Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE Honest Review

It's my test and review of the Kawasaki Versys 1000 in the top SE version. I've been positively surprised by the bike and how well-made it is. The engine lacks the punch here and there but the balancing of the bike is phenomenal. As long as you don't change your speed in the corners. I also left one "easter egg" for you to find. Enjoy!

    Everyone who reviews this bike complains that it needs more power. My question is why? The bike is made for eating up a lot of miles in a comfortable riding position. Detuned engines typically last longer, produce less heat, and get better economy. It’s not a bike anyone would want to take to a track day so why not detune the motor? 120 HP is plenty of zip both in town and on the highways.

    My own personal answer to your question is that I load a bike up heavy for touring and I can feel the power deficit at that extra travelling weight. In other words, for me "enough" power isn't actually enough, there needs to be more to compensate for touring weight. The same with agility. I remember test riding a Yamaha Super Tenere a couple of years after I traded in my own ST, and was surprised at how the agility was acceptable while it was only carrying the rider, but remembered how the agility was non-existent when the bike was loaded up.

    @@craigfinnegan8534 I think it’s a good call that manufacturers detune engines when the intended use of the bike will be long distance touring. Triumph did this a while back with the Rocket III. They made a touring version (which I owned) that had bags, windscreen, floor boards, etc. It made 50 less HP than the Rocket but was tuned to make its torque at lower RPM. The result was an engine that was right in the sweet spot at highway speeds. It’s hard to think that 120 HP motorcycle is considered underpowered. I have a Versys 1000 now and while I don’t tour 2 up, I have loaded it down for some trips and I’ve never felt it was down on power… but the way I ride would probably be considered slow and boring by most.

    @@Richaag That's a legitimate viewpoint. The nice thing is that these days there's a bike for everybody. I do question guys who buy powerful sportbikes for the ego appeal, but who am I to judge? I ride an "adventurized" Yamaha FJ-09 now and love it's punchy engine on local rides. But my next bike will be the new Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer for the shaft drive, huge fuel tank and again, the power delivery. I just wouldn't feel safe (ironically) on anything too mellow. But I do love the mellow aspect of riding also.

    I'd add my two cents by saying that it may indeed not feel as exciting when accelerating compared to other competitors - this matters if it's something you enjoy like I do. The second thing would be also that we know that competitors can make much more HP out of the same or similar displacement so it makes us question Kawasaki's decision. I think that these might be an explanation.

    @@VToldsMotoShow I have questioned for a long time why some manufacturers keep power delivery tame on certain models. As far as I can tell it's simply because that's what a lot of riders want. In my local area I'm surprised at how many riders tell me they want less power, not more, for their next bike. It's not something I relate to at all, even though I ride very responsibly.

    Very good review. I agree that the windscreen adjustment is nothing short of crap and the seat is not the best, but overall I've done 300 miles in a day in relative comfort. You compare the Versys with the BMW and the Triumph but the one factor nobody ever looks at is reliability. Check out the manufacturer reliability figures and the 4 Japanese manufacturers are always at the top of the list with premium manufacturers such as BMW, Ducati and KTM waaaaay down the list which for premium bikes is appalling especially given their premium service and repair costs. As for price, My Versys 1000SE was much cheaper (around £5k) than a new BMW GS or S1000XR of similar spec so all in all I'm very happy that I chose the Versys.

  • @VToldsMotoShow

    @VToldsMotoShow

    I'm glad to see that you're happy with your Versys. I believe that Japanese bikes may overall be more reliable but it's also true that it's not very often commented on by any reviewers. Of course in a few days it may not make much sense to judge that unless anything actually happens within that timeframe to the bike. But as long as there aren't any repeatedly occurring malfunctions in a certain bike, I'm not sure that I'd pay so much attention to it. There are some known weak points of Japanese bikes like a V-Strom (former V-Strom 1000 owner) and sooner or later these things break and force you to put the bike into a van or onto a trailer and drag it to the service. So it always makes me wonder whether it really is possible to properly analyse to draw conclusions. What I know out of renting bikes is that Ducatis are often broken and with KTM bikes, so many owners confirm issues here and there. BMW is very popular, it's plenty of bikes and every now and then something somewhere breaks. I'm not sure I'd pay soooo much attention to is but of course if there was a 'reliable' way of judging bikes in this area, it would be super important to me myself too. I'm just afraid that there isn't anything else than people telling people.

    Greetings from Las Vegas & LOVE your honest reviews. I appreciate that you are the ONLY major reviewer that evaluates heat management in your reviews. I live in the Nevada desert & it's REALLY hot here for 5 months out of the year, so excessive heat is a deal killer for me. Unfortunately much of this heat is coming from the catalytic converters & all the new Euro 5 standards are making this situation more of an issue. It's almost unfair to evaluate a bike's heat management until it gets an aftermarket full system cat delete 'off road/racing only' exhaust. Looking forward you your review of the 2024 GSX-S1000GX & updated 2024 Katana~ hopefully you can get your hands on them. Thank you~

    Thanks for mentioning that and I'm glad that you like the videos. Heat can be a pain in the... However, if the reason could be narrowed down to exhaust-related parts, then this may indeed be fixed. Let's hope that this is the case but if not, then there are also some thermal insulations like tapes and shields that people sometimes try to use if they suffer from engine/exhaust heat. Better to make sure what the source is but I worry it's not that straightforward.

