If I were rich, I would buy each of these workers a safety gas mask. How ironic this place became a tourist attraction, all the tourists get to wear the safety mask and yet all these workers are photograph objects with no safety mask :'(

Just went there couple of days ago. It's an amazing place and the miners are incredible people. They sacrifice their health and risk their lives for the sake of a few dollars per load. They did not wince and worked so intimately with the noxious gas without any protection at all, carrying at least 40kg on their shoulders up a treacherous and steep trek, few times a day. My guide who was a former miner showed me the deep scars on his shoulders from carrying such loads over a decade. Utmost respect to these lovely people.

I wanted to watch some footage of sulfur miners, but just about the whole thing is footage of a camera crew. They didn't need to go all the way to Indonesia just to spend 40 minutes filming each other.

What did I just watch? I went there couple of weeks ago and saw how these people work. How they climb the volcano with their carts, walk down the crater, mine, load, climb up, and go all the way down with sulfur and lazy tourists on their carts. The process is horrible and amazing at the same time. And I wanted to show a video to my family, and I found one by BBC - about how camera was broken and fixed and broken again and fixed again and then broken and a different camera used. And the miners are somewhere in the background. Who cares about some camera issues? What is the value of this video?

So... I’ve been watching many videos on the *Blue Flames* that come from the burning sulfur in that volcano... and I didn’t see any clips of the flames in this video. Maybe they went there on a day that the flames didn’t flare up, and so changed the focus of the video? Just seems strange, every other YT video I can find on this volcano is specifically about it being one of the few places on earth that has natural blue flames, and yet this fact is seemingly absent from this BBC doc.

I went to Kawah Ijen in 1993 when no body had heard of it let alone knew where it was. It was a hard hike up through pristine jungle. I got caught a couple of times in the crater by sulphur clouds and it stung my lungs. It was impossible to breath. I couldn't imagine working there every day digging out sulphur. The small piece I got was enough for me. The crew should have at least left their respirators to these local men whose health was clearly poor and even if they didn't they should have arranged for some to be sent to them after with lots of filter changes. To not have done would have been to profit from others misery and could be interpreted as exploiting their subjects to make good television. Clearly the BBC crew and production company are all well paid. It was the least they could have done. It might just have meant these men lived a little longer than the short lives they were likely to have as a result of being exposed to poisonous gases on a daily basis. Shame on the BBC if they didn't provide them with proper gas masks.

I guess the difference is when the “primitives” die at age 55 while the “civilized” live to he 80-90. Sounds more like a warped view of being a macho man, huffing literal poison so you don’t look “weak”. Seems like something a weak man would do. “Watch me choke on sulfur dioxide so you don’t think I’m weak.” I think, if these workers were my dad or son or husband or whatever, it would be a whole lot cooler if they worried less about looking weak, and remainded alive for more years of their life instead. Being accustomed to toxic gas isn’t strength, it’s stupidity. Or at best, desperation.

"Give them your masks?" Do any of you have any idea how expensive that would be? First off, the masks cost about $1100 USD each. Second, the filter capsules have to be changed every 4 hours, and they cost about $65 - EACH (there are two of them). So you give them the mask, and four hours later, what then? It would cost them a week's work to earn one filter. Quit your virtue signalling and be real.
