I did gymnastics for five years. One afternoon, I got to practice a little late. I was eating a Snickers bar because I missed lunch. One of the trainers came up to me and grabbed the Snickers out of my hands, and started screaming at me that "eating like a pig must have been more important to me than practicing". Everyone stopped what they were doing. We were all terrified of her because this was an everyday occurence. If we got scared on the parallel bars, we got screamed at until we cried, and then we got screamed at for being childish. I was fucking nine! I loved doing gymnastics and ballet, but the coaches were really abusive. No child deserves to he treated like that. NOBODY deserves to be treated like that.

Look, this is a physical sport where form meets function both technically and esthetically. The pro standards reject ballerinas for being too tall and models being too short etc….Hopefully she can overcome this issue and come to terms. agree that form meets function in elite level sport, but the rules for form are being rewritten in gymnastics, as well as all other female competitive sports. Once upon a time, tennis players looked like Martina Navratilova. And then along came the very muscular Serena Williams. Misty Copeland has an atypical bust size for ballet. Nina Derwael is unusually tall for a gymnast. I believe that coaches and peers need to curtail their archaic ways of thinking because she defeated Simone Biles looking this way. It obviously didn't affect her performance.

@@avayu2289 If you're telling a young evolving girl to essentially starve herself you're putting her at serious risk of complications and even death. I agree form is important but there's a difference between being fat and growing due to hormones and puberty. Your hips get wider and your chest gets bigger. It's science. No amount of starving yourself is going to change your body's natural process. And add muscle to that and it makes them look big but they are healthy and fit. The expectation to be dainty and slim is just not possible.

Well that’s your parents fault. Unless you or whoever wants to be a winner and have no issue with training to become a champion you know as a gymnast what it takes to win. If you just want to have fun there are teams and places you can go for that atmosphere. The problem I see is the parents that want to live their lives through their kids and pushing them while never asking them if this is what they want. Parents are the reason it’s getting almost impossible to get umpires and referees for kids sports. They’re fed up with being demeaned and threatened because of calls they make. It’s not worth it.

It is so wild to me that coaches in sports like gym think that negative abuse makes gymnasts stronger than positive reinforcement and care. People need to be built up and those strong foundations help them to become great athletes. If you are being torn down by coaches and support people and even other athletes, you will collapse under pressure because you no longer think you're worth enough to stand tall and true. Once you lose faith in yourself you will never succeed, and it breaks my heart that there are coaches who tear down their students, and kill the faith in themselves and the joy that came from doing the sport for themselves, instead of other people. I appreciate those like Katelyn Ohashi speaking out about this sort of thing because how can we expect anyone, let alone gymnasts, to flourish when they are simultaneously being taught to hate their bodies and to think of themselves as living for some external goal from someone else, instead of living for themselves and putting their own goals and happiness first? It's why many people also think the most courageous thing Simone Biles did was to put her own health (physical and mental) instead of sacrificing it to the dais of gymnastics.

I completely understand how she feels. I am a cheerleader who’s done cheer for 10 years. When I moved to school cheer from competitive cheer I had this very rude coach. I’ve had to put up with her for two years now and she’s even my science teacher. I was the center flyer and was in the center for stunts and tumbling and all that. I was extremely skinny and tiny, but she later started to comment about how I was getting “bigger” and that I needed to lose some weight. I got so frustrated with my self that I was accordingly “getting bigger”. I got removed from being a flyer and I was moved to the back, because I was “embarrassing to look at”. I would always let her words get to me, so one day I just stopped eating. After this it became a habit. I would not eat anything all day and I would only drink a little water. I started to become very lightheaded daily and I would almost pass out from not eating and hardly drinking. I didn’t tell my mom that this was all happening till she figured out I wasn’t eating. When she figured out, she immediately went up to the school about all of this. I’ve lost 45 pounds from this woman and her nasty comments. I’ve started to gain an eating disorder as well. Don’t let mean comments get to you like I did. It’s not worth almost losing your life for someone’s nasty, mean words. It’s also very safe to say that I will NOT be doing this cheer team under her supervision next year.

I’m not a gymnast but i am a figure skater and i know painfully well what she was feeling. When i was in juniors i was this tiny little thing, it wasnt that i wasn't eating enough, it was lack of muscle, it was i had a child's body. A year before i turned senior, i hit puberty, got fat, and everything changed. At first i didn't lose any jumps but i could physically FEEL the difficulty slowly coming back. If you dont skate it's hard to describe but when you first learn a jump, it feels like gravity is increasing, half of its fear, the other half is you don't know what the fuck you're doing because it's new. but the more familiar you get the lighter and lighter it becomes, losing a skill is the opposite. The thing is people will tell you, oh its all in your head, you're still jumping fine, but ofc people don't understand, bc they couldnt feel what it was like to be jumping in that body. Of course my coaches would tell me otherwise. I was sloppy, I was lazy, I was fat. Their comments would hurt the most because they were always so well disguised. "We should keep you locked in the rink during Christmas so your appetite doesn't get away from you." My nickname was "little piggy", I wasn't even 55kg. But oh when I was skinny, god I lived for the comments. How good I looked, how well I skated. I went from "little piggy to golden girl" at the rink. So it shouldn't have been a surprise when, like lots of other girls in my sport, i stopped eating to undo what puberty was doing to me. My diet was already being watched by my coaches but i started secretly cutting out meals. And while i was getting skinnier, i was also losing muscle which is half of the reason we get off the ground in the first place. and without muscle my technique took a hit. i started basically doing an entire rotation before i even took off the ice, which let me keep my triples but my back was being affected. And while all of this was going on, my restricted eating had crossed into the red and i was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and bulima. I was 14. My coach once caught me throwing up in the bathrooms before training to get rid of whatever I had eaten for breakfast. She told me "if you're going to do that could you at least do it at home." That broke me. That actually shattered me because I was hurting so badly- I needed someone to tell me to stop because I couldn't do it myself. I started recovering when i was 16 almost 17, when I weighed 46kg and was 165cm. During the peak of my eating disorder I had fractured my foot, and had both surgery on my knee and my back. My ankle and knee were injured making mistakes that could've been avoided if I wasn't so lousy. I couldn't jump, couldn't spin, and i couldn't skate. During recovery from surgery I got put in therapy and that's when little by little, I started to get better.

Isn't it just messed up that grown ass adults are telling kids this & body shaming them. Katelyn did things on the floor that no other did. She's amazing❤

That happiness shines through, and the trust and confidence she gained with a carring and understanding coaching staff resulted in a confident gymnast and 10s from the judges. Not to mention a whole new generation of young gymnasts with a new, positive inspiration.
