Katatonia, Sweden's dark rock masters, have completed work on their latest video for the track 'Lethean', lifted from last year's acclaimed 'Dead End Kings' opus. The video was shot by Lasse Hoile, notable for his previous work with the Katatonia as well as Opeth & Porcupine Tree.
In related news, it has also been announced that Katatonia are shortlisted for a Swedish Grammy award in the 'best metal album' category for 'Dead End Kings'.
This year also sees the band embark upon an Australian tour with countrymen Opeth in March, as well as an extensive North American tour in April & May.
Released in August 2012, 'Dead End Kings' is a rich, adventurous and endlessly evocative masterwork that exhibits all the Swedish quintet's established traits while absorbing countless fresh ideas into that monumental sonic brew, this is plainly the strongest and most beguiling album in the Katatonia catalogue to date. It also proves that sadness comes in many shades and that no one is safe from its cold allure.
"Dead End Kings represents progression and taking things to the next level," says Renkse. "The writing was a little more intense and spontaneous for this one. I think that's the biggest difference. But it was made with the same mindset as the last few albums. It just had a little more fire involved."
Dead End Kings was produced by Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse themselves, and mixed by David Castillo (Opeth / Bloodbath). Additionally, Frank Default joins once more on sampling and atmospherics duties, while there is a very special guest appearance by Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland of Dutch legends The Gathering / ex-Octavia Sperati. 5.1 mix by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Paradise Lost, Devin Townsend) Stunning artwork is supplied by long-time visual collaborator Travis Smith.
Tracklisting:
1. The Parting
2. The One You are Looking for is not Here (with Silje Wergeland)
3. Hypnone
4. The Racing Heart
5. Buildings
6. Leech
7. Ambitions
8. Undo You

after a lot of reflection, I think this is probably the best song that kat has ever written and performed. it's so concise, rhythmic, and beautiful. the lyrics are utterly stunning. jonas's voice is at its absolute peak here. the guitar solo is fitting and doesn't break the mood or pacing. just really incredible work. this demonstrates the modern maturity of the band better than perhaps anything aside from deliberation. 10/10 work.

@@Payne823 They certainly have mastered the use of it in this subgenre of metal music. Opeth has tunes that utilize melancholy in a great way but i think Katatonia has reached an higher tier than them in the use of it. Producing melancholic music is something that Swedish songwriters and producers have in common and it is prevalent in every genre, heavy use of melancholy. ABBA did it in a masterful way, even some of their upbeat happy songs give the listener that melanholic feeling. Sometimes very subtle. Only in metal music has any band/musicians come close to reaching their tier in melancholic songwriting/sound production. Katatonia certainly in the lead amongst them.

I sincerely hope that they serve as an inspiration to future bands, and to remind fans of metal that while heavy riffs and blast beats are awesome, they're not everything.

Although I'm sure it could be argued (especially with the accoustic concert, which is exceptional), I'd probably give that spot to Alcest.

This is my first time hearing this band. This is awesome. I like the way his voice matches the beat. As much of a metal head as I am, I'm confused to how I never heard this band. 😄😅😂🤣. Bands pretty good.

They are not on most platforms, I don’t even remember how I found them, but I love Soilwork so I think it was suggested from only that band. They’re stellar 🤘

A top five band for me ever since the last fair deal gone down album. Jonas has a voice that conveys emotions beautifully complemented by the minor key maestro Anders

I am in so much pain. Loving that person beyond words but feeling that your existence and love for him does not hold him back from having suicidal thoughts. I am helpful for nothing, I cannot help anyone. I am just nothing. I came to this world as a blank space and thats what I will ever be.

Without a doubt. One of the best songs that man has ever written. Katatonia should be the most recognized metal band that has ever existed - over metllica - over slayer - over most other than QR, DT, FW, IM, and the scorpions - lol… but Oh my GOD … this is just absolute GENIUS and they know how to visualize it too…. I swoon over the past 5-6 katatonia albums. Before that not so much…
