Thisss, it needs to be added asaaaap and you know that type of hug when she's still fighting it, being angry and all that, not wanting to be hugged, pushing you but little by little she calms down in the embrace and just breaks down in your arms, letting you hug her, clinging to your clothes, sobbing in your neck

Poor girl got betrayed and sentenced to inescapble doom while Astarion was, as far as he knew at the time of his turning, robbed of the sight of the sun, his own visage, and his freedom. After that year he spent in isolation i'm certain he wanted nothing more than to see a sunrise one more time. The sheer tragedy in their lives is...idk man

Romancing Karlach is like the story "Fault in our Stars". Its so sad seeing her ticking down and trying to make sense of everything, and I'm slowly accepting the fates she was given.

Never in my fucking life I thought I'd see "Fault in our Stars" next to "Baldur's Gate 3", and it actually making sense.

this is one of those break downs where you're not supposed to say anything. No sugarcoating and trying to "look into the bright side", you just let her give it all out. No real solutions, only despair. In the end you could only hope that she knows that you're there with her, and will be with her through the end. When you talk to her in the camp she gives her appreciation for you for just hearing her out, being surrounded by good company until the end is not a consolation in itself. To live through your friends and valuing you just as much as you are in life as you are in death has always been the goal.

One of the best moments in the game along with the fight against Raphael. Tears were running down my face watching her break down, what an insane performance from the VA.

Yea the voice acgting in this game is awesome, even though I don't like Karlach as a character. I just find it weird, for a veteran of hell as a soldier she often acts like barely an adult. If Larian was more subtle about it and made it so she was hiding her weaknesses, doubts and fear of losing her life, it would be more impactful to me.

Broke my heart when she finally broke down. And her saying i love you threw me off in the best way. It means so much to hear a friend say i love you. It was so nice to hear how much our friendship means to her.

This scene broke my heart. I wanted to reach into my screen and just hold her while she raged and wept.

In a way I'd love Larian to update her story and allow us in a future content patch to save her. But deep in my hearth I know the story wouldn't be so touching if we could save her. And damn, the voice actress gave a hell of a performance.

This scene froze me in place when it played on my game. We had just killed Gortash and I was expecting some kind of cheering, but no. I just wanted to reach through and give her a hug. I wasn't even romancing her and she said she loved me. Larian tore at my heart strings with this one.

I sorely regret not romancing Karlach in my first run. Moments like this captured my attention far more with her than any other companion. I wanted to just hug her every emotional moment like this.

I wanted to hug her and cry with her. She doesnt deserve to be alone anymore..!

"the loneliness THE FUCKING LONELINESS" That hit so hard when she was yelling at me... I've been there... And it hurts... It burns and it can be unbearable...

That's just it though. Seeing as by the end of the game if you put a stop to the BBEG's plans I'd say that Baldur's Gate if not the entire Sword Coast, if not further... I'd say that Karlach is owed a favor. A wish spell sized favor.

Wyll didn’t become the blade of avernus in my playthrough but I was still able to go with Karlach to Avernus without him. I’d like to imagine that my bard Tav will one day reach a high enough level to learn wish in order to give Karlach a new heart

You should be able to use shadowhearts divine intervention to save karlach. You only get to use it once per play through, name a better use for it! So disappointing you cant, damn you Larian for making have the feels 😂

Hells, My character was a Cleric of Tyr, the God of Justice, pretty sure a new heart is the least she owed from the injustice she endured.

I had to spoil this for myself. I couldn't stand not knowing if she was going to die or not. She is so strong yet so sweet. It isn't fair!

Her mention of the Wish spell raises a valid point. Aren't there, like, several dozen tiers of magic powerful enough to save her? Maybe a wildly powerful wizard would be able to Wish it fixed in exchange for something? Maybe you could Pact with a powerful enough entity to fix her?

In universe, there are like 20 different ways to fix her problem. Most straight forward one is finding a high level cleric (which is dime a dozen in swordcoast) and use ressurraction on her. This will bring her back in her original form since engine is more like an accessory.

