to navigate each wake from each boat. I learned a lot from this video. Don't mind all the tips and bad comments...it's easy to say things in the comfort of a dry home. You have a pretty nice kayak which is "fully" rigged. I think some of the commenters are jealous. I'm not going to give any advice for I think it has already been said. Too bad you learned the hard way. Thanks again for posting this video; it takes balls to show this, I know.

I've found it's easier for me to reach for the furthest h rail from underneath the Yak. Once I have hold of it I simultaneously pull it towards me while lifting (pushing up) the h rail closest to me. It rolls upright much easier with a lot but less effort.

Like the post. All kayakers eventually take a dip. No shame in that. I have been kayaking for 25 years and recently had my first flip. It will always catch you off guard. Seems like you didn’t let it defeat you. Just simply learned from the situation and keep going. Great job and great educational video! Handled it calmly and like a champ.

I am glad I saw this video-learned a lot from this with all the things you did. I have added a few short ropes to the sides and everything has been tethered in since I watched this. Really glad you were OK. I had a really huge wave on a freshwater lake from a powerboat. The wave just kept getting bigger and bigger like it was picking up speed as it headed toward us. I was able to turn away just enough so that it hit me from behind without flipping me over. I would not have had about time to turn into the wave with the front. It was really close and I definitely would have rolled if I didn't have that extra second to turn.

I've gone through the inlet before and it is sketchy. Glad you made it out ok. Thanks for sharing

Very smart of you leashed everything

I hope this vid stays out here forever! I too was humbled after 8 years of kayaking with no incidents and the ocean demonstrated it's power and I was dump within a split second of me leaving the beach. The jarring part of the experience to me was the immediate mental shock! Mentally you think your prepared until it happens, I call it the "look mom" affect, which usually happens when you are at the top of your game. I want to thank you very much for posting this, I believe in light of the situation you guys did a great job keeping cool and finally recovering. Also because of this video I plan on practicing in a controlled environment before my next trip with my PA 14. I'm sure you won't mind me sharing with friends for educational purposes thanks again.

Hey thanks for the comment. Yeah I hope the video helps, that's the intention. Kayak fishing is growing fast and I've seem a few people struggle in the water. From falling out in freezing and not able to self rescue to falling off jet ski and have the wind put it out too fast. I think we over estimate our capabilities some times, we never think it will happen to us.

1. Always point the bow at a 45 degree angle to a big wave 2. Have a short righting line in your pfd or pocket that has a caregiver you can clip on to use to flip back over 3. Buy a small kayak bailer pump Best of luck

Thank you for sharing! Using your paddle to "slap" the water on the side you are tipping also helps stops it from overturning. But this happened so quickly as all accidents do. I'm ordering a knife to attach to the front of my life vest, and putting some rope on my kayak as well!

Same happened to me, a little more inside of the inlet, finally got towed to the shore by a boat, couldn’t flip it back. You did it pretty good!

THANK you for sharing... Gives good tips and pointers for others (me) to keep in mind. Good that the weather, currents, and boat traffic were not as bad as could have been.

I just got a sit on top, feels like a barge at times, glad to know the rope on side trick to flip back if need it. I have had run in with motor boaters, some are jerks. glad your safe to kayak another day, and thanks for the tip.

I had a huge deck boat purposely kick up a massive wake for me on a small lake 3.5 near 4 ft swell. All in my foldable tucktec. Seems to have handled it better than your fishing barge.

Bought an Outback last year. The more of these videos that I watch, the more I'm inclined to install an automatic pump in my kayak. The battery is already there for the fish-finder and for the trolling motor. Yes, I had to watch this video 3 or 4 times before I notice the prop when you first flipped. Yes, aiming into the waves could have avoided this. Yes, this is taught in all boating safety classes that boaters with any type of motor are required to take. You really have to pick your day in Manasquan Inlet, NJ. Not impossible place to yak. But it's a bad place to be in trouble. Thanks for havin the guts to post this video.

Every kayaker should go out in controlled rough conditions and practice what happens when you get flipped upside down - how to right your kayak, how to get back into the kayak. How to make sure all your stuff is secure, and how to pack our kayak so that it isn't a big floating yard sale. Eventually everybody gets wet kayaking.

