Katana's eye is better than before. She is back to acting normal, playing, eating and drinking etc. She is on a prescription for the next 7 days for the eye. No further update videos will be posted till she's better. I will post a full recap in a long form video when the time comes.

I'm glad you finally got her prescription meds. I understand the desire to be fully self sufficient but with pets you need to consider their comfort. Dogs show their pain much easier than cats do so it can be really easy to miss. I don't think you don't care about your cats in any way, shape or form, but I do think you let her suffer unnecessarily because of either ignorance or stubbornness. I hope that you can use this as an opportunity to identify gaps in your knowledge and help further your skills.

Spot on about 'activated charcoal' for those who are new to it. Good for cats, dogs and humans. Summary below: Activated charcoal is used primarily in acute poisoning cases in dogs and cats. Activated charcoal will absorb most toxins pets ingest; the charcoal, when given orally, decreases the toxic effects of the poisoning. For humans same thing, and it also helps settle upset stomachs too. Worth keeping it on hand like aspirin 😊

@@Lioness_UTVonly thing to keep in mind about activated charcoal is that it doesn't just absorb the toxins. It'll also deactivate any medication in their system. So like, definitely keep it on board for toxin ingestion but remember if they're on meds they get canceled out too.

I’m so sorry about the vet issue. In my county each vet takes turns accepting all off hour emergency calls. There is also a vet ER that runs like a human ER where most urgent are always first. I personally have a vet who comes to my house and she has taught me a million tricks and inexpensive ways to treat at home. She is a true animal lover and believes that a loving owner is always going to take the best care of their animal and the animal will be much more relaxed and comfortable. Much love Nate. Had a diabetic cat that occasionally went downhill fast. My vet would get him stabilized, then send him home with me with all the fluids and meds needed because I could monitor his blood sugar more closely and feed him a little every 2 hours. They didn't have staff at night. He finally passed from pancreatitis we couldn't treat well enough to save him years later.

I wish all vets loved their patients as much as mine does. I have rats, so typically the kind of animals that people think are replaceable. When my one rat was very old and very sick, I thought it might be time to help her cross the rainbow bridge, but I'd never been through it before so I wasn't sure. She was still eating and drinking and seemed happy, but she was struggling to eat, her balance was off and she was very clumsy drinking from her water bottle. My vet invited me into her office and sat with me for her whole lunch break. She fed my poor sickly rat some of her grapes and a pistachio and she evaluated her thoroughly. She had most of the symptoms of a stroke and her quality of life was very unlikely to improve. I asked my vet "if she were yours, would you help her pass,or would you take her home for a few more days?" My vet teared up and said "Animals like rats don't think of things like the future or the past the way we do. She doesn't have plans for tomorrow, she doesn't have anything left unsaid or unfinished business. If you need a few more days she will probably last a few more days, we can give her some pain medication incase she is in pain, but I also don't think today would be too soon." I decided it was time, so after one final snuggle with me and her sisters, we put her to sleep. My vet cried along with me. She helped me show her body to my remaining rats so they would know that she had passed and she took her time helping me take paw prints. I don't know if she had other appointments, but she never rushed me. She has such a big heart.

I wonder what you'll be doing, who you'll be calling, when you break a bone or have a heart attack lol. Plenty of people who had bad experiences with nurses or doctors. Are you gonna bastardize the entire medical profession for it? Asinine thought process.

Vets are leaving the profession in droves. There’s a national shortage. They’re getting burnt out just like doctors. My vet clinic only has one full time vet and they can’t take any new patients anymore. It’s worse in rural areas. WV is cheap because all the talented people want to move away. Humans have trouble getting decent healthcare in rural WV, of course animals are going to have it even harder. In rural medicine, doctors and X-ray techs can just clock out at 5 or 6pm. Unless you know a guy who knows the vet personally, you’re fucked. It’s a drawback of living alone in the woods. In rural communities, if you don’t make friends in town, you’re SOL in emergencies like this.

