It turns out it was not Nick Nurse's decision to have Kawhi guarding Giannis, but Kawhi's own request/demand...and he delivered Gold.

The help defense worked better when Kawhi was the primary defender. Siakam defended Giannis the most after Kawhi but Giannis could just bulldoze through Siakam.

@@omerali580 Thank you someone said this and apparently Siakam was the best defender on Giannis when that clearly wasn't the case not to mention Kawhi was injured early on in game 3 and still managed to guard Giannis. It's probably due to how Siakam done against Giannis in the regular season after seeing how Blake Griffin did against Giannis with basically one leg I knew Kawhi would be able to handle Giannis Giannis is not Lebron in Miami who Kawhi locked up. I knew Kawhi held back stated by himself just never knew he held back this much offensively/defensively the difference is huge

It's not like Gianni's was the only one getting double team. Milwaukee was doubling kawhi even outside of 3pt line that's how most of the other guys do their pts

Kawhi is just silent but he might actually be studying Giannis every before game. He doesn't have alot of steals in his stats but look at how Giannis's offense reacts. He either passes the ball or gets uncomfortable by the defense and gets forced to do something that isn't comfortable for him. He looks very intimidated with Kawhi that has a docile face and a silent personality. What's unbelievable is Kawhi actually doesn't move alot and uses his arms and his lower body to put Giannis in an uncomfortable position. Kawhi is such a great defender. Unbelievable.

Watching it in games u cant see throughly how he lockdown a player. But these cuts shows it. Its pretty scary he wouldnt even try to attack kawhi most of the time.. really a lockdown defensive specialist..

0:56 a great example of defensive awareness and being aware of the shot clock expiring.. That's what makes Kawhi different

Λ also his shooting mechanics are messed up you can tell from how he shoots his free throws. Shooting, ball handling, passing are skills he can be taught. He’ll conserve energy by getting these skills. Athleticism and High IQ are god given.

Λ I would think shooting touch can be muscle memory and not god given. There are people who couldn’t shoot who could shoot now 18-30 ft with training. With Giannis he’s like an athlete playing off of athleticism and size(god given) With him I think he has tons of energy with some skills he could use more efficiently. Skills will also help with his footwork as well probably put his IQ up a bit. With free throws like Lebron Giannis just has bad mechanics which can be changed through training. When his free throws gets better his jumper will easily improve due to it being the same mechanics.

Λ I would think it was muscle memory or I’m just gifted as well. I think touch can be easily trained just like with any other skill. With training your depth perception, tactile sensitivity and dexterity increases. Now some are just talented/gifted at it but that can be worked on. I’ve seen this from many players. Pro level to amateur. There are training methods that your body will adjust too in time. I’ve seen PGs in the league who didn’t have floaters but now it’s second nature due to training.

Giannis has no left drive. weak handles on his left which Kawhi made him go. notice Giannis' strong drive area is on his right which Kawhi didn't allow. that's why Giannis opted to pass a lot coz he couldn't drive much on his left.

Giannis plays within the system, which does not call for a lot of 1v1 isolations. Also, pay attention to the footage. You'll see Siakam, Ibaka and Gasol generally lurking around the paint waiting for Giannis. Total team effort

Giannis defiantly learned, worked hard and improved from this. But Kawhi (mostly) and the Raptors did a top notch of defending Giannis this series.

You think you could ever do some vids on jordan 92 and kobe's 08 defense in the Olympics? They both wanted to take the challenge of guarding the opposing team's best player.

Kawhi is one of the best defenders in the game and he's the reason why he gave Gianni those struggles. It is true the raptors played wall defense and had those elite rim protectors like Gasol and ibaka but the Lack of perimeter game from Gianni exposed him in the playoffs. He couldn't do anything against Kawhis great defense

Draymond a better team defender then Kawhi that's it in terms of Perimeter defence Kawhi is moderately better if you say significantly I won't disagree either. and Draymond doesn't guard the best player from what I've seen he usually roams around to help sought of like what Giannis does well Andre and Klay usually do the job of guarding the best player on the Perimeter.

No, Giannis overpowered them, but when Kawhi was on Giannis, he didn’t dare try to back him down or anything that’s the point, because Kawhi cut off his driving lanes and made him pass or do fancy dribble moves.

Can you do Grant Hill's defense during the 2010-11 season with the Suns? That season, he held down star players from a variety of positions such as Derrick Rose, Andre Miller, Kevin Durant, Amar'e Stoudemire, Blake Griffin, and Monta Ellis. He did all these when he was 37!! Too bad he was 4 votes short from getting into the all-defensive team that year when clearly he had more defensive impact than the likes of Kobe, etc.

They were winning in game 5 in the third quarter as well. But the adjustments were definitely needed. But I can't blame coach too much because what I said earlier

if stay healthy he will be top 5. he will be the goat of this era because steph and lebron gonna have less rings if he play healthy in his whole career. he can beat those two goats in this era. he can beat giannis, he beat jimmy, joel, and ben simmon in 2019 also. he beat a lot of player in their prime. but opportunity his health is the issue. he need more ring, season mvp maybe 2 mvp and he have chance to be in top 10 but from his accolades now he not even top 20 the list was so great to kick out but i get his ability to win i take him over most of the players in that top 20

One thing you'll actually notice is giannis is fine attacking Kawhi when help isnt there (for example at about 7:00 giannis is able to get good position and if it wasn't for a timely rotation by gasol that's a bucket), but the second the help shades he passes to the slightly open man which is what he should do, also giannis was straight up getting mugged too Kawhi rotated well and certainly didn't play bad defence but it was gasols early and perfect rotations that caused giannis the most problems

Qwikscopez I agree 100% but people seem to think kawhi shut him out. He has a lot of help behind him. This was a great defensive TEAM effort

The Raptors as a team played great defense on Giannis Kawhi didn't lock him down. Also, the few possessions Giannis guarded Kawhi he shut him down too, he should've been guarding Kawhi but Budenholzer made no adjustments

That collapse wall they used on Giannis is the perfect way to play him since they had no shooters on that team. This year they should shoot better

On the very FIRST clip u showed,kawhi played 0 initial defense on Giannis,but yet he gets credit as if he did? It was a mix of a lazy pass from Giannis & half hearted catch attempt by Middleton,NOTHING to do with kawhi. U just like the media running with false reality. I’ll finish the video though and see if you can get something right
