    Great review! I own a 20’ 650. It was the bike I started riding on also. I’ve been told that I would want to upgrade it in the future. No. This bike is pretty much all you need for everyday street riding. No one needs to go 130mph or more on the roads. They’ll never use the power, or need it. The 650 is a keeper!

    honestly, I bought the 2022 one on a whim simply because I didnt want to start on a standard 300/400 bike knowing id out grow it fast due to my habits with hobbies I love. I won't lie, 6 months in and I would bet i am ready for a ninja 1000/zx 10r or even a h2. But this is still a bike I would consider keeping when i upgrade as it is truly amazing and perfect.

    Thanks for sharing! One thing that I would say is, I'm not sure that you've "outgrown" your 650, I think you just want more speed. I think we end up confusing new riders when we use the word outgrow. People outgrow 150cc bikes, but there are plenty of people who are perfectly satisfied with 650 bikes, and even 400cc sport bikes. And believe me, I've seen people that can take a 400 and whip a litre bike around the track! Just my two cents on the "outgrowing" a bike theory.

    Happy to help! I used to own the 650 engine in a Versys that I had for years. It's a GREAT engine to do everything. The 400 would be a bike that I'd choose if you valued nimble, lightweight handling over anything else. Not sure if that's a complete enough explanation for you, but hopefully it adds to your information, and helps a little bit.

    I went from a Z400 to a Ninja 650 for a few reasons: No handlebar extenders, comfier seat, comfier overall riding position, and didn't have to keep changing gears all the time (i.e., more torque and power). Now, if Kawasaki were to put the ZX6R engine on the Ninja 650...I'd buy that bike in a heartbeat!

  • @PeterLoweOne

    @PeterLoweOne

    Жыл бұрын

    Honestly, I would never recommend an ECU remap. Mostly because that's not specific enough. A mild tune may be fine, but you could go crazy and begin to negatively effect reliability, or create other issues. Bikes like the Ninja 1000SX have multiple Rider Modes which are effectively factory ECU reprogramming, so it's not something that can't be done properly, but it's a wild world, and you really have to be careful with what you do. Also, tweaking it to be more aggressive can feel great on dry pavement, but could make it unpredictable in wet weather etc. Lots of variables for individual owners to consider, so that's why I, personally stay away from making the recommendation.

    The clutch lever is not for reach. That is what the Showroom guys told me too but it is wrong. it is actually changing the bite(i guess thats what u call it?) of the clutch. For example, if you are on first gear, and you just release your clutch slowly without giving gas, the bike will start to move(and stall if you fully release it without gas). That adjustment tells the bike when to move. from what I have tried, 1 moves the bike immediately as you start releasing your clutch, 3 starts moving it only you have released the clutch halfway etc.

  • @PeterLoweOne

    @PeterLoweOne

    Жыл бұрын

    So... I think we're both right. The adjustment does adjust the overall reach of the clutch lever, The side effect is that the bite point will effectively change. It doesn't physically change the bite point, but because the lever is in a different position relative to the starting point of the pull of the clutch cable, the engagement point changes. So you're not wrong, but the reason that I say that it changes the reach, is because if you look at it, it does. Those adjustments do change how far away, or how close, the lever is when you initially pull it.

  • @ragzzytv

    @ragzzytv

    Жыл бұрын

    @@PeterLoweOne ahh! that is interesting. I think you are right. I felt the bite more than the reach because I always wear gloves and I think I didn't feel the reach much because of it. I will try with bare hands this weekend and let you know. Great video btw :)

Love the style, the versatility, but given that I'm 6'6'' with 38'' inseam I'm concerned that it would be a bit cramped, especially for the knees behind the fairings and at the widening on the tank. I don't have the opportunity really to try it where I live. The only bike I got to ride was the Yamaha MT-07 in driving school, and it was fine size-wise for me. No issues. I see you have some great advice below... the only thing that I would say is don't rule out the Versys 650. It's great for taller riders, and is probably more sport capable than your skill level could handle (in other words, you'll corner, brake, and drive just as fast on the Versys as you likely would on the Ninja) so it's something worth considering if you can adapt to a different looking bike.

  • @File001

    @File001

    @@PeterLoweOne Than you for the suggestion! I was originally looking into naked bikes, as I'm not really into more aggressive sport or super-sport category as a beginner (I have neither the need nor the roads where I live to ride fast, and I probably wouldn't fit any of them, anyway). But Ninja 650 caught my eye as kind of in-between. Not too powerful for a beginner, still fairly upright seating position, but with more wind protection than a naked. And also the looks, not gonna lie... I only had the opportunity to ride Yamaha MT-07 in driving school, and it was comfortable for me. I'm not really into adventure bikes, unfortunately, so if Ninja 650 doesn't work for me, I'll go with some naked.