The voice acting in this game is so spectacular all around. Made me feel for Karlach so much, this scene really shook me and froze me in place. And then the end of her story post-update… me and Wyll FINALLY convincing Karlach to go to Avernus together? Giving her the most badass ending after I was stuck at the edge of my seat praying she wasn’t just gonna die there on the docks? This game hits so different man, they set the bar so high with this one

I saw this cutscene yesterday. Seeing Astarion after Cazador was already rough but this was the first time I cried during BG3. I wanted só much to give her a hug. I'm not going to look up how to do it, but I really hope that I can save Karlach in my first playthrough. I'd feel so bad if she'd die

We all want to save her. But I think it’s the fact that you can’t that seals the poignancy of the tragedy. Tragedy can’t bite very well without teeth and it’s because of how unsalvageable this miserable situation is that makes it so sad. If we could all get our happy endings there wouldn’t be a need for tears.

I wouldn't be opposed to the concept, but there's so many fucking in-universe ways we COULD save her. Wishes, heart surgery on her corpse before revivifying her, having the steelwatch/ironhands fix her, etc. The game ignores solutions for the sake of drama.

And thats how i decided to go to Avernus.

This scene destroyed me unlike anything else in the entire game. It was heart breaking hearing her cry out, to want to live, knowing there was nothing I could do. And the final "Love you", gods it just broke my heart. I was romancing Shadowheart she also liked my tav just as much, looking at the rappor bar. It made me feel bad that there was nobody for her to love. There should be other romances when you aren't romancing characters. It really does break my heart to know karlach doesn't have one to love. I'll make sure to be her romance on every other playthrough. She deserves to have someone for the time she has left.

I really fucking hope that at one point they will add a way to get that stupid engine replaced with new heart, so she could finally have some proper good ending. It is another level of evil to create such a beloved companion only to give her nothing but bad endings. I mean, thorough the game she conveys the message to never give up a only to get fucked

Yea there's an interesting interaction with the steel watch where they make a comment about her engine. How it's outdated. Maybe something along those lines. Alternatively, making a deal with Raphael, maybe getting a wish spell as she mentioned, like a one time use scroll, or going to Avernus and getting her fixed there somehow. I don't like how her story ends like most.

I really wish that Karlach had some sort of an interaction with the 'speak with the dead' spell when used on Gortash. Bane literally says he's making Gortash suffer in the afterlife. I wonder if that would be of some solace to her?

One of the heaviest scenes in the game, immediately gave me David Tennants exit tantrum in Doctor Who vibes, both very similar scenes (strikingly similar, watch them back to back its kinda crazy) with characters dealing with the fact that there going to die and can't do anything about it, very crushing scenes

They make have taken the organ responsible for pumping blood, but they will never take your heart Karlach.

​@@r_bear Late response but there's a distinct difference between a pact and a sacrifice. Seems this situation is closer to a sacrifice, which does not require consent.

I want to give her a hug and damn the burns. She needs to know someone truly cares and is willing to go as far as it takes to right as much of the wrong as possible.

This is basically her yelling at the developers for us, so all we have to do is send this to them.

Wish there was a Saving Throw option to just hug her when she was like that. Even if you fail you burn take some damage but you can calm her down a bit.

Also a little unclear why there's no interaction with someone you've built a relationship with. No hugs, no holding hands in the difficult moments of your love interest.

This is the kind of content that inspires me to make fanfics, at least in my head.

Poor Karlach needs a hug at this point, and her heart back, bless her.

bruh. I love the game but this makes me almost not want to play it. Karlach is the sweetest, kindest killer cinnamon roll I have ever seen and they're like "yeah, you can go save everybody, be a hero, fight gods and devils, and world ending monstrosities. wield magics that can reshape reality, but you can't save a girl with a faulty machine heart. What. the. fuck. sure you can help her live, in avernus, it's not fucking good enough larian. There are reference points to her heart being compared to an out of date steel watcher engine, so better models exist, there's more than double the amount of infernal iron in the game. you need 2. I found fucking 5. seems like there were so many easy routes to go and ya'll chose sad/bittersweet as the only options. GIMME A GODDAMN WISH SCROLL AND LET ME SAVE HER DAMN YOU. at least if nothing else the modding community is gonna.