You're bringing Katana through what really appears to be toxin ingestion. The only thing different than a vet is subdural fluid so they dont have to constantly attend the cat. I worked at a country vet clinic for many years. One thing to think about is that the highest rate of suicide in a profession is veterinarians. They are absolutely burned out and they usually do care. Covid caused huge issues in people getting animals with no idea how to properly care for them. If they did after hours work for every person that asked them, they’d never go home. It’s NOT an easy job and it’s life consuming. I’m sorry you’ve had such bad experiences with vets. I’ve been fortunate to have some of the best vets out there work on my animals. In our area - the vets do a rotating after hours emergency shift. So if you call in after hours and normally see a vet in this area - you are sent to whatever vet is on call. This still means a vet with do 2 24 hour shifts a week and also their normal 6 days a week veterinary care. I’ve seen vets totally break down because people come in with an animal that should have been seen weeks ago and is now going to cost $3000 to fix and the people are screaming that they can’t afford it and if the vet cared they would do it for free. They just cannot run a business like that. The veterinary industry is in major crisis with not enough young people replacing the vets retiring. The best thing I think you can do is find a vet and form a relationship with them while your animals are healthy. They know your animals normal vitals and how you manage your animals when you aren’t panic stricken. Once you have that relationship - you will find that doors will open for you when something goes wrong and you need help immediately.

Our family has had great experiences with vets. With one exception. We brought our newest cat to the closest vet one day, and before the day was over we got a call, "Your cat is dead, come get it." We found out later, that this guy HATED cats and dogs and only considered large animals worth his time, but he was such an unpleasant person that farmers kept dropping him. - About a year and a half later, he either died or retired out of state, not that we cared to find out either way. A new vet had opened down the street from us, and she would interrupt her own dinner for poisoning or major injuries, essentially stuff that couldn't wait. - Nate's bad vet experience seems to be based on a vet that was surgery-happy. Just like with humans, bloodwork should come first except with obvious major trauma.

A lot of rescues don't rehome FIV positive cats and will just put them down, that's probably why its the first thing the vet checked. No point in doing any medical procedures on a cat that will be put down anyway. (I don't agree with it but its what they do).

Fiv is contagious and often fatal and its considered a risk to rehabilitate a stray with fiv. So most strays are tested before treatment. That way if you do decide to go through with treatment they can quarantine and keep the other cats safe. If you tell a vet that a cat was a stray you can Normally expect a fiv test. Fiv is also really expensive to treat and if you paid to get the cat treated for something else then get told oh it has a terminal illness and needs to be put down or expensive treatment to just prolong its life for a little bit you probably would be upset.

As far as testing, the test has false positives AND false negatives. We had one that tested negative, was kept indoors from that point due to diabetes, and over a year later, he tested positive. Had we not told the emergency vet there was FIV in the outdoor animal population, we never would have known.

I'm someone who actually works in the veterinary field. It is incredibly easy for you to be angry that a vet wouldn't treat your sick pet after hours- but it isn't just your sick pet. It’s everyone's. It’s call after call after call, day after day after day. They have to protect their own limits. Most vets are also drowning in debt- they are not making bank. Vets have one of the highest suicide rates of any profession, and people who expect them to constantly be accessible are a big part of the reason. I schedule appointments for pets in need of euthanasia. I get calls daily from pets in dire straits that are truly suffering- but there is a limit to how many my doctors can help in a day. Sometimes- often- I have to tell the family my doctors are fully committed. Sometimes the family has no other options. I understand when they curse at me, and I cry with them when they sob- but they also dont know I took ten other calls in the last hour, and my doctor already offered to see two extra families on top of their normal schedule. I've also worked in clinic on days when every cage is full and I don't get a chance to eat for ten hours. It’s not about offering more money- I have many families who try to do the same for euthanasia appointments. It’s about the doctor and staff having some kind of work life balance so they don't become another statistic. If I scheduled everyone who called my mobile doctors would never see their homes.

I can even prove some of them lied to me and my family about some of their promises. I dont think they even actually gave me MY dogs ashes.

