I often notice Kate putting emphasis upon the letter 'k' in her lyrics. She gives her lyrics so much strength with this tiny detail.

Great reaction. Kate wrote that song to order. She was asked to write the song for the 1988 John Hughes film ‘She’s Having a Baby’ staring Kevin Bacon. She was asked to write the song for scenes that had already been shot of a young Kevin Bacon anxiously waiting in a hospital waiting room while the birth of his child is going wrong, putting the lives of mother and unborn child in danger. There was ultimately a good outcome in the film as there was in the music video, confirmed by the nurse’s good news smile at the end. Kate directed the video, which also starred Tim McInnerny (of Blackadder fame). In addition to appearing as herself in the video she also briefly appeared as a nurse - the first appearance of a nurse walking towards Tim McInnerny with her back to the camera.

First ABBA, now Kate Bush: you're a man of taste :-) Good choice too, this is one of her finest songs. A few more recommendations: - 'Moments of Pleasure'. My favourite Kate Bush song. Another very emotional ballad about friends she lost. - 'Love and Anger'. Featuring David Gilmour! An underrated song IMO. Doesn't get mentioned a lot, but I love it. - 'The Man with the Child in his Eyes'. A classic, which you may already know. If not, it's a must. - 'The Ninth Wave'. A suite of 7 songs that takes up the second half of the 'Hounds Of Love' album. The songs tell one continuous story, so they should be listened to back to back. They also show more of Kate's experimental side. The highlight IMO is 'Hello Earth'.

This song always gets my tear ducts flowing. I am sure this song was written by Kate. People think the lyrics are about a woman dyeing giving birth but I thinks its more about lack of uncertainty and control that the farther goes through while the mother is giving birth, the struggle of waiting. Also have to give credit to Tim McInnerny who's acting was just perfection for the story being told. Fasty

I love your analysis of how the song and her singing in it is structured. Knowing this one for over 30 years, I never noticed the differences between the choruses as you depicted them. This makes me want more of you reacting to known songs, especially from Kate. Yes this one is extraordinary. I want to suggest watching the opening scene of series 2 of The Handmaid's Tale, where a segment of this track featured in. A mindblowingly strong support to quite a disrupting scene... You hinted at what the song might mean to Kate personally. I suspect it is rather more complicated than what I think you are thinking. Let's just say that this song subtly fits into a recurring theme in Kate's music and life: gender transformation. You might not see the connection of that with this song at first sight (or first listen!), but Kate is singing the song from a man's perspective, so, in a sense, "pretending" to be a man. Sort of "psychological cross dressing"! Her song "Running Up That Hill" is also based on gender transformation. The dancer in the original RUTH video clip, Michael Hervieu, actually did subsequently undergo gender reassignment surgery to become "Misha". Trans singer Kim Petras quickly did a cover version of RUTH after it became popular again earlier this year. Lots of hints at this theme everywhere in Kate's music and life. Amusingly, there appears to be a male musician in Sweden who goes by the name of "Bate Kush"!

She was asked to write This Woman's Work by John Hughes the director for a scene in his movie She's Having A Baby where the husband and soon to be father played by Kevin Bacon is waiting in the hospital's waiting room while his wife is experiencing a breached birth that could potentially cause harm and or death to the mother and or child. The song was written from the father's point of view.