    @@VToldsMotoShow Absolutely, but I must say~ heat is not a new problem. I worked as a salesman for Cycle City Harley Davidson/Kawasaki in the 90s & when the 'new' ZX11 first came out, the eat for the engine was absolutely miserable. We had to remove most of the inner/lower fairings just to make it rideable. As for now~ the two bikes that don't have heat problems are the Yamaha 900 Tracer & the Honda Transalp750. I think that there will be a Yamaha Tenere 900 for 2025~ I'll wait for that.

    Thanks and I'm glad that you like the review. You're pretty tall and taller than me but it should be easy to just go and sit on one of those at a dealership even without taking it for a test ride. If you can, then you'll get the best feel though, so I'd recommend that. On the other hand, you're not over 2 meters which is where the trouble starts, so I don't think that there's a reason to be worried. But if you're really huge and simply need space or like big motorcycles, then there will be a significant difference between Versys 1000 and BMW R1250GS Adventure and Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally. KTM bikes are tall but not huge in terms of width etc. They still feel manageable - more than the listed two or even an Africa Twin 1100. If you like the Versys, then maybe a Triumph Tiger 1200 with its 3-cylinder inline engine would be interest to you?

    NIce review - We have 25K on our 19 Versys SE and we love it. This is my 26th motorcycle since I started riding 40 years ago. The bike is a good sport touring bike. It fits us for 2UP riding. I see people talking about Chain vs Shaft. I have ridden both and really it is no big deal. I like the lighter weight of a chain, but a shaft driven or chain driven bike does not sway me from buying one. It i s a "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" machine. I miss the Power of the C-14, but do not miss the weight of that machine. If you are looking for a good sport touring bike, then the Versys should be on your short list. Thanks again for the review. Good question that has no ideal answer. However, here - regardless of your height because I cannot imagine how you'd fit on the bike and you've got to test this yourself - I think that Versys 1000 may be a significantly better choice than some other adventure bikes because it's got lower handlebar which tends to give more control in this particular case (overall - it's not always automatically the case). I'm not sure if it wouldn't be too low for you so even putting this aside, Versys has two things that will certainly help and one that's not so great. The good things are: 1) great control and precision when riding at low speeds starting from a standstill, so you're the least likely to put it down and fall; 2) super smooth power delivery of the engine from the lowest RPM, which should never surprise you thanks to that. What's not that great is that when leaning into the corners, it's not reacting in a neutral way to brakes and throttle and that can be potentially dangerous if you attempt to ride through a corner too fast and try to brake. The bike will try to straighten up while you actually need to lean more rather than less. So if you're not planning to ride on some fast twisty roads, it may not be an obstacle. If you keep that in mind and know how to react (this would qualify you as experienced), then also no worries. Now you've got to balance these out the way you feel will work for you best. There are always some pros and cons for every bike.

    Hi! I totally get it and would never now buy a motorcycle without riding it first. Knowing how much they can differ and how enjoyable some can be while others - even for the same money - may completely not suit us, I believe that this is the only right way. Funny thing is that I was struggling a lot here with KTM to find me a bike while Kawasaki has plenty of Versys 1000 units across their dealerships. I'll be getting as 1290 Super adventure in 4 days but I'm told that there's no way that they'll have a 1290 Super Duke GT. I'm fascinated by it but probably Super Adventure would suit my preferences better anyway. What a weird policy of manufacturers (it's often not even dealers' choice!) to not provide "samples" of their products before buying. All the best and I hope that you're happy with SDGT.

    @@VToldsMotoShow thanks for taking time to reply. Ho yes! Today, after some 6.000kms of riding my bike I can say that it is more reliable than the general opinion says (didn’t experienced it in the rain yet, only in the cold environment and it seemed like home for this bike). The electronics, in the first couple of thousand Kms, felt at the beginning, quite a sensible spot, although the system appears to have an auto restore program that when you restart it, everything comes alive and well, after a while. And beyond the first 2000 kms the general failure messages stoped to pop out. The engine is the same of its taller sister (which is more appealing to riders in general for its all around characteristics bike). I mainly ride on road and quickly understood that the big heavy off road bikes were not the best choice for me. I now ride on longer journeys the BMW 1250 RT, with a pillion and some luggage, it’s perfect. My SDGT is equipped with the side panniers and I mostly ride it alone, for fun and going to work on a powerful and safe bike. It really enhances the pleasure of daily riding a bike! The stock windshield is a little short but I got a smokescreen from Puig that bettered the protection and added beauty to the bike as it is a very well designed part, specially made for the SDGT and now I’m fully served for some time, I hope. Did.a few 600 miles.trip solo. To be honest I am used.to a lot more power and torque (had a zzr1200 for 8 years, rode 84k miles.with it) for a 650 the power is ok but not great, it run out of steam quickly. I'm not going to keep it for too long to get something that will fit my need better. The 650 is a fun "little" bike.

