Paper cutting is mostly to test edge alignment, and in this test, the difference is negligible at most. I'll do some more tests with thicker targets like tatami to see if anything else comes up, but so far these weapons feel very similar in their usage.

@@trollmaster2000 While the processes Japanese smiths used were better than their Western counterparts, the iron Japan could make use of was of an inferior quality, typically found in black sand and other impure sources. This means that while they used better processes for steel production, the quality of their iron pretty much balanced it out. Also, many blacksmiths forged their weapons, not casted them, so bubbles are not an issue to worry about for Euro and Japanese smiths alike. And the dude was talking about biomechanics, like how your arms move, because that’s the same for everyone, so swords are designed to use the same motions because that’s the optimal cutting motion for humans

Sabers and straight swords require fundamentally different techniques for cutting and thrusting because of physics and geometry. In this example both are equal due to the physics and geometry of the target, which is for all intents and purposes 2 dimensional. The type of combat as well as the location also showcase superiority variations between weapons and encourage alternate though similar biomechanics.

@@aidenmiller3832 "better" is an inaccurate term. They used the methods they NEEDED to develop to make their weapons usable and durable, rather than because it was an objectively better way to smith weapons in general. It was born out of need rather than convenience. You could have, theoretically, folded steel and all that jazz to make a european sword, and in fact Japan wasn't the only place where people figured out you could remove impurities in the metal like that... but why do that since it is so labor intensive, time consuming and overall unnecessary when your metal is of a good enough quality already?

With a katana you want to plant your foot before the cut. It took me awhile to get used to cutting with a longsword because the cut is meant to land before your foot which is opposite of how I trained. They're similar but definitely have their differences.

    12 күн бұрын

@graybonesau I imagine it's because of the difference in the weight and shape of the sword. Long sword is straight blade, making its weight almost equal all section. So, moving the longsword while your hip is engaged in motion makes its strike easier to do. Katana, on the other hand, is curved. Meaning in normal stance, most weight act around the handle. So, by planting your foot before cutting, your body has maximum flexibility and motion to allow the katana to fully maximise its cut while you're on the ground

@@zakwanzakwan4935katana has probably point of balance further from handle, but only because it has no pommel and blade is less pointy. But sword first than foot in hema is just because of distance management. You want to extent your arms to hit and make as little step as possible, because hands are faster than moving of whole body and you want to be protected behind your sword when the hit lands.

This reminds of a passage in the Book of 5 Rings: There are only so many ways to cut someone and a child picking up a knife for the 1st time instinctively knows most of them. It then goes on to talk about how while doing the cuts correctly requires training and focus what the focus of his teaching will be instead how to get to the cut and not the act of cutting.

It has better hand protection only from one angle. From the other angle ( flat side) it has no protection at all. If you are too late to twist when your hands are attacked, you lose your hand. With a Katana it depends on the size of the Tsuba. What the Longsword is clearly better at is deflection with its guard. It is a superior defensive tool, since you can use your guard to deflect then immediate thrust. The blade is straight ( ideal for thrusting), usually longer than the typical katana blade and double edged .

Katana is better. The longsword's charge attack is good & all, but leaves you vulnerable in the approach. Meanwhile, the Katana's 50% health restore on-kill attribute, paired with its overheal capacity gives you sustain that you just don't get with the longsword, even with c-tap. I will relent, that if you have a pocket medic, then longsword is better in that scenario, because the reliable healing is then already taken care of.

@@zeekun615 The DPS is the exact same; 65 base, 88 mini, & 195 crit. And the range is the same, too. Longsword's increased charge is a neat thing to close gaps, but your 15% vulnerability puts you in a sort of "spy syndrome," where you get one really cool kill, but then die immediately. Meanwhile, the Katana's 50% health restore on kill AND its capacity to OVERHEAL means you're given a lot of flexibility in your choices: you could keep going on a tear with your unrivaled sustain, or you can sponge damage during your escape. The sheer consistency, reliability, & sustain from the katana is better, especially if you're pairing it with the booties/bootlegger. Although, having a good medic somewhat negates the Katana's upsides., But when's the last time you've seen a competent medic in a pub?

  • @Ninjat126

Ideally you should never base your strategy around "and then I hope a teammate will be competent." For that reason I think katana wins: you're not reliant on anyone else to keep you healthy, you're able to be self-sufficient. That's a big deal if you're roaming around with shield charges or sticky jumps while medics and dispensers are back on the objective.

Ok, so I think there's an important distinction being missed here. You can use HEMA and treat the Katana like a two handed falchion. That is effective, surely, but not specialized to this weapon. Kendo, Kenjitsu, Iaido and Iaijutsu are the martial arts traditions that have developed for over 600 years with a single weapon in mind. Yes, you can use your general purpose swordsmanship to be very competent in use of the katana. I would wager that you may struggle to accomplish certain advanced techniques within, say, Kendo, without taking another look at your basics. HEMA uses an entirely different set of philosophies to accomplish a different set of tasks. Also, speaking of spacing, hema tends to use a more forward stance that makes it easier (at least for a kendoka) to see your effective range at a glance. Kendos tight upright stance hides your arm length and allows for a quicker extension which is valuable for splitting wooden helmets and for deceiving your opponent into getting too close.