    Just a quick update, in case anyone was wondering. I ended up getting a 2009 Yamaha XJ6n. I found a great deal on it, well maintained, reasonable mileage, reasonable price - couldn't pass up the opportunity. I actually find it comfortable to ride. I don't feel cramped at all, though I'm not as upright as a shorter person would be on it. But if anything, I prefer that seating position as I feel it gives me more control over the bike. Last Saturday I went on a 250 km ride with few guys, a whole day thing. Seat got a bit uncomfortable after a while, toes went numb (I forgot to stretch my feet from time to time during the ride), but with regular stops, no major issues, no back pain. I'm happy with it.

    The mirrors being more forward on the Ninja and the fairing breaking the wind a bit are two functional advantages over the Z in my opinion. I have mirrors on the handle bars on my current bike and it takes quite a lot of effort to use the mirrors when leaning into the wind on the highway. I’d be thrilled to own either but if I ever buy it will be the Ninja, just for the added ease of use and comfort of the mirror position and windbreak from the fairing. It’s a nice practical bike that seems like it would be easy to live with.

  • @PeterLoweOne

    @PeterLoweOne

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm of the opinion that you can use just about any bike for touring. The difference with the Ninja 650 and the Ninja 400 is the 400 doesn't really give you an alternative bike for touring, so you need to figure out how to attach luggage etc. (lots of options, not a big deal) and you could do the same with the Ninja 650, but the Ninja 650 and Versys 650 share an engine, and the Versys is a better touring bike which often has plenty of sporting capabilities for most people. So while the Ninja 650 might be a better touring bike than the 400 because of the engine, the same engine is available in a better touring bike. In summary. If you want the Ninja 650 for touring, strongly consider the Versys as it's an incredible do everything (on the street) bike.

    It's always tough for me to help people choose a bike based on their size. I know tall people who ride sport bikes, but you'd have to make sure that you're comfortable on it. Most taller people also weigh a little more than shorter people, so having something with an adjustable preload on the rear is always handy, so that you can retain the handling. One bike that I would recommend for taller people, that I feel pretty confident in saying that you'll find comfortable is the Kawasaki Versys 650. If you're just beginning, it will offer all the "sport" that you'll need, and you'll definitely be comfortable. It's got the preload adjustable rear suspension, (and adjustable front suspension) and with it's seating position, I think it might be the perfect mix of comfort for your size, and sport for your riding style.

I'm looking forward to the next few weeks and months as we begin to see a whole crop of bikes that I haven't been able to review yet. Feel free to subscribe, I've got a lot planned for this channel!

    Great video. I just got my endorsement. Im about 5 feet 7 inches. Looking for a confortable bike as I continue to learn. Im not interested in going to the tract or 150 mph on interstate. I am a little concerned with out growing the bike, even though im not interested in going fast. Would you say a 400 or 650 is better for me?

    Hello. It's always tough for me to judge for other people, or be able to tell what's best for them. Here's what I will say. The top speed of each of these bikes is around 120mph or so, and in that sense, they'll both be plenty fast for you. The 650 will get there a little quicker, while the 400 has a lightweight feel that you can't replicate on a bigger, heavier bike. Both are fun. I would say that the 400 might even be a little MORE fun, but it depends on what you call fun. I used to own a Versys 650, and I've called that the perfect engine for the street. It has more than enough power for most people, and it set up to be fun on city streets, country highways, and major interstate highways. So I don't have a favourite between these two, but that information may steer you one way or the other. I hope it helps a little.

    It's definitely something that you would want to stand across. It's going to be a reach for you. Many Kawasaki bikes have an option for a lower seat. It sounds like you want a sport bike, but the Vulcan S is a cruiser that shares the same engine. It might be something worth considering if you just want to get into a motorcycle with this type of engine. The Vulcan S has multiple settings for the handlebars, pegs, and seat where it can suit a wide range of riders. Not saying that this or another sport bike in the lineup won't work, but you'd want to sit on them for yourself to be sure that you're comfortable.

    It depends on what you want in a bike. Honestly, I think you'll learn to be a better rider on the Ninja 650. That engine is perfectly suited to the streets. You can progress to driving it hard, it's comfortable, and I think it teaches you to get faster by learning to ride better, instead of just twisting the throttle.

    I've had a few taller people reach out to me lately, and it's always tough for me to judge if you'd be comfortable on these bikes. I'm 6 feet tall. I think 6'8" would be at the upper end of being comfortable on this. The Versys 650 is the bike that I'd recommend in this class if you want something fun to drive that may fit a larger person more easily. So if this didn't fit you, that's the first place I'd look. I've owned that bike and it's plenty sporty to drive, but the seating position may work better for you.

    From a rider's standpoint, they're the exact same. They each have a slightly different feel, but neither one is going to be harder or easier to ride. Some new riders prefer the little bit wider bars of the Z650, but if you like the style of this one, it's going to be almost the exact same as far as rating them on a scale of difficulty. So, in short, pick the one that speaks to you, and get that one. You'll be happy.

    For many bikes like this in the Kawasaki lineup, the top speeds are over 200 km/h (120 MPH) but it's less about top speeds... if you want top speeds, you want a litre bike. The real difference is in acceleration. Each bike offers a different feel in acceleration. Where you'll notice the extra engine size in Kawasaki bikes is in the mid to high speed passing power. With each larger engine comes a noticeable advantage in passing power.
