Hurricane Ida was one of Louisiana's worst hurricanes to ever hit the state, evoking the memories of Hurricane Katrina for some. This 150 MPH high-end Category 4 Hurricane made landfall on the morning of August 29th, 2021, the 16th anniversary of Katrina. This hurricane would kill over 100 people and cause over $75 billion in damages before dissipating in the Atlantic Ocean on September 5th after making a surprise visit to much of the Northeastern US. I go and do a deep dive into how Ida got so destructive and what contributed to such a disaster. Hope you enjoy!

I remember driving down I-10 through Louisiana in May 2021 and it was still clearly battered from the storms of 2020.

That’s crazy man. Only 3 months later was Ida and it put Louisiana in an even worse position than before.

I'll never forget the long flight hours in the Blackhawk performing rescues in NOLA for Katrina. That affected me more than the prior 18 months in combat. Thank you for mentioning the Louisiana National Guard. We also had many other States that stepped up and helped, thank you to them as well.

You guys played a massive role in recovery efforts down there after Ida, especially in that extreme heat. Thank you for your service, and I hope to see you here some more for my weather updates and documentaries. Stay safe

Born and raised in New Orleans. Been through them all going back to Betsy. Katrina devastation was the result of an engineering failure as it did not score a worst case hit on the city. All my life I have been told the New Orleans apocalypse will be a Cat 5 following a path from the Gulf up the path of the Mississippi River.

It definitely is at one of the worst places geographically to be at due to the threat of hurricanes as New Orleans is surrounded on three sides by the Mississippi River, the Gulf, and Lake Pontchatrain. Ida thankfully narrowly avoided that area of Louisiana, but the outer eye wall still hit New Orleans and caused a power outage for 10 days in extreme heat

@@PatsPathPredictor Yep, I was there. After going through so many hurricanes I have mastered the art of sheltering in place (down to water storage for flushing the toilets when the power that controls water pressure goes out). My house looks like a disaster preparedness warehouse. We now have to consider rapid intensification when calling for early evacuations. This may result in false alarms and evacuation fatigue. Sheltering in place may become the most practical option for many. “You loot, we shoot” has become a common warning.

Great vid but I thought you didn't talk all that much about the impacts in southeast louisiana. Honestly that eyewall replacement cycle was a good thing for Louisiana as it kept those cat 4 winds pretty localized. Outer eyewall hardly had hurricane conditions at all. Truly an interesting storm though, and in a few locations, mind-bogglingly intense! Particularly port fourchon and vicinity. Really for a cat 4, winds really didn't impress me in Houma and Raceland where most of the chasers stayed, but in some of the small bayou towns they sure did. That tornado outbreak and flooding in the northeast was surely something to remember too.

The ERC actually made things way worse. New Orleans got hit by the outer eye wall and their power went out. Outer eye wall had 100 MPH winds in that.

@@PatsPathPredictor in a few gusts on the SW side of the city ~100-120mph. downtown NOLA got lower gusts. Still actually destroyed a few homes and caused considerable damage though. But dude believe me it was really nothing compared to what the areas that got that inner eyewall had at the shore got.