I don't know why there would be. The only real alteration is that there's more weight in the back of the katana which means less forward force, so you're able to better "slide" the sharp side down through the cut. But it's still a wedge. The longsword requires slightly more forward energy as you pull the sharp along the cut...but it's still a wedge. You can commit to the end of the cut on the katana just because of the slight curve making it more optimized for that slash instead of poke...but it's still a wedge. And while the longsword is more optimized for thrust instead of cut, it still has a tapering tip. It's a difference of half degree angles and minimal newtons across the distance of the cut at different points in the process.

No, not really. The longsword is designed for more maneuvers than just cutting. But in the slicing performance there isn't much of a difference aslong as you hold the weapon properly. The long sword has evolved around tougher armor so it specializes more in trusting and versatility. But it's length does give it a slower draw with the obvious upside of being the longer sword.

@@SellswordArts I mean that longsword looks awfully larger than that katana which I don't know the standard sizes for these swords. But comparing the two you have I'd have to give the edge (pun intended) to the larger weapon. (I know there are larger variants of the katana but I don't know if there are other katanas that are the same size of that longsword) Also... Long sword stabs way better.

Besides a different sweet spot they do have different performance depending on the target. The European longsword tends to be more challenging in edge allignment and impacts can cause the blade to bend temporarily. The Katana is much stiffer, but also thicker which makes it harder to displace the material.

This is something I've been saying for almost 2 decades. My background is in Koryu Battou Jutsu for even longer, but from reading an early-ish transcripts of Talhoffer you can see the biomechanics are fundamentally identical. Funnie thang is, some neckbeards I met in the early '00s were (predictably) thoroughly triggered and dismissive, claiming Japanese & WMA (what was early HEMA) to be completely different. Who's right now?😅

It has been my experience in over 50 years of study in the art of blades that in the right hands, any blade can be effective. A person's particular style determines the type of blades that work best for them. I, for instance, like a curved blade. It fits my circular style. Was given a tip heavy broadsword. Cut 11 inches off the front, 11/2 off the grip to clean up some broken aluminum. Now it's a perfectly (?) balanced, easy to maneuver left hand short sword! Works well with my wakasashi.

Nope. The long sword has greater reach, is double bladed, and has better piercing potential. The long sword is much better verse armoured opponents. These are big differences. You can do reverse cuts with a longsword, a katana cannot. No one should choose a katana if they have a longsword to choose from.

The difference is very simple, one is single edged, curve, and the center of balance is slightly closer to the hand on a Katana, the western style is double edged, straight, and the center of balance is slightly more forward one is the best in it’s field at slashing and cutting the other is balanced for thrusting and cutting equally

I can't find the video, but someone did a test to demonstrate what makes a katana different. He essentially just dropped the katana and let gravity take the blade into a piece of cardboard on the floor, and it cut perfectly. The longsword couldn't do that. The impression I got is that with a katana, you largely just need to guide it and let it do the cutting, because the balance and aerodynamics of the blade will do the cutting for you. The video made reference to the "spirit" of the katana.

Colt Navies are cool to fanfire, but they require safety and trigger discipline(which takes alot of time) The M1911 on the other hand, was more versatile and good at it's job, but sadly slowly getting replaced by more modern alternatives(Sabres are Glocks... somehow).

So naturally, in my mind, a long sword and a katana would be designed for the average human range of motion, which, when compared side by side, would be about the same, considering the average height and weight of the region either tool originated in. Idk though, just to reiterate. Just a Layman's observation

All those myths about the katana's curve giving it magical edge alignment properties aside; the only difference would be how their curve might make draw cuts easier. They aren't as good as other weapons in that aspect, but I'd assume the curve does help when the sword is stationary against a fleshy or leathery target, which weirdly is never demonstrated by people when showcasing their art.

in my understanding Which sword is better depends on what it is used to cut. If you use it to cut meat The katana will be like giant razor It is sharp and can cut deep and cut through flesh easily. While a long sword is like a giant fruit peeling knife. The slash wasn't very deep, but the damage was huge. But at the same time, if you slash a person wearing armor A katana is like a steel bar. But at the same time, the long sword It's like a hammer.

Katana is so much lighter gives you speed and stealth and faster counters advantage. The longsword was designed for attacking while still mounted atop a horse so it was longer for greater reach in which to pierce your enemies hole remaining on the horse. However once dismounted and on the ground the longsword is no match for the katana. As the longsword is slow and unyielding. Katana wielder just have to deflect the longsword and then stab or slice before the longsword wielder has a chance to counter.
