Description: "Kay Nielsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1886. He moved to London in 1911 but returned to his hometown in 1916. He worked in the theatre during World War I designing stage sets for the Theater Royal productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Aladdin. In 1924 he illustrated Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales and then in 1925 he illustrated Hansel and Gretel and other Stories From the Brothers Grimm. Later on during his life he created about twenty Arabian Nights paintings,
then he was called on by Walt Disney to do some work on Fantasia. He ended up doing the “Ave Maria” and the “Night on Bald Mountain” sequences before soon he was laid off. He died of poverty in 1957."

Saw his work for the first time a week ago in Pete Beards' Unsung Heroes of Illustration video series. The way he plays with perspective is his brilliance. Thank you for putting so much of his work in one place.
Thank you for collecting all these Nielsen illustrations together, and thank you for the brief history of his life. I saw some of his astounding pictures in a fairy tale book when I was a child, and remember being fascinated by their exaggerated style and detail. As an adult I found it difficult to find any books of his works in print. Finding your collection on KZread is a thrill.
One of my newest favorite painters

I can’t help but notice that some of Nielsens work is similar to artist Daisy Makeig Jones work, who designed for Wedgwood. She was of the same generation. I wonder who was copying who?
