I enjoy this music because it is much more 'primal' than the stuff you hear today. I dont understand the words, but I dont need to. Its all in the 'feeling' of the music; something that I think is being lost today. I applaud Kati Ran for making an effort to preserve this art form.

Nearly every day I listen to L.E.A.F.'s album LYS. The wonderful arrangements of traditionals from the North and the beautiful new material accompany me through my working hours and fill our house. Though the old North-Finnish rite "Suurin" has not yet empowered me to physically change form, the track has many times abducted my conciousness to where my mind and soul feel at home. And now, Kati has provided a scenery to fit that destination. This breathtaking visual work of art offers a mesmerizing representation of the meaning of the lyrics. I am very impressed, captivated and felt obliged to share it everywhere I could.

No one Nordic band or solo artist is a holy entity onto themselves,- not Wardruna, not Eivør, not Tyr, not Nightwish, not Amon Amarth, not Skáld, not Dimmu Borgir, - nobody,- they do not hold copyrights to the ancestry and heritage of an entire region of about six different countries and the common culture traits these countries share,- nor the right to artistic expression of that ancestry and that culture in solely their way,- not even if there are similarities in the various chosen forms of that artistic expression...! I´m a Scandinavian metalhead and the bond and lineage to this modern day expression af ancient themes is direct and not even under discussion,- this is as metal as it gets and not one distorted guitar in sight,- awesome! Kati Ran...... thank you!

they are worthy followers of that ancient tradition, there is no such things as "owner of tradition" tradition is performed, is done, is practiced, is song, or just will die. When tradition has died, copyright is useless, and revival is very difficult. I do not fully understand your post. tradition also cannot be performed as a heritage in a untouched way. time has gone and the artist from today are totaly free to take the known parts of past and add their ingredients to it. Maybe we do not disagree. but I want to emphasize: there is no copyright on tradition. "copyright" is a capitalistic 20th century issue, isnt' it ?

  • @ulfdanielsen6009

Being a Scandinavian artist, actor and metal guitarist myself my post is in part a reaction to a trend- also among ourselves- about doing things the " right" or the " wrong" way. There are different styles,- and different ways of interpreting the same foundation,- no " correct" single way,- so calling various artists for for instance " Wardruna Copycats" etc. for expressing themselves in the same style and genre of music as perhaps a more well known outfit than yourself is kind of ridiculous,- yet this has been said of Kati,- and other also Scandinavian artists,- even as late as in this comment section! The entire Norse Pagan, Vikingr, Ancient Folk scene is a construct in itself,- NOBODY,- knows what the actual music sounded like as the earliest written musical snippets we have are from the Middle Ages ( "Drømte mig en drøm i nat") ca. mid century of the 1200rds.,- some two hundred years after the Vikingr period ended. Personally I consider the entire region of Iceland and the Faroe Islands in the west over Scandinavia and Finland down over The Baltics and northern Poland, over Friesland in North Germany, over The Benelux and finally over the Netherlands as the northern region of Europe, and though not Scandinavian this entire region was in close contact with the original Scandinavnians and their cultures intermingled with the Scandinavian cultures,- so to my mind anybody from this region could actually with some sense express themselves in the "Norse Pagan / Vikingr " modern day folk style and not have to worry about whether or not they were doing it in the " right" or "wrong" way,- so yes, basically, we are in agreement.

I had a dream like this. I was running uphill in waist-deep snow and there were abnormally large black wolves chasing me. Three of them. The trees were black and lifeless. There were no leaves and the sky was overcast. Off in the distance behind me there was a pale woman with long dark hair woman wearing a black hood. Just as the wolves were closing in and I was getting tired I turned to look at her and she raised her hand and the wolves didn't rip me to shreds, as if she were controlling them.

Song is very beautiful. I watched it about 30 times before, and I really liked the sound of "swedish" or "nerwegian" language in it ))) Then read the comments and found out that it meant to be finnish :) Well, for finns that doesn't sound like finnish at all, thats why we've written some critics. But be sure, we like this song, otherwise we would say nothing :) Finns don't speak much... especially in cases when something is too bad to discuss ))))

I couldn't tell what they were saying even when I'm a finn but it's extremely okay, they don't speak finnish as a native so it's understandable and I'm honored. And in the lyrics in the description has a tiny mistake, a wolf is written susi in finnish, suusi means your mouth.

I dont know what it is but every language from Scandinavia just sounds magical. Ancient. Wise. The instruments used by traditional musicians playing this kind of music are very powerful as well. I'm from the Netherlands myself and alot of the pronunciations sound the same as Dutch. And although I usually listen to any kind of traditional music, the stuff you guys make up there in the far north keeps mesmerizing me.

Michael Koelewijn you are probably already aware of this band but if you like this music i highly recommend you check out wardruna if you havent heard them before, their music is amazing, its downright hypnotizing. their music actually inspired me to start learning the language so i could understand what they are singing.

Most likely because she hasn't been involved with a number of TV shows yet, but that's just a guess. I love how the musicians all help each other on their works. I'm sure as Heilung grows in popularity, so will Kati.