@@trianglekitty I 2nd this I’ve been a veterinary technician for 6 years, 3 years in GP and 3 years in ER and Critical Care. Most owners have no idea the amount of pets we see on a daily basis especially in the summer months. At least 50 percent of the pets that come into the ER could have been prevented if owners were more educated about their pets. You won’t know what’s wrong with your pet unless you get diagnostics done. After seeing so many neglect cases I can assure you unfortunately we care about random pets we don’t know more than their owners do. I have been on the owner side and the technician side and people that never worked in the field have zero idea of what we go thru.

Being chronically ill, this sounds a hell of a lot like when I have symptoms. I have vitals equipment, I know my baseline, I know how to treat myself. Emergency rooms and urgent care are difficult because my history is so long and my immune system is so bad that often they are more dangerous than I need. And doctors who don't know my situation already are hard to get up to speed well enough for them to not screw up more things than what I am experiencing. Home care and phone calls with my specialist very often get the job done. Sometimes you DO know better than the individual doctors in your vicinity. I would not trust just anyone with my health. If you are doing what a medical professional would be doing and keeping an eye on things effectively, sometimes that really is the best course. Good on you for taking Katana's stress levels into account, too, it's so easy to say "see a vet" when honestly you communicating remotely with them and taking their advice seems to be just as effective. Can cats not get telehealth too??? Point being though you're doing a great job Nate!

I hope you have better luck in the future and find someone that treats you and your animals with the respect y’all deserve. Good vets are hard to come by and those that are good are swamped with cases making the bad apples the ones with availability in a pinch. Hopefully you can find a better one in the future. Be careful with the syringe hydration. If you rehydrate cats too quickly it can affect their heart, that's why slow drip IV hydration is recommended. When my cat was sick and wouldn't drink the vet recommended cat milk or putting gravy in their food. Or you can get recovery cat food that has a days worth on nutrients in 1 tin, for cats that are not eating much. I don't agree with you about not getting her checked over by a vet. A vet can check for things you can't.

Subcutaneous bulbous is water injected under the skin. Be sure to not overly hydrate, because too much water can be harmful, too. I’m a retired lab tech (MLS) and my laboratory ran dog and cat blood tests for our local Vet Clinic. I’m not a Vet , so I’m not telling you what to do, I’m just sharing a little of what I do know. She’s your cat and I know you care very much about her. There was a video you posted, where one of the kittens wasn’t as responsive to your call. One came bounding to you, while the other would not. You mentioned that this was usual behavior . I’m wondering (if it was the kitten that did not come when called) if her illness is a chronic condition, rather than acute. This information might be something you want to talk about to a Vet. Honestly, I can’t remember which kitten didn’t come when called, but if it was the sick one, this might be important to consider. I know you being bombarded with comments, sorry if I’m being too intrusive.

Cats can purr to soothe pain and help with healing. The key points are: Cats purr at frequencies between 25-150 Hz, which correspond to frequencies used in therapeutic healing for bone growth, wound healing, and pain relief. Research suggests the low-frequency vibrations produced by a cat's purr can actually stimulate healing, particularly of bones and tendons. Similar low-frequency vibrations have been used in humans to promote bone growth and muscle strength. Cats may purr when injured or in labor as a way to self-soothe and ease their pain. The purring helps regulate their breathing and has a calming, healing effect. One study found that cats produce a more urgent, high-pitched purr when they want something from their owners, like food, compared to their normal purrs. This suggests purring can be a way for cats to communicate their needs, including when they are in pain. Cats also purr when they happy and content of course but also because of pain

So now we have a comment section full of people hating on vets and are much less likely to take care of their own pets properly and get them treated now. This is a huge problem with social media influencers. One bad experience doesn't mean all vets are bad, and none of you including Nate know more than a TRAINED professional in ANY profession. Of course there are bad ones, there are bad people in every profession. Plenty in this comment section alone. But Nate said it so it must be true and we better jump on the bandwagon! Anyone disagreeing is a hater! Switch that cat out for a human, not one of you would be justifying this level of neglect. Not one.

