KASTELLORIZO | GREECE | A Small, Unique Island With A Lot To Offer

Spending a few days in Kastellorizo, Greece's easternmost island. This island is amazing as it has so much to offer for such a small, and remote island. From the amazing landscapes, to the sunshine, great people, and great food. Watch as I explore this remarkable place!

    Lady from Ro is Despina Achiadiotou, who was my great aunt (megali thea). She was my papou's (Andoni) sister. She was honored as a hero by the Greek gov't in the mid 70's because she kept a small part of Greece ( the island of Ro) free from the occupation by flying the Greek flag even though wars and many hardships were going on. My father was born in Kastellorizo, and also my papou. My yiayia is from Rhodos. I am so proud of her. She was dedicated and a fighter for freedom and love of country. I inherited her love of freedom and love of country!

    @@GlobalNiko thank you for your response. My great-grandmother married my great-grandfather (both Greek and from the Dodecanese) after they met on the island because he was working with rocks and quarries and was back and forth from Egypt while working on the Suez canal. After they got married, neither my great-grandmother or my great-grandfather or any of their descendants lived in Kastelorizo. Although, my mother's first cousins have visited the graves of her family members in Kastelorizo. The real hero in your posts is Eleni, the niece of the Kyra of Ro. WOW! That was amazing to read and witness. Thank you for your posts.

    It’s a lovely island but it’s too far out of Greek waters, it’s in Turkish waters, it’s only 2 km from Turkish shores yet it’s Greek. I mean, is that fair? I guess Greece wanted mainland in Anatolia beforehand and Turkey wanted some islands but Kastellorizo is no where near Greece, it’s miles away from Rhodes eastward. Lovely island, just my question is why is it owned by Greece? Curiosity that’s all.

  • @GlobalNiko

    @GlobalNiko

    Жыл бұрын

    Well the simplest way to explain it is the people who live on and who have lived in Kastellorizo are Greek, so naturally they would want to be governed by, protected by, and overall a part of Greece rather than Turkey.

    Greeks are the first nation that lived in this area of the Eastern Mediterranean, including all our islands, a history of at least 3500 years. A lot of what is now Turkey was inhabited by Greeks for 3000 years before we lost it to you. That's enough losses, the islands are ours, including Kastelorizo. Spain has islands off the African coast, what does distance have anything to do with national sovereignty? Turkey needs to learn to live within its borders and stop coveting what belongs to its neighbours.

    @@elenikarakasidou2636 that’s true and I am aware that Ancient Greece was there before and later in the Byzantine Era however once the Seljuk Turks arrived, as they invaded, they cleansed most of Anatolia of Greek descent and through the Ottoman Empire that continued and once Greece was independent, they started nagging on those old lands with a former Greek presence of thousands of years but also the Ottoman Empire was there for centuries meaning most of the people although with Greek descent through the Eastern Aegean and Western Turkey does not mean Greece can just take it like that despite the people preferring Greek rule and yes the Ottomans were cruel to Greeks but in the old days that was normal, if u rebel, u get put down and Britain, France and Russia saw this and came to defend Greece and which led to the finish of the Ottoman era and now Greece had glory, the lands were inhabited with some Greeks once again and that was fine but once Turkey was formed, we had the mainland sure and yes Greek islands in the Aegean as u said were Greek for thousands of years in the past, that is absurd to allow rocks and small islands off the coast of Turkey or even an island just a km away to be under a foreign country despite the fact it’s history, population and which country it prefers. Turkey barely has any waters at all, Turkey’s “waters” is classed by Greece as Greece’s Exclusive Economic Zone and my uncle in Turkey was only allowed to go such a little way before Greek police boats stopped him from travelling further. That’s unacceptable for any island, Kos, Chios, Lesbos, Samos, Kastellorizo, Simi and much more. I do not approve of the Turkish government’s activities myself but every country which has sea access has waters which must at least extend 10 or so km, Greece defied many treaties it signed with Turkey hoping to get away with it, a few rocks and islands between Greek islands and Turkey were supposedly not allowed from either side to take over as a buffer zone, Greece took it a few years ago and NATO, the UN and the EU did nothing but when Turkey invaded Northern Cyprus, they took action. The West backs Greece but not Turkey and most Turks have come to a result that Greece is Europe’s “spoilt boy” I’m afraid due to the fact Turkey has not permitted to join the EU cuz it’s not a Christian country (bruh it’s an economic alliance) and everyone goes to Greece and not Turkey because of propaganda from certain countries. Have a read and get where I’m coming from. Also search up sources u might not read that are also neutral sources. You might learn something else you haven’t before. I have diverted off topic in some areas of here but it all adds up.

    @@historyjea8275 B ecause Turkey was in these lands for centuries, doesn't give it a right to claim them again. It was an occupier and a brutal one too, we won our lands back, even not all of them, by war and international treaties, that's it, and that's right. We too had an empire under Alexander the Great that included Anatolia and many other Asian countries, and so did Rome and Britain and others. Does that give us the right to claim those lands back? What logic is this, every land belongs to its native people. Borders are borders and should be respected. Just because Turkey doesn't have enough sea, does that mean that we should give up our sovereign territory so that you could have more sea? Would Turkey give up any of its territory to us? Would it give up any of its islands, if they were hers, so that we could have more sea? Never. It's Turkey that always wants to expand on the expense of its neighbours noone else. I disagree with other of your points too but let's stop here, we can't have this conversation here, it will never end. It might be a good idea too to check your dna, it might be Greek.