Don't even need a wish scroll, though it would be less costly than what I came up with. Grab the infernal iron and Dammon. Use the ritual you learn from Devil's Fee to enter the House of Hope which is in the Hells so her engine will run fine. Make a deal with Raphael to get the upgraded engine design specs for the Steel Watchers - don't even care if he asks for my godsdamned eternal soul in exchange. Raphael has a vested interest in keeping you alive: if you don't give Gale the magic items he needs he makes a deal with the cambion behind your back for a steady supply, so Raphael would do it. Give Dammon the specs and have him do his thing and after he rebuilds her engine the 3 of you return to the Material Plane. All the pieces are right. Fucking. There! Could even do this right after her breakdown. I came up with that in under a minute as a stream of consciousness while thoroughly PISSED and somehow after 6 years of calm deliberation, no one at Larian ever even thought of this?!

@@CastFromHitPoints to be fair I don't think karlach was given 6 years of thought, she was the last companion written (well except halsin and he is VERY obviously a rush-job), basically the first confirmation I saw that she'd be a companion was when she was released alongside all the other origins as MTG cards. but agreed. The ways to save someone with as SIMPLE a problem as karlach's in the Forgotten realms are quite numerous, that we can't explore ANY of those options is bullshit. Larian actually listens to their audience tho so we might get an update, lord knows there are some bugs that need fixing too.

@@deathknightrevan The 6 years bit was hyperbole on my part to juxtapose against how quickly I came up with my solution. While Karlach was datamined as a companion in some pretty early EA builds, I don't remember any of her lines talking about her infernal engine, so it's very probable that was a late-in-development rewrite. But, yes, Larian listens to their fans and they rewrote some things based on player feedback for the D:OS2 Definitive Edition; here's hoping they continue that wonderful practice.

This. In the pen & paper RPG we could solve so many of these companion's problems with existing spells. Or at least you could up until 3rd edition, not sure about later when 4ER reset the Forgotten Realms. Also, this is me and my gripe about the two Astarion endings he is given, which are both equally terrible for Astarion although in different ways. From his point of view, the Ascended Vampire route would be awesome, except it corrupts his soul and also if Tav romanced him it sucks for Tav. And if you persuade him to be all noble and crap and stop the Black Mass, he burns in the sun once the tadpoles are out. Sure, if you romanced him you can at least be there for him, but his existence is now even more fragile than it was at the start of Act 1 and it feels like he has to convince himself that sacrificing his dreams was worth it. If Tav didn't romance him and nobody cared about him, it would seriously suck for him because while Cazador is dead he'd still need a protector against any passing cleric with a stake.

Yeah the devs also said the only cure is to play as her, bind her to whll or sent whll to hell. A bit of oversight but then again if you piece it together karlach was the last minute companion and there is a reason why they have to redo whll’s script in the game. Oh I forgot, you can save her by romancing her and you two can go back to hell

You don't know how much i tried to save her tried not to miss even a quest relating to Karlach but all ended up in nothing but her suffering from her disease and i couldn't do anything just to be at her side...damn larian i never thought i would care this much for a character after Arthur Morgan...

You can save her with a full romance because you and her go back to the hell to fix her heart at the near end of the game

I would have made a deal with the devil himself just to give karlach her heart back! But she would have probably resent me for doing so..

Oh aye. I'm not far enough in the game to know the specifics of what Karlach's bond with the Hells is, but as a general rule, if your soul is not Lawful Evil, it does not belong in Baator and thus will go to a far better place after you die. So my assumption is that despite her circumstances, Karlach will not end back up in the Nine Hells after her death. BUT... If you willingly sign your soul over to a devil, regardless of the reason, then you are bound for Baator and there is nothing anybody can do to save you afterwards. You would be condemning yourself to eternal damnation with no way out just to save Karlach, and if the two of you are romanced, I think she would be very, very, VERY unhappy with your decision. But anyway, this is D&D. Honestly there should be a plethora of ways to save Karlach from her fate. XD A Heal spell should be powerful enough to restore her original heart, or something as crude as operating on her and manually digging it out, while casting a Regenerate spell at the same time. In a worst case scenario, you could also kill her and use a Reincarnate or Resurrection/True Resurrection spell to bring her back, both of which would restore her with her original body.

It’s this, then Astarian after killing Cazador, and then Shadowheart discovering her parents. It’s just GUT-PUNCH GUT-PUNCH GUT-PUNCH… one after the other. Props to Larian but, Christ guys, give my heart a break.

Ahhh... that scene really reopened the wounds that were supposed to stay put in my system.

We all have to take that journey eventually Karly, some sooner some later.

