Kate is not only an extraordinary singer, with a vocal range of up to 4 octaves, but she's an all round artistic genius - songwriter, dancer, arranger, producer, pianist. This video is certainly not the best demonstration of her talent., and I don't understand why people insist on recommending Wuthering Heights as a song to introduce her. Far better to try This Woman's Work from 1988, or her Duet with Peter Gabriel, Don't Give Up. She rarely toured or did live performances, preferring to concentrate on composition and production than the circus of the touring circuit, but there are many music videos over which she had full artistic control. Suggestions are Army Dreamers, Babooshka, Wow, Breathing, Cloudbusting, Running Up That Hill, Sensual World, Rubberband Girl, just to name a few. But I do recommend you HAVE to watch This Woman's Work - it will change your opinion and blow you away. Also, take a look at this reaction /analysis by Beth Roars of a different live performance of the same song - kzread.info/dash/bejne/oX1svJN8gbjTdbQ.html

Yeah, I've never felt like this song is a good representation of her other work, even when considering how diverse her sound is. I would usually suggest Running Up That Hill or This Woman's Work as better introductions to her sound, especially for those who aren't in to super experimental stuff.

Kate is so good and is one of the pioneers of female pop music. She literally invented the headset mic with a wire hanger so that she could dance without holding the mic. The thing about her, though, is her album Hounds of Love of The Sensual World are where people should typically start so they don’t get turned off by her early voice from the early albums lol.

I don't know if you read these (or care) but this was her 1st single on her 1st album when she was 19. We all improve after 19. It went to #1 in England but the US didn't catch up to KB until 1985 when she released the landmark album "Hounds of Love", rightfully regarded as one of the greatest modern rock albums ever made.

The one and only song you need to check out is "This Woman's Work" by Kate to prove beyond doubt that she can sing. I think this was her first (?) live TV appearance and it was on the BBC. Back in the day if you sang live you could not have your own band and it had to be a cover by the BBC orchestra. This is a terrible introduction to Kate as you can hear the nerves in her voice. On the program at the start when she was being interviewed she sang live playing the piano to "Kashka From Baghdad" and this is on KZread (Live 1978). She was much more comfortable and gave a much better performance. Her voice has matured over the years. Definitely worth giving her another go.

This song was an instant hit. I absolutely love it and always have. Anything by Kate is alright by me. She can also dance. She attended the same performance school as David Bowie under the mentor-ship of Lindsay Kemp, famous British dancer, actor, teacher, mime artist, and choreographer.

OOOOooohhhhhh You've opened Pandora's box now...You really need to see all her other stuff. I think she is a bot breathless here in this performance. Kate was always reluctant to perform live, which resulted in only one concert. But she had written over 50 songs by the time she was 15-16 and sang them to Pink Floyd's David Gilmore - who ultimately was so impressed he decided to help her financially to get her started in the industry. You would do well to listen to more of her stuff: "Cloudbusting", "Army Dreamers", "Babushka", "Running Up That Hill"...the list goes on.

Both Kate Bush (British), and Joni Mitchell (Canadian) are two of the greatest singer-songwriters ever. Both began with pure high soprano voices, both of their voices deepened and grew rich as they matured (Joni's got very deep due to chain smoking.) Try Kate's: The Man With the Child in His Eyes (studio recording), Wow (official video - Version 1), Babooshka (official video), Army Dreamers (official video), Running Up That Hill (official video), her duet with Peter Gabriel: Don't Give Up (official video). I've always thought the weird, weird tone of this voice was part of the storytelling, cause she's singing as someone who's long dead, and I think it helps to not hear this first OR only hear it when you know the story of Wuthering Heights. But not all songs come at the right time - things like Moments of Pleasure never clicked with me til I got older, then the understated sentimentality finally made sense. If she'd leaned in harder I would've perhaps gotten it sooner, but it might not have stayed with me as long

She is nervous here but when she centres the voice as she truly can there is little doubt of the control she has over her instrument. She has written and performed so many great songs and many of them are not the typical chart toppers.

It's not just the key; which is in C#, I think but the Octave. Kate had 4 Octaves.

She's something else. A league of her own. She's been around for 40 years so she's not a novice. She's one of those artists that stands out of the ordinary. Check out her other works.

I can totally hear the Kate Miller-Heitke comparison, and I’m pretty sure Kate Bush was a big stylistic influence on her. As a female vocalist, what they are both able to do with their instruments is so difficult and unique. I love Wuthering Heights, it’s just that this vocal timbre isn’t for everybody.

Kate Bush was one of the biggest artists in the UK in the 1970’s 1980’s.That wasn’t one of her better performances as it didn’t show off her creative side.Back in those days there was no auto tune but her creativity and videos were mind blowing. You have to see more of her videos.

Don't give up on Kate Bush. You are absolutely right, her voice has matured quite a bit since that. YOu need to check out This Woman's Work, or Hounds of Love.

You need to listen to the revised version she did on the 1985 best hits album. You'll truly change your mind about this song. That was the first version I heard and I'm so glad I did.

I think this was Kate's first television appearance and she wasn't allowed to use her own band which made it extra terrifying for her. She later said she almost died watching herself here. Not a good example of her ability.

This is probably one of her first live TV performances and she's very very very nervous. There's much better live performances of it online. Strongly recommend Running up that Hill, Hounds of Love, Cloudbusting, Song of Solomon, Sensual world. Or even just checking out the film clip version of WH.

Kate Bush was huge in England and from what I heard back then was she was terrified of flying so she didn't tour the States. I don't know if she finally overcame that fear

Those little face mics, that are common now to stage artists, were invented for Kate by her sound guys so she could dance on stage while singing. You’ve missed the mark on this. This is a bad first song to listen too, though it was one her first big hits back in the late 70’s Her career is still going. In the last few years, or so, she broke UK records for selling out her few concert dates. Her body of work is wild and wonderful, but not for every body’s tastes. Cloud bursting, Hounds of Love, the man with the child in his eyes, running up that hill, army dreamers, her cover of rocketman, breathing, and the list goes on. One of my favs, the wedding list, I've belting along with it forever: No, I'll never give the hunt up And I won't muck it up Somehow this is it, I knew Maybe fate wants you dead, too...