    Hi, I am about 5'8 with 29" inside leg. I bought a new versys 1000 last year. My local kawasaki dealer offered a suspension lowering kit option which was quite cheap. The lowering kit was made by Lust Racing and was recommended and supplied by my local kawa dealer. There are I believe 3 different lowering levels and I had a 1" lowering kit fitted and can get both feet flat on the ground. My only complaint is the uncomfortable seat.

    I basically like the Versys 1000 - it seems like a solid, capable sport-tourer (not adventure bike). I won't get down on it's looks because I believe V-Told that it looks better in realtime. I also won't criticize it's lack of tech because I'm a "keep it simple" type of person. But Kawasaki put too many limits on it as a touring machine... -Not shaft drive. -Fuel tank too small (5.5 gals). -Too heavy. -A little underpowered. -Awkward even in light off-road situations.

  • @dreadnought1984

    I own one of these. -Not shaft drive - Doesn't matter and keeps it light. I haven't had to adjust the chain in 14K miles. It gets lubed and waxed every 2K. It's fine. - Fuel tank - I get about 220 miles between fill ups, more than my bladder and thirst lasts. - Too Heavy - It's pretty light for a touring bike. It feels very light when you're sitting on it - Underpowered - Its ~120HP? I've never thought I needed more power than it has, and it's flat/predictable which is perfect for 2 up. It lofts the wheel in first (and second if you have a pillion) -Awkward off road - It's fine on dirt and gravel roads. It's not an Adventure bike. My only real complaint is that you can't set the cruise higher than 85MPH.

    Thanks for sharing your thought, Craig. I think that it could have a lot of potential if Kawasaki would make it more affordable. Price-wise it competes with "the best"/the most expensive bikes but somehow comes with less stuff or stuff that's less advanced (including performance). One more comment would be that I really wouldn't be bothered with its weight. It's like with BMW R1250GS which also carries a large number of kilograms, but you really don't feel it once you start riding it. Yeah, in most everyday situations, Versys 1000 shouldn't annoy you with its weight. Cheers!

    @@VToldsMotoShow I believe you on the Versys' weight factor, but my first bike was a beastly Yamaha Super Tenere, which I traded in for the beautifully light, agile FJ-09 (aka Tracer 900) only 6 months later, and since then I've become very cynical about any bike that even LOOKS heavy! Anyways, the reviews of the new Tiger 1200 (including yours) have already reassured me that I can get a shaft drive, 8 gal tank and superior tech and still not deal with too much weight. I agree with you on the pricing problem with the Versys, although it's more likely to be discounted than it's competitors are. Still, regarding both the Versys 1000 and the VStrom 1050, I can't help looking at the Africa Twin Adventure Sports and seeing something much better in the Honda, especially off-road. I'll test ride the Versys and the AT, but the Tiger 1200 looks like my next bike. I'm tempted to ask you how things are in Poland these days, but I don't want to overload you!

    The Kawasaki is the best value at the moment at $17K AUD on special. Triumph & BMW don't discount much with the Big Flagships $27K AUD base price. Suzuki are a bit different as they hover round $15-17K but it all depends on the dealership and how much stock. The best sellers are KTM 390 Adv, BMW G310 GS & Versys X300 and it's because of the $8-9K price tag. Small bikes still outsell everything here. (the other thing to note Suzuki have dropped the DRZ400 & DR650 here they were good sellors)

    I don't understand why some reviewers have to put "honest" in their titles. Are they implying that the other reviewers arent being honest, or are they focussing on the negatives instead of the positives? Or are they just using the marketing technique of used car salesmen?

  • @VToldsMotoShow

    @VToldsMotoShow

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, in social media nowadays "honest" is something that you don't see often. Most reviews come from journalists who live off of them and if they don't play the strategically beneficial game with brands, they simply don't get invited to ride motorcycles or drive cars. If they don't have access, they cannot earn, so there's no way to not be in their pocket. If you're dependant on them, your review cannot be honest as it's influenced by external factors. Also, if you get invited to an expensive presentation-holiday-abroad, or get a bike for a week for free, or get paid to feature it in Social Media, then of course you'll want to at least say your thank you by making a positive review. I've been there too. But on the other side... And it's terrible as no one can trust anyone online anymore. So I've decided to rent the bikes on my own just like any other customer would and not inform anyone that I'm about to make a review. I believe that this qualifies as fair and honest. I also don't own a competing bike to any of the ones that I ride and review. I hope that this explains it better as I believe that it's SUPER IMPORTANT. And also rare.

    @@VToldsMotoShow In the long run, your approach is the right one - staying independent so you're free to be fully honest, not semi-honest. The main reason is that most motorcyclists are more straightforward, independent-minded, and realistic than the average KZread viewers. Plus, motorcycles are just too expensive to mislead buyers with - it's an ethical issue affecting viewer's finances. Speaking for myself, I can assure you the reviewers who keep everything (suspiciously) positive all the time lose my trust and my views. They also bore me, since the most extreme among them seem like they're just giving a glorified sales pitch. The only counterpoint I can think of is that the personality of the presenter counts for a lot among viewers. But you're doing fine there also.
