So frustrating to watch. Andrews is clearly more knowledgable, and Smurthwaite just comes off as a loon--and yet somehow they find themselves in a serious debate about an issue. Why is Smurthwaite's opinion on this issue being given airtime when she's so obviously full of hooey? On the other hand, nothing discredits a feminist more effectively than allowing that feminist to open her mouth.
@Xgckl

Andrews has actual credentials on the topic while Smurthwaite's only reason to be there is her popularity and feminist activism. It reminds me of a debate between creationists and their opponents where only one side has actual scientific backup. Or, more on topic, the TV discussion back in the day between Esther Vilar and Alice Schwarzer, where people later couldn't decide whether the person accusing her female German-Argentinian Jewish opponent whose parents fled from Nazi Germany of depicting women in her book like articles in the Stürmer would depict Jews was making equally or even more valid arguments. And I couldn't help but notice how Smurthwaite hardly let Andrews speak and had to repeatedly interrupted. I think people find it so hard to swallow the wage gap not being the product of direct sexism is because we assume women to be acted upon, not actors like they actually are in our economy. That's why we need to focus on the actual societal influences that actually lead women to act this way, which is still fitting within our view of women.

So women should basically be able to come and go from the workplace at their convience and make just about the same or more than their male counterparts?

True. Some women will choose to work more than 8 hours,weekends and struggle to be more productive and competitive,but it's mostly men that do these things. Noone is telling women they can't work on Sundays or 12 hour shifts,they mostly choose not to. How can they demand to be paid the same? It's all about choices and i don't see any problem with it.

Note: "Women EARN less", not paid less. As Andrews states "women aged between 20 & 40, tend to earn on average 1.1% more than their male counterparts". So what is their to actually say about the gender wage gap?
@BreezeeGreenz
2 жыл бұрын
Right. It's an earnings gap, not a pay gap.
The host presents a debate - "Are women paid less"? And begins by saying, "We KNOW women ARE paid less, the facts are incontrovertible. The question I want you to answer is- is it fair to pay them less?" She then goes on to agree and side with Smurthwaite continually throughout, even arguing at one point with Andrews, even though she is supposed to impartial. The difference between Smurthwaite and Andrews is that Andrews presents a reasoned argument on the basis of evidence, context, and analysis, whereas Smurthwaite presents anecdotes, personal opinion, and a general feeling, which the biased host backs up. It is OBVIOUS that Andrews is the more intelligent, more reasonable person in the debate, and this is the kind of woman we need representing women.

Smurthwait has a habit of telling people to let her finish, then interrupting them continuously. It's a sure sign of someone losing an argument.
Jennifer Lawrence was in that movie for 20 minutes and the other male co-stars were in it for 40 minutes. Amy Adams was paid less because shes not a bankable actor. Per unit of work Lawrence was actually better compensated than the male actors with 1 exception - Jeremy Renner, he was in the movie for 22 minutes, but received 9% like the other actors, therefore not only was he better compensated than Lawrence but also Cooper or Bale. Even ignoring this fact we can identify that it was not to do with sexism for this reason - the leaked emails themselves stated that those in the industry saw it as "a joke that Renner is paid more than Lawrence" and measured were taken to better compensate Lawrence. So how can this be cited as a case of sexism? Well easy, we just ignore all the facts I said, along with the fact that we don't even know what these actors were paid below the line. And what is this presenter talking about? American Hustle wasnt the 2nd biggest grossing film lol far from it.

Sexism? What does this mean exactly? Why are men the only ones that can be accused of sexism? Why can't women be accused of this apparent crime? I personally think that women that think that they're the same as men are sexist against other women.
@jayholla7185

+Troy McRoberts How about the "cage gap"? Women receive 60% of the jail sentence men do for the same crime.
Of all the reasons why women earn less, the one concept I never hear from feminists is personal incentive. Do women on average have the same incentive to earn as men. In relationships women comparatively rarely marry below their pay grade, while men often do. Men have a greater incentive to earn, because women still see them as primary breadwinners. In the relationship CV, what a man does is high on the list. The converse is not true. Women have the luxury of choice, it is quite acceptable for them to engage in career stalling activities, it's not just children that allow them to do this, it can be a personal choice for a more socially active life. Whoa be the man who decides to make the same choice in many households, they have a duty that they must fulfil. So when the feminists say that there is sexism to be overcome, they need to be looking beyond child care for some of their answers. Men aren't afforded the same personal choice considerations, how many women will decide to work harder because the man wants a more fulfilling and balanced life for himself.

