I watch all of Rika Usami's videos! We can even see in her interviews all the qualities of a great martial arts master! She speaks sweetly, she even leans over to greet people! She shows strength and her power in the martial arts when it is necessary to show it! These are characteristics of the true warrior! Kindness and courage at the right time. These qualities are not acquired early on. There are years and years of disciplined practice, it is a natural consequence! I once saw a great Korean Taekwondo master say that the constant and disciplined practice of martial arts brings us feelings of courage, respect, kindness, humility. It is true! Only the best are like that! Well-known Jiu Jitsu teacher Rickson Gracie also said that the more a person knows how to fight, the more peaceful he becomes! And the Super Masters Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Tony Jaa, Donnie Yen, Bruce Lee say the same thing! So, I love Rika Usami! ❤❤

She´s really good at kata! This kata "Kosokun Dai" seems to be her karate style´s version of the Shotokan Karate kata "Kanku Dai" 🙂!

Other way around, Kanku dai was formed from kokosun dai however this is a more modern version of the kata for performance with some Kanku dai influences like the first jump

Rika's hand combinations are so insanely fast but still seem so powerful, if that makes sense. Put differently, I've seen lots of people you'd call "fast", but it's more "showy", without any real power behind it. She seems so focused and precise, I believe she is the real deal.

Hello, I'm really sorry, this may seem like a really dumb question; I'm a new ass brown belt, I haven't seen my sensei in like a week (the sempai's have been running the sessions lately) and I think I'm supposed to know this kata for one of my belt testings... I have been through this kata before and the way that it was taught, the jump she did where the lands into a deep lunge... should that be facing to the front judge? Also we have been taught this 'jump' as a spin? I'm just thoroughly confused and out of the loop. Also I have heard that this kata has an alternative name too but I have no idea how to spell it... please help! thank you!

3 years late sorry. Unlike Shotokan, Shito-ryu Kata lack consistency between Dojo's and Kai 会. We don't even do a jump, we do a "drop move" and we face the front judge then turn 180. Rika does the jump version so no turn is needed. There is also a mini jump version facing the front judge, then 180 turn. Also look at 1.55min. You don't stand up in the original Shitoryu version. She does Inoue-ha, but there are other dojos that stand up too (looks more like Chatan yara). Also the Gedan barai to the neck chop it should in Moto-dachi - but she shifts her leg to Zenkutsu dachi - which I actually like, it looks and feels better than the original.

Shotokan comes from Shito ryu, so mainly Funakoshi (founder of shotokan) changed Koskoun Dai (or original Kushanku) to Kanku Dai, changed cat stance for kokutsu dachi and some other techniques... :)

In mitsuren or sanin gake jiu kumite no time for that kind of zenkutsu, just kipa dachi Neko ashi dachi or shiko dachi. at some point tsuruashi/tora but for the fraction of second! real fight for life is what Kushanku Chatan Yara was, or Seisan, Chinto or Sanseiryu! While practising shakumei/setsumei no protection for forearms or shin, same when doing Goshindo! it is best preview/support for these katas.

It is nice tournament kata. But, as long as kata is being done for others and for competition, you are trapped in self-consciousness. You need to grow beyond the tournament stage to understand the deeper aspects of kata.