At this moment i would have done anything for her. The most human emotion of not wanting to die

I'm not sure why the writers didn't include... a thread or plot element making her soul tied to the engine or something, so there's no way to resurrect her once it blows, or something... in Faerun, with the wealth and power you have by that point in the campaign... this should be a minor inconvenience

I wasn't ready seeing her like that and because of that, everytime there's an option to tell her that she needs to go back to Avernus, I always say it to her despite her not approving it... Because it's too hard seeing her suffer like that... Goddamnit please give her a well-deserved upgrade in the DLC!

Yeah a close second is when she asked my character what it would look like if she had fifty more years and I responded “I think you’d make a great mum” then she said she’d like that and started crying like this not as much mind but enough to make me feel like shit for a while

All of the characters tug at my heartstrings at one point or another but this. THIS was the scene that made me ugly sob. it really isn’t fair!

It would be nice if we got one wish in the game. Where we got to solve one of our companions problems deep down if we've finished their storyline. Remove Gale's orb. Make Wyll human again. Wish Astarion to be able to walk in the sunlight without dying, or to cure him of vampirism. Rid Shadowheart of Shar's mark upon her so she can be with her family. Have the power to defeat the Netherbrain without becoming an Illithid or to become human again once you do. Give Karlach her heart back. Wish back all the innocents the Dark Urge has killed. Wish to weaken Vlaakith so Lae'zel wouldn't even need Orpheus to overthrow her. But you only get one wish, and only for one thing. Only one truly happy ending for one character. The only condition is the Netherbrain is too powerful for even a wish to get rid of by the time you get it.

Karlach reminds me of Peter Parker. A good character who has an unfortunate life because of the people who wrote their stories.

At least Karlach is allowed to keep what little happiness she gets, instead of getting One-More-Day'd. In my playthrough, she got a kind of happy ending and, who knows? Maybe, one day, she'll be able to come back to Faerun.

Yeah… Gortash was painfully underwhelming as a boss, after all the buildup to it. I mean it makes sense, after you go out of the way to get all the hard work done and get rid of his steel watchers, but even then it’s like you’d hope he would have one last trick up his sleeve.

It is a great compliment to the writing team that I care enough about the character that I wanted to hug this adorable woman during her breakdown. That said, this "no cure" thing for her is BS. Grab the infernal iron and Dammon. Use the ritual you learn from Devil's Fee to enter the House of Hope with is in the Hells so her engine will run fine. Make a deal with Raphael to get the upgraded engine design specs fir the Steel Watchers - don't even care if he asks for my godsdamned eternal soul in exchange. Raphael has a vested interest in keeping you alive: if you don't give Gale the magic items he needs he makes a deal with the cambion behind your back for a steady supply, so Raphael would do it. Give Dammon the specs and have him do his thing and after he rebuilds her engine the 3 of you return to the Material Plane. All the pieces are right. Fucking. There! Could even do this right after her breakdown. I came up with that in under a minute as a stream of consciousness while thoroughly PISSED and somehow after 6 years of calm deliberation, no one at Larian ever even thought of this?!

And besides, Dammon says that the engine gets too hot in this plane. But I doubt that, for example, the plane of literally elemental fucking FIRE isn't hot enough, and it exists

@@digitaldevil696 anything that doesn’t have complete fire immunity just straight up dies in the plane of fire, there isn’t any land or air, it’s just fire so karlach can’t survive there

​@@davidmacko6309 nah, there are a lot of ways to save karlach without ever needing her to go back go hell or become mind flayer. Spoiler.... 1. Using divine intervention? You save selune daughter and save a whole city, shoudnt it worth a "thanks?" 2. There are a spell of "wish" or divine intervention. 3. You only need a few infern iron but you still get a ton of it. 4. The creator of the infernal heart (if i am not mistaken) said it themself that they could upgrade it but then suddenly everyone forget about it and never get mentioned afterward. 5. We literally have a guy who can ressurect anyone with just 100 gold coin lol. They can just kill or let karlach die and that skeleton guy give as a favor. 6. And lot of other hint or way to save karlach without needing to sent her to avernus or become mindflayer.... People in larian discord and forum point a lot of it. I and a lot other people suspect that the reason karlach and act 3 story just outright worse than the act 1 because it is unfinished and rushed.... Because they want to avoid starfield.