Agreed. You should practice flipping, getting comfortable in the water, and flipping it back before you do anything else. Then practice rescues over and over. Once you've got flips, solo recoveries and rescues down, then you're ready to have fun. Smart using a leash to flip it back. Nice job and thanks for sharing. Also, great job leashing almost everything. Rule #1 - you WILL flip your kayak. Make sure everything is ready for the flip - leash everything down.

From what I have seen I would never go offshore in a PA. I’d want something like a Kraken or a Tarpon 160. But I’m glad to see you got to shore.

I fished there years ago. nobody cuts you any slack there. The shore fishermen will try to hit you with lead sinkers and the boats don't slow down. Appreciate the video and glad you didn't lose more and made it safe to shore. You stayed pretty calm through all of that.before I ever head out into the bays I'm going to practice re-entry into the kayak this just reinforces how important it is to be able to get back on and hopefully save your gear and butt. never thought that much water would get in there now I know.thanks again

Thanks for watching. I was surprised with the amount of water too, I got the rubber for the front hatch that comes with the new pa and hopefully that will help. I notice even in some chop I get some water in the front hatch. Love the kayak but they should've done something about that.

Great job. Plenty of guys free dive and spear fish in the inlet. As long at you got a PDF on you will almost always be alright. Ive had my hull fill up before. Seems scary, but used my hoodie to bail the water out. After that I now have a manual hand pump. Takes less than a minute to bail the hull. No big deal anymore.

At least you had everything tethered! Always prepare to be rolled, tether your stuff and wear your lifejacket. I rolled in the ocean, my lure got stuck on my foot and was wrapping the line around my legs making it hard to swim! I had everything tethered though so I only lost a pair of sunglasses.

"Self Rescue" Class is the Best thing I ever did on my husband's insistance. I suggest it to everbody, It's a wonderful thing to have under your belt.🤙🏼 One boat helps the other boat flip...easy when ya learn how.

Glad you said you were practicing for the future. To prevent this in coming excursions, use you paddle to brace the kayak. Your paddle was stowed, and useless to maintain your stability.

Honestly if I had a boat and I see a kayaker or a boat in trouble is pure common sense to go and help is not rocket science, glad you made it out safely.

Great video. I'm getting a kayak tomorrow. Do you think it would be better to not leash the rods to not be at risk of getting tangled in all the leashes? I was thinking about just putting flotation on my rods instead.

That’s a good option but I think depending on how rough the water is recovering everything and worrying about the water in the yak might be difficult. I lost a couple things that were floating around and I just worried about getting back on land, to tell you the truth I was so worried about sinking the kayak I forgot about the rods, my brother in law that was there with me saw them hanging and told me. I always have a knife on my life vest. I had to use it to cut the line of that surf caster but it would’ve cut the leash with no problems. With all that is a personal choise lol

Also last year I did a practice day jumping off and back on, I plan on doing that again this year and I’ll make sure to record it. Im Glade you made it. Good video. You cant' avoid wave tipping you over. Make sure seat is in lowest position. I too have PA 14 and also fish alone. Where i fish there is large tug boats and there creates huge waves and tipped me over sitting high. Having boondox landing gear saved me. The legs i was able to stand and pull anchor line. Since that awful experience i have installed hobie sidekicks and now so safe.

My two cents worth I own a 2013 PA and go out a few miles the wakes the wind and other conditions can propel a tip over, that said the minute you hear and see a boat passing by the next thing is to expect the waves you must point your bow perpendicular to the waves created by the boats there might be 3 or more you must face but you will not tip over not on that boat. I have taken 8 and 10 feet high waves you must get in front of them then continue on your direction. Tight lines!

Live firing exercise. Good practice, if unintended! You survived to tell the tale, and probably gained a lot from the experience. Kudos for sharing it too, everyone can learn from your situation.

The boat traffic is nuts over there.. I WOULD NEVER TRY THAT!, ESPECIALLY THEIR. You gotta stay safe bro, I always try to stay as far away from boaters as possible. Between them speeding and the wake it just makes it SUPER uncomfortable, besides very few boaters have consideration for kayakers. Nice video tho, maybe I'll see you on the water one day.

Been there, done that. Turning, cross wave, and a wind gust, Blub Blub, Blub. Thought I ripped out my belly button getting back in it.

- go to a kayak club - learn the support strokes (low support and high support) - hold the paddle in your hands when you are not fishing In this situation a simple support stroke would have prevented the capsize. USE YOUR PADDLE !

