You play this piece seriously like 20x better than any other recording of this solo I've heard anywhere else. This tape made me fall in love with the piece and I'm actually playing it tomorrow for a percussion competition. I've used this video as a reference on how it should be played, but I (and everyone else I've seen) can't get it to anywhere close to the level you played it at lol. Amazing piece and amazing playing.

That was amazing man. Gave me the chills a few times. I havent done a marimba piece in a while. I think this would be a good solo to help me get the feel back.

Can I ask why do you have high wrists at the start? I’d suppose it’s to get a lighter sound for the rolls but as they crescendo it just sounds thin

Why do you have your arms so far back in the beginning? All you have to do is take a step back

  • @NikiGehrer

It's about the tilt of the mallets so stepping back would not work i guess

Niki Gehrer why would you want to tilt the mallets? Even if you stepped back you could still tilt your wrists anyways so why are you so close to the marimba?

It’s to change the volume of the mallet rolls. It’s for dynamic effect

Brandon Pressley sound is determined by Mallet choice, not a person's grip

Nom NomZ You obviously aren't listening hard enough. I used Steven's grip all throughout high school, and now that I'm at a university as a percussion performance major and am studying under the direction of Pius Cheung, I realize now that your grip does determine your tone quality. Cross grips are more natural and feel more like an extention of your arm, and as a result it's easier to produce the sound you're looking for.

  • @napostrophen

that depends on the person. Not everyone agrees with it. I'm a music ed major at the University of North Texas and 99% of student s and faculty, such as Professor Mark Ford, uses stevens, and know one complains about the tone quality they produce with the stevens grip.

Many Marimbists don't use Stevens. Stevens is popular in the US, but many other countries use traditional cross or Burton instead. Also, Pius Chung, Nancy Zeltsman, Gordon Stout...all non Stevens. Moral of the story - every grip is viable. Sound quality comes from Mallet choice and how you play the instrument.