Man I really wish you had the option to hug her after this scene. She really deserves it after everything she's been through

Just saw this scene in game and it hurt my heart. Larian’s portrayal of their characters is so fucking good, I feel so enamoured by all of them. I know it won’t, but I really want everything to end well for her :(

The problem is, "Hell" equal how nice decored stays hell, and she wans notmore to be there. More than to be dead.

I get why they gave in and updated the epilogue to have a more hopeful note, but I actually was okay with the original endings. Sometimes good people don’t get happy endings. Sometimes there is no cure for cruelty, and we’re just stuck having to live with the fallout of that. That’s one of the hardest things to come to terms with where trauma is concerned.

My lord I remember seeing this for the first time in my first playthrough.....I cried a bit and died a little on the inside as I had no good answers for her as I didn't want to lie to her nor did I want to say "You're going to die, deal with it." As someone who struggles with several health issues from being born premature (and some bad rolls of the dice on genetics) I have to face knowing I'm not likely to make it past 40 - and I'm 36. I've cried and raged like Karlach, except I've had no one to hear it. Not really. I'm still going to fight until the bitter end. It would be the best plot twist ever to make it to 80, but I'm a realist, so I'm hoping I can make good with what I have.

I normally don't beg to get my wallet raided, but by God we NEED a DLC where we just hop on Avernus to wreck Zariel's shit and fix Karlach. Could upgrade the max levels too, would make sense since we'd be fighting way stronger monsters

This is just so raw and real. It’s even more depressing if you don’t romance her and take her to see Gortash, she talks about becoming a pile of ash.

This scene killed me. I could hear and feel my heart break into tiny pieces. More than anyone else Karlach deserves a real happy ending. I hope Larian will give us that one day. Until then I'll go to hell with her for as long as it takes. Because letting her die is not an option.

I didnt get this scene with Karlach. I dont mind looking up scenes because I play very much based on the toon I roll. But this was heartbreaking. Amazing delivery by the voice actor. But absolutely devestating

I spent every single hour of this game from around the 10 hour mark, the second I met her enamored with her.. like full 180 from wanting to be a dick to almost everyone I came across, planning to kill the goblins and the druids, and became the absolute posterchild of compassion and just goodness _FOR HER_ . Worshipped the ground she walked on. Like FFS, she's having an existential crisis moment so long coming.. give an option to tell her after she freaks out on you about basically how she's going to die soon and you'll be living your life just fine afterwards, to tell her how much she means to you, or hug her, or that you would spend your life finding a way to either cure her or bring her back.. Something. Why do I have to just stand here like some dopey, Kevin James-ass hands in pockets meme while best girl is opening up and crying?

From Raphael's point of view Karlach is still under contract with Zariel. Tampering with her heat might step on areas of her current contract, and devils are very particular about rules and contracts in DnD. For Karlach, you probably want an Archfey, a Wish spell or high level divine magic.

Hope we get a DLC where we travel thru the 9 layers of hell to rescue Karlach, basically Dante's Inferno.

Scenes like this make me desperately hope for an ending in some future definitive edition where poor Karlach isn't forced to go back to the land she despises or die painfully.

I really wanted to go with the whole party with her...Just imagine it, it would be awesome. Maybe Lae'zel would refuse to join but everyone else...even astarion should be able to life freely in the darkness of hells. It be so perfect for a 2 part in which they search for a solution to karlachs engine in the hells. Man, instead all we got is depression and a split up party. xD

Or You could consider ending her life and extracting machine heart. Then by employing the Resurrection spell, which requires a lower spell level (7th) and is more likely to known by someone, you would be able to restore any missing body parts and bring her back to life. At least in ttRPG terms - not in game :V

Going by dnd rules, if they've included True Resurrection as a spell, that could also do the trick. Its the only kind of resurrection magic that can return someone whole (short of a wish spell) restore missing body parts (or give them a new body entirely), cure them of any disease or affliction (be it mundane or magical), removes any curse. Its on the same level of a wish spell, the highest tier of magic available, but in the world probably easier to find someone capable of doing that than a wish spell. Would be crazy if they put a single scroll of either in the game for someone to find.

That's the best part, you can't. Your options are a mind flayer transformation, an avernus kamakazie run or staying with her while the engine breaks down. Adds an excellent dose of tragedy that was sorely missing