First things first I think we can all agree that this isn’t a human with human traits and human emotions, it’s a cat. With that out of the way why do you think Vets already had a bad name to begin with? Could it be the guess work involved in your diagnosis, the extreme cost of your tests and treatments or the way they pretend that they know absolute best when it comes to your pets? 98% of vets claim feeding raw will make your pets sick, that no bones should be involved in their diet and that allowing your dog to sniff for 20 mins = a 3 mile walk. Side note, his cat seems to be doing just fine, so maybe he knew what he was doing and his decision to treat at home was the right call.

This guy doesn't know as much as he thinks he does, he sure as shit doesn't know anything about cats, especially since he seemed to think he could "train" a cat not to do what cats do (fighting, spraying, even altered cats fight and spray) or thinking he can "train" cats to stay on whatever land he wants to designate them. He got extremely lucky with his dogs because Minion seems to be a people pleaser dog and Azlan is just a good natured dog.

The "ins and outs" are absolutely the best indicator of cat health. You are doing alright. Making sure that she is eating, drinking weeing and pooping is critical because cats won't tell you that they are sick. My last, now fired vet basically was trying to upsell me ununnecessary services and name brand drugs when all we needed was some glucosamine. He's 10. He has some arthritis in his hips. He will get his yearly check up and stay up to date on his shots. For no other reason than I want to be able to travel and rent with him. You are doing a great job.

My family is from the Finnish countryside. When some of the animals out on the farm got sick, including cats, there wasnt much they could do for them, other than giving them love and trying their best to keep them eating & drinking water. That's just the way it is and always has been, vets are such a new type of facility not available to everyone, whether because of the long distances or unaffordable prices or both (at least out in the country), and obviously i understand that if you love your pet, you will want nothing but the best care possible for them. What i guess im trying to say here is that if you dont take your pets to the vet every time one gets sick, it doesnt neccesarily make you a bad pet owner.

just wanted to mention this my dog had sores for over 5 years as it turned out he had liver and kidney issues changed his diet to a more suitable one and he has been pretty much clear for a year or so. that being said it was late, so he has a serious chronic illness. just wanted to mention this to point out that some things arent just what they seem to be, but a result of a systemic issue. of course if its something not so severe and it passes in days then i wouldnt be worried but, if you see your animal suffering from even a minor issue chronically, getting them FULLY checked will give you the best result so youre not left with a chronically sick animal for years.

He obviously sees this cat as more of a farm hand than a pet. “If she dies, she dies.” I’d bet my life savings if Minion’s eye was twice its normal size one morning he would be in the truck on the way to get tests and antibiotics. Hey I figured the cat would be fine but it was still really upsetting seeing her so unwell like that…that particular short seemed a be much more controversial than usual for the channel because i read most of the comments on shorts 😅. This was a bit close to home to me because I had a kitten who passed away who was in a similar condition to her (albeit she was much smaller and weaker than Katana) and we literally took her to the vet the same night symptoms began and it still wasn’t fast enough. Anyways Nate I always trusted you have all your animals best interests at heart, and watch out for poisonous plants around the babies!

I cringe to hear Nate use negative stereotypes. There is no way every vet, or even most vets, are bad & do not care. Nate is usually the exact opposite - extremely fair and positive. I'm sorry he's had bad experiences in the past and I completely respect his decision to treat Katana himself. But why broadcast negative aspirations on an entire group? Especially when you have the responsibility of reaching millions of people. I love this channel ❤& I'm leaving this comment in an effort to spread positivity. I'd hate to see some young person not take their cherished pet to a vet because they heard on KZread that vets are bad. Finally, thank you to all the vets who went to school and studied hard for years because they love animals and want to help people and their pets. I think there are many, many more good vets although I'm sure there are some bad ones. Thanks for not @'ing me. ☺ Again, I love this channel and I have the utmost respect for Nate and Jen. Peace and love to you guys; and all good karma to Katana. 🐈