Hypergamy! Women refuse to marry below their status. Leaving them few males to chose from or "where have all the good men gone?" Women now prosper from having the right to chose parenthood. A right that most men don't have. Men are left with the choice of the women; what suites *her* needs. That's fine but not when women have it both ways. If she choses parenthood she needs to except the burden *without the males involvement*! Not having her cake a eat it too. With rights must come responsibles. Male reproductive rights should not be sex or no sex. When women have 14 choices of birth control! We all know women's dirty little secret of "the accidental" pregnancy to *trap* a man into what maybe Is best for only the women. Without any thought to the well-being of the child or the father. ONLY a woman possibly giving her mother that grandchild before the clock runs out. Woman were given freedom to chose their future with the advent of the "pill"; maybe 50 years later it's time for men??
@notevensurehowwegothere2620

magottyk Absolutely true, every man knows that he will work all of his life. Women have a choice. Men don't look to a partner to achieve their dreams, many women take a short cut and look at a man and his resources as getting her to her dreams quicker. They don't have the same incentive. For most women, it's a numbers game pure and simple. Men generally don't care how much the women makes or if she even has a job, yet women demand a man have a certain amount of assets before she will even talk to him.
@notevensurehowwegothere2620

James Feisley Absolutely correct. Women use men to raise their social status or increase their resources so that they can do more without having to work for it. Add to that they have a built in parachute because if the relationship fails, they just go get another man. Many women talk about love, but when it comes to marriage, it's all about money and what the man has to add to her.

Kate Andrews is being extremely charitable here, trying her hardest to find common ground with her counterpart. She 'admits' that it's a social problem if women stay home despite greater earning potential than their husbands. If a couple choose to bear the financial cost of the higher-earning wife staying home because they see it as better on balance, that is their prerogative.

I worked at CNN when the 'pay inequity' story first came out. The people who did and published the study said right off the back that the pay disparity is not based on income earned, it was based on the level of education. Women are paid the same as men for doing the same job, it's just that women tend to be more educated in that they go to college in higher numbers and women get more degrees. As soon as they said that, CNN and other media outlets absolutely ignored the key premise of the study and said that women get paid less than men for doing the same job. In fact, in many of the jobs women take, like in the service industry, women tend to earn more than their male co-workers. Like so many of the Liberal Social Narratives, it's complete bullshit.

This debate would be like Adam Smith having a debate with the Court Jester on the benefits of capitalism.
You have never been told I don't want a woman in this role, that's impossible!
The average woman doesn't work shifts, doesn't lift, doesn't get wet, doesn't get dirty, doesn't like maths, doesn't solve problems and doesn't EARN that gap, that's the POINT, you're paid less because you DO less. Like Bill Burr stated "you better be standing right next to me listening to that guy play the Cello when the ship goes down!" Trouble is None of them are around when the Cello player begins to play let alone when the water comes in!
I believe we should actually go down this rabbit whole several companies have done an overview of what they pay their associates like google,us woman's soccer team and found out they were getting paid more than their male counterparts so all it'll have end up doing is lead the way for men to start sueing these companies for discrimination
OK then I, a man who earns 22k a year, working for a security company, wants an equal paid job to a female lawyer who's worked her arse off to obtain her degrees in law and criminal psychology. Do I have the brain to do her job, definitely not but there's a pay gap so make sure our salary is the same. 😎

Emotions verses logic!
The newscaster mention that when she started out in her job a man was getting paid more than her simply because he asked. what she did not mention is, how many years did he work there before she was hired and a raise was well deserved to ask for the raise.
Kate is humorously referred to as a Comedian.
Don't claim you want equality when all you're after is preferential treatment
Like pissing in the wind
Women's personality characteristics generally speaking do not align them to becoming obsessed with work and rising up hierarchies. On top of this- there is a deep instinct in women to seek men that make them feel safe- and a deep instinct in men to provide safety for his partner- a component of this is often in securing resources and status. You put both of these things together and everything we observe makes perfect sense.
The life time pay statistic also doesn't take into account that women live longer than men so they would be more likely to have longer in their retirement years than men which would make the "lifetime" pay gap wider.

Kate A. > Kate S. :: Facts > Feelings. 😊
Calm down, both two.
WTF........bring a hack comedian to a debate on a "serious" issue???? Nice job ladies....
What a strange debate line-up.
The problem is that working class women get penalized at work for pregnancy and maternity leave. Society has to decide whether they want the population to have children or not and how they treat those who do.
We need to promote better salary based on merit/performance and not based on gender or sexuality or any other factors apart from and only performance. PS: most of my managers in 20 years of working in London were actually women NOT men. Some were aggressive and nasty some were lovely and welcoming. PpS: you can ask "whatever" to a company but certain questions are NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS (like one of my fellow female Polish workmate often says to people)..
An academic vs a comedian. Yeah, this went as expected. Whose idea was it though, to match them up?
"Is it that women are less intelligent, less capable less hard working? I don't believe it is true .....so what it must be ...sexual discrimination." This doesn't necessarily follow. Even if one is happy to grant you the statistics, you still haven't proven that the main reason for the pay gap is sexual discrimination. It's certainly a possibility but couldn't there also be other reasons for this phenomenon? Such as - choice of occupation - job seniority - working hours - length of leaves taken - job experience - willingness to travel for work - employee benefits- personal ambition/desire I am not saying that any of these are necessarily true. I just want to point out that they are possibilities. If you want to prove that the pay gap must be mainly cause by sexual discrimination, then you have the burden of proof. Not being paid equally doesn't necessarily mean not being paid fairly (some reasons above). I think we should be aiming for the latter not necessarily the former.
The feminist wanted to use certain groups when it supported her point but wanted the other young lady to use generalized stats!