You should check out the KZread video of a Hobie Pro Angler 14 with an Expandacraft outrigger kit on it. If I were going offshore, I'd put an outrigger on both sides. Expandacraft has more than twice the volume as the Hobie outrigger.

If you have a break-apart paddle will the shaft fit into the scupper hole to help turn it to you like a lever?

G'day mate from Australia. In my kit I have a small length of rope ( according to your body size ) with a carrabina to attatch to side handle of yak , at the other end make a trapeze w with a piece of P.V.C. for a foot hold . On the water this this attached to yak handle & kept tidy with a rubber band . When you flip

After watching this video I’m rethinking if I should by a kayak. This happened to you close to the beach and during summer, I was just thinking if was fall and not as close to the beach.

They do have drains on top but the compartment on the front goes inside the kayak which is suppost to be sealed with a rubber but it doesn’t do such a good job if you have a lot of water on it

Its hard if u are going in an inlet with boats coming 2 ways

Thank you for sharing this any of us can get into trouble. You could have turned the prow of the kayak to face the oncoming bow wave and hit it at a right angle and turned back to your course when it had passed. I have done this in a busy channel and it works. The boat driver was an asshole who should have slowed down when he saw he was passing kayaks. I leave a loop of rope permanently on the back of my kayak for swimmers to grab. It is very useful for snorkeling too. I had sit inside sea kayaks for a while and I found a large plastic jug was better than a pump for bailing water. It was good to have both jug and pump as they complemented one another but the jug was faster. It is VERY scary to be in rough water in an unstable kayak. I always throw an old life jacket or even dry bags full of air in the hatch to give some buoyancy. I am not preaching, I have been in similar trouble a few times and know what it is like

Amazing how much water got in that front hatch. It wasn't flipped that long.

well done m8, good recovery and you kept your head, Panic is so hard to control in a situation like that. just a quick question, it looked like you had self draining holes, how come you were so bow heavy, had water got in to the bulkhead (Hull).

Hey Thanks for watching it. So the pro angler is a sit on top and it has 1 hatch on the front that does a horrible job of keeping water out of the kayak, so there is a lot space for water inside the kayak as well

just like a boat, you cross the wakes at 45 degrees

You had to point your bow to the wakes or tip.

i know it's an old vid, and i don't have a kayak but on my dinghies both have a thin rope down the side from the mast to the stern attached with bungee to take the slack out of it for that very reason to help you re right it after a capsize, happens so much half the time i know it's going and just jump over the side and don't even get wet lol just thought might be useful for someone as it would be a lifesaver in this situation if they were fitted

Eu troquei para o Outback pq e mais facil de carregar e tb e bem estavel. O Proangler e suposto ser o mais estavel mas eu acho que por a cadeira ser mais alta afeta um pouco a estabilidade. Eu to muito satisfeito com a troca pro Outback, pra pedala e mais facil de mover pra la e pra ca do que o proangler

Hobie pa 14 are very stable facing huge waved or swell but once parallel or large waves behind the kayak it will tip you over. I have flipped many times. Now i have hobie sidekick which solved this problem.

hobie's front hatch seems to have a problem when flipped. my hobie adventure 2013 let water in thru front hatch when I practiced flipping and self rescue. I'm so surprised that much water into hull in 90sec. in case of ocean kayak prowler . sealed front hatch doesn't let water into her hull during same flipping and rescue practice. hobie cat company must consider tight click seal in front hatch.

Yeah right now I have a 19 outback because it’s a little easier for me but I notice first few trips at least a good 3 bottles of water. Than they came out with a seal for it and now I barely get any even with a lot of waves. That’s was something that worries me quite a bit since the front hatch on the pro angler was so big

Hey Thanks for watching it. After that day the first thing I bought was a bilge pump but I hope I don't need it. We usually don't see such a wide kayak flip so we don't realize how hard it is to flip it back so I hope this helps.

how did so much water get in the kayak? I thought expensive kayaks are sealed?

Not sealed, they have rubber seals in the front that helps with waves and rain and stuff but it was under water for a while.

"I know it's a bad decision to go in the inlet where all the boat are" . I continue to see Kayakers play russian roulette in the Manasquan by either fishing the main boating channels or do other things like this video. It just blows my mind how often I see this occur.

I gave up on kayaks and bought a 14 foot vhull was tired of all the limitations not being able to stand ect.
