Karma: A Science of Self-Creation

Karma, we've all heard the word before, but can neuroscience help us appreciate the Buddhist wisdom of causality and self-development?
Karma is one of the most essential topics in Indian and Buddhist philosophy but it is often one of the most misunderstood. The "what goes around comes around" interpretation of karma can be misleading and actually result in a sense of disempowerment or blame-the-victim mentality that misses the entire thrust of the Buddha's teaching. Karma is a science of self-creation, what we think, say, and do in the moment, determines who we will become in the future. Buddhist psychotherapist Dr. Miles Neale introduces this interpretation of karma grounded in Buddhism but nuanced through the contemplative neuroscience of perception.

This is the single best description of karma (in 6mins) I've ever seen. It's incredible. I send this to anyone I know or meet who has a spiritual bent. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Dr Neale ❤🙏

"Karma is not defined by what happens to us, but how we perceive what happens to us." This is a mischaracterisation of the Buddha's teachings on kamma. Kamma is not a 'subjective' perceptual effect (although I can see how you would desire that to be the case, being a psychotherapist) it is an objective reality. The Pali canon explicitly states that our lifespan, the family of our birth, our state of health, our looks, our intelligence, wealth, etc. is all conditioned by kamma, as are the events and accidents of our lives. This doesn't mean that everything is destined or fated, we are creating new kamma every moment and can interact with events as they present themselves to us in the best way we can. However that is a far cry from what you are teaching which is nonsense from a Dhammic perspective. Everybody is allowed their own opinion, but don't pass off your own views as Buddhism, it is disingenuous and a source of corruption for the true dhamma.

Miles doesn't dismiss the traditional definition of kamma. He's just offering a neuropsychological alternative explanation of the subjective aspect.of it. He recognizes that kamma concordently runs on many other dimensions, both objective and subjective etc.
